  • The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between chronic diseases, age, and education in Korea. Logistic regression techniques were used to analyze data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA), which is a nationally representative sample of Koreans aged 45 years and older. The findings show that probability of having chronic diseases increased with age up to about 74; however, it was reduced for respondents aged 74 years or older. Associations between age and chronic diseases were also differential by education. Less educated Koreans tended to have chronic diseases earlier in their lifetime; however, they were likely to have chronic diseases later in life less than more educated counterparts. The findings suggest that individuals with fewer years of education are at an increased risk of developing chronic diseases earlier in their lifetimes, thereby, leading to a higher rate of mortality at younger ages.

  • The goal of image calibration is to find a relation between image and world coordinates. Conventional image calibration uses physical camera model that is able to reflect camera's optical properties between image and world coordinates. In this paper, we try to calibrate images distortion using performance criterion-based polynomial model which assumes that the relation between image and world coordinates can be identified by polynomial equation and its order and parameters are able to be estimated with image and object coordinate values and performance criterion. In order to overcome existing limitations of the conventional image calibration model, namely, over-fitting feature, the performance criterion-based polynomial model is proposed. The efficiency of proposed method can be verified with 2D images that were taken by laser scan camera.

  • Retention behavior of lanthanide-$\alpha$HiBA complexes was studied on the cation exchanger (LC-18 coated with $C_{20}H_{41}SO_4^-$). An equation predicting retention of lanthanides in isocratic or gradient elution with sodium ion and $\alpha$-HiBA concentration was derived from ion exchange equilibria of metal-ligand complex system, respectively. The relations between log k' and log [Na$^+$] /log [$\alpha$-HiBA) showed non-linearity in isocratic elution. In gradient elution a good linearity between log k' vs log R was obtained. The values of slopes (log k / log R) gave good agreements between calculation and experiment. Individual capacity factors ($k'_{Ln}^{3+}, k'_{LnL}^{2+}, k'{LnL2+}) and stability constant (${\beta}_1$, ${\beta}_2$, ${\beta}_3$) of lanthanide-$\alpha$HiBA complexes were calculated by the non-linear least square fittings using the retention equation. The correlation coefficients of lanthanides were shown better than 0.9996 between experiment and calculation.

  • Recently, for UHPC (Ulta High Performance Concrete) which is researched actively, as the tensile strength is absolutely influenced on the content of steel fiber, in this paper, experiments of compressive strength, elasticity modulus and tensile strength were performed according to compressive strength and content of steel fiber as variables. By the test results, compressive strength, elasticity modulus and tensile strength are proportioned and have a good correlation and according to content of steel fiber, compressive and tensile strength are also proportioned and have a good correlation. In case of elasticity modulus, the difference between test and present design code is not large, so it is possible to adapt to present design code. On the other hand, in case of tensile strength, as there is no specification of present design code, new prediction equation is proposed by using nonlinear regression analysis and the proposed equation have a good correlation to test results.

  • This paper describes a proposal for average crack width and immediate deflection calculation in structural concrete members. The model is mathematically derived from actual bond stressslip relationships and tension stiffening effect between reinforcement and the surrounding concrete, and the actual strains of steel and concrete are integrated respectively along the embedded length between the adjacent cracks so as to obtain the difference in the axial elongation. With these, a model for average crack width and immediate deflection in reinforced concrete flexural members are proposed utilizing difference in the axial elongation and average steel strain and moment-curvature relationship with taking account of bond characteristics. The model is applied to the test specimens available in literatures, and the crack width and deflections predicted by the proposal equation in this study are closed to the experimentally measured data compared the current code provisions.

  • The ultimate behavior of high-tension bolted joints with various plate thickness and bolt size is investigated using nonlinear F.E. analysis and experimental study. The relation with sliding load, bolt deformation, and failure modes are presented based on plate thickness and bolt size. Three kinds of the bolt diameter(M20, M22, M24) and five types of the steel plates (l2mm, 16mm, 20mm, 30mm, 40mm) are considered for the ultimate behavior of the bolted joints. The numerical model, constructed by commercial F.E. program, ABAQUS, of ultimate behavior of bolted joints is introduced and verified by experimental results. The force-displacement and force-axial strain relations are measured and compared with the results by 3D finite element analysis.

  • The importance of vegetation in studies of global climate and biogeochemical cycles is well recognized. Especially. the FPAR (fraction of photosynthetically active radiation) is one of the important parameters in ecosystem productivity and carbon budget models. Therefore, accurate estimates of vegetation parameters are increasingly important in environmental impact assessment studies. In this study, optical FPAR using the Terra MODIS (MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer), SPOT VEGETATION and ECOCLIMAP data reproduced on the Korean peninsula. We applied the empirical method which is usually estimated as a linear or nonlinear function of vegetation indices. As results, we estimated the accurate expression which is 0.9039 of $R^2$ in cropland and 0.7901 of $R^2$ in forest. Finally, this study could be demonstrated to calibrate that produced FPAR while the overall pattern and random noise through the comparative analysis of FPAR on the reference data. Optimal use of input parameter on the Korean peninsula should be helping the accuracy of output as well as the improved quality of research.

  • A study for the structural strength evaluation on the slender doubler plate has been performed through the systematic evaluation process. In order to estimate the proper static strength of doubler plate subjected to the longitudinal in-plane compression, elasto-plastic large deflection analysis is introduced including the contact effect between main plate and doubler. The characteristics of stiffness and strength variation are discussed based on their results. Also, in order to compare the doubler structure with the original strength of main plate without doubler, a simple formula for the evaluation of the equivalent flat plate thickness is derived based on the additional series analysis of flat plate structure. Using this derived equation, the thickness change of a equivalent flat plate is analyzed according to the variation of various design parameters of doubler plate and some design guides are suggested in order to maintain the original strength of main plate without doubler reinforcement. Finally, correlation between derived equivalent flat plate formula and the developed buckling strength formulas by author et al. is discovered and these relations are formulated for the future development of simple strength evaluation formula of doubler plate structure.

  • In order to obtain consistent change detection result for multi-temporal satellite images, preprocessing must be performed. In particular, the preprocessing related to the spectral values can be performed by the radiometric normalization, and relative radiometric normalization is generally utilized. However, most relative radiometric normalization methods assume a linear relationship between the two images, and nonlinear spectral characteristics such as phenological differences are not considered. Therefore, this study proposes a relative radiometric normalization which assumes nonlinear relationships that can perform compositive normalization of radiometric and phenological characteristics. The proposed method selects the subject and reference images, and then extracts the radiometric control set samples through the no-change method. In addition, spectral indexes as well as pixel values are extracted in order to consider sufficient information, and modeling of nonlinear relationships is performed through multilayer perceptron. Finally, the proposed method is compared with the conventional relative radiometric normalization methods, which shows that the proposed method is visually and quantitatively superior.

  • The purpose of this case study is to investigate an empirical analysis on how public opinion spreads, when is the effect to occur, and how much effective. Data from the 19th presidential election period, specifically supporting rates for a candidate, Moon Jae-in were used. Results indicated that a supporting rate of increase were not linear and the points where the rate of increase is enhancing was 27-8%. It was 1.4 times higher than the previous period. Results providing this research is not appropriate for generalizability due to a characteristic of a case study, but this study has a value in trying to statistically analyze the accurate figures for how much 'majority opinion' is.
