A Convergence Study of Association between Periodontitis and Obesity by The Number of Pregnancy from Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey (국민건강영양조사를 통한 임신횟수에 따른 비만과 치주염의 연관성에 관한 융합연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between obesity and periodontitis by the number of pregnancy using the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(2010-2015). Periodontitis measures the community periodontal index, and body mass index was used for the obesity. Socioeconomic variables and health-related behaviors were investigated. Periodontitis and obesity were higher in women with a high pregnancy frequency after controlling for confounding variables. In conclusion, periodontitis is closely related to obesity, and the association is somewhat higher as the number of pregnancies increases. Comprehensive management of obesity and periodontitis is effective in developing health promotion program for women in future, and this data will be used as basic data for development of women's health promotion program.

  • The aim of this study was to confirm the association between obesity and periodontitis in adults and identify the convergence relationship between periodontal disease and health-related behavior at each stage of obesity among 10,058 adults aged 30-79 years from the 7th National Health and Nutrition Survey data. We performed chi-square tests and multivariate logistic regression analyses, adjusting for demographic characteristics and health status. We found that the higher the obesity stage, the higher the risk of periodontitis. Smoking, not using oral care products, and not attending dental check-ups were associated with periodontitis. In addition, we found a difference in influence factors according to the stage of obesity. Increase in obesity stage is a negative influence on the prevalence of periodontitis. Hence, an oral health program should be applied to the obesity management process.

The Development and Evaluation of a Motivation-Strengthening Obesity Management Program for Obese Subjects with Visual Impairment (시각장애 비만대상자를 위한 동기강화 비만관리프로그램의 개발 및 효과평가)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and apply a motivation-strengthening obesity management program for obese subjects with visual impairment and evaluate its effects. Methods: The program development and evaluation periods were from March to August 2018. The study design was an experimental study of non-equality, control repeat design. 25 subjects in the experimental group participated in the 12-week obesity management program and the 26 people in the control group did not. Results: The motivation-strengthening obesity management program included stretching exercises for 30 minutes in the morning five times a week. In addition, counseling, education, and group discussions were continued once a week for motivational strengthening. Special custom exercises for blind patients were also completed once a week simultaneously. Both of these activities were continued for 50 minutes a week for a total of 12 weeks. Measurements were recorded periodically to identify the sustained effects of the program. The obese subjects with visual impairment improved their knowledge of obesity, perceived disability, self-efficacy of exercise, and quality of life related to obesity through the motivational obesity management program. Waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and fasting blood sugar were also improved in obese subjects. Conclusion: The study findings indicate that this program could be an active intervention for the control of weight gain in participants with visual impairment. Therefore, the motivation-strengthening program based on the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation& Evaluation) model could be an effective strategy for better health outcomes of obese subjects with visual impairment.

Effects of a Nutrition Education and Exercise Program of Overweight or Obese Female Adults on Nutritional and Health Status (영양교육과 운동프로그램이 과체중이상의 성인여성의 영양상태와 건강수준에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was to designed to investigate the effects of nutrition education and exercise program for overweight or obese female adults, and also emphasize the necessity of a proper nutrition education. The anthropometric characteristics, nutritional intake, eating habit, and hematological index, physical examination were measured before and after program. Considering the time schedule of the subjects, the exercise program was divided into 3 sessions (morning, afternoon, and evening) and the subjects performed swimming and weight training for 4 weeks. The subjects were overweight or obese women, with an average age and height of each 46.1 and 156.3 cm. The weight and BMI were decreased significantly after nutrition education and exercise program. The back region of front arm (p<0.001), infrascapular region (p<0.001), body fat (p<0.001) were significantly decreased, and grasping power (p<0.01), back muscle power (p<0.001) were significantly increased after nutritional and exercise program. Total triglyceride level and fasting blood glucose (p<0.001) were decreased significantly after program. The intakes of vitamin D and vitamin $B_1$ were significantly changed after nutrition and exercise program. As for eating behavior and nutritional knowledge evaluation after program, the average score increased significantly (p<0.001). The results of this study show that this nutrition and exercise program can be an effective approach to improve their hematological index and nutritional and health status.

