Motion Linearity-based Frame Rate Up Conversion Method (선형 움직임 기반 프레임률 향상 기법)

  • A frame rate up-conversion scheme is needed when moving pictures with a low frame rate is played on appliances with a high frame rate. Frame rate up-conversion methods interpolate the frame with two consecutive frames of the original source. This can be divided into the frame repetition method and motion estimation-based the frame interpolation one. Frame repetition has very low complexity, but it can yield jerky artifacts. The interpolation method based on a motion estimation and compensation can be divided into pixel or block interpolation methods. In the case of pixel interpolation, the interpolated frame was classified into four areas, which were interpolated using different methods. The block interpolation method has relatively low complexity, but it can yield blocking artifacts. The proposed method is the frame rate up-conversion method based on a block motion estimation and compensation using the linearity of motion. This method uses two previous frames and one next frame for motion estimation and compensation. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm effectively enhances the objective quality, particularly in a high resolution image. In addition, the proposed method has similar or higher subjective quality than other conventional approaches.

The Dual-Resolution Image Database System for the Fast Naked-eye Retrieval (빠른 육안 검색을 위한 이중 해상도 영상 데이터베이스 시스템)

  • In this paper, we implemented a dual-resolution image database system for the fast