A Study on the Levels of Leptin, Insulin and Serum Lipids of Primary School Boys Depending on %Fat (초등학교 남학생의 체지방률에 따른 렙틴, 인슐린 및 혈청지질에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the researcher classified primary school boys with obesity into light(% fat : 20∼24.9%), moderate(25∼29.9%) and heavy(30% or more) obese group and then analyzed and evaluated their own levels of insulin, leptin and lipids in blood. The level of insulin was significantly high in primary school students with heavy obese rather than in the other two groups. While that of leptin, significantly high in those children with moderate and heavy obese rather than in the other group of light obese. The level of T-C was significantly high in primary school students with light obese rather than in those students with heavy obese. HDL-C tended to increase as %fat went up, but there was no significant difference. The level of TG was significantly high in the group of heavy obese compared to the other groups. LDL-C tended to increase gradually as %fat became high. Thus, depending on %fat, primary school students with obesity were significantly different with each other in insulin, leptin T-C and TG levels. This suggests the urgent necessity of developing systematic and separate programs to treat such obese children.

The Relationship between Negative Emotion and Obesity of the Elderly (노인의 부정적 정서와 비만과의 관계)

  • This study was conducted to identify the relationship between negative emotion and obesity and provide adequate information to enable effective nursing intervention in elderly. Participants were 216 elderly who had been attending two geriatric welfare facilities in Chungbuk. The data were collected between 14 and 30 August, 2017 with a structured questionnaire and body measurement. The questionnaires were CES-D, RULS, BPS and collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ${\chi}^2-test$, Fisher' exact tests, Pearson's correlation, and logistic regression with SPSS/WIN 22.0. The mean BMI of participants was $23.59{\pm}3.48$ and the prevalence of obesity was 31.9%. Significant differences were observed in age (${\chi}^2=8.16$, p=.003), gender (${\chi}^2=9.27$, p=.002), smoking (${\chi}^2=7.78$, p=.004), depression (t=2.54, p=.012) and social isolation (t=2.98, p=.003) between the normal and obesity groups. Depression (OR,1.04; 95% CI, 1.00-1.09) and social isolation (OR, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.02-1.11) was associated with an increased risk obesity. Therefore, it was necessary to measure and quantify the depression and social isolation for weight management among the elderly. Moreover, it is necessary to develop health promotion programs and nursing intervention, including the need for physical, mental, and social relationships.

Effects of a Primary Healthcare Post Obesity Management Program for Middle-Aged Obese Women Living in Rural Areas (농촌 거주 중년 비만여성을 위한 비만관리 프로그램의 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze changes in body weight (kg) and body mass index (BMI) in middle-aged women following a 12 week exercise program. Methods: The obesity management program for primary health care posts, which consists of exercise therapy and dietary counseling, was provided for obese women aged 40 to 64 (N=15). General characteristics of the women and differences in body weight and BMI before and after the program were analyzed using SPSS 22.0. Results: The major findings of this study are as follows; Average body weight before the program was 65.7 kg, and it was significantly reduced to 63.9 kg after the program (z = -3.41, p = .001). The average level of BMI decreased considerably from 27.9 kg/m2 to 27.2 kg/m2 (z = -3.41, p = .001). Conclusion: The findings from this study show a significant decrease in body weight and BMI after the program. Continuous study is needed to develop a variety of obesity management programs for middle-aged obese women. When developing programs regional characteristics need to be considered and there is a need to confirm the effectiveness of the programs.

Effects of Health Practices and Oral Health Behaviors on Obesity in University Students (일부 대학생의 건강 실천행위 및 구강건강행위가 비만에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was to identify the obesity(BMI), health practices and oral health behaviors of university students and provide basic data for the development of a health promotion program for healthy campus communities. Total 177 students filled out a self-administered questionnaire. Data were analyzed for descriptive statistics, chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression to evaluate the effects of health practice and oral behaviors on obesity. This study shows that the prevalence of obesity was 27.7%. Univarate analysis demonstrated that gender, age, the preference of salt, sleep in every day, self-perceived general health, the visiting the dentist during the past year were significantly different according to BMI. In multivariable regression, preference of salt, sleep in every day, the visiting the dentist during the past year were independent predictors of BMI, after adjustment of gender and age. The findings of this study emphasize the importance of obesity prevention program in overall, eating habit, mental health and oral health behavior in students.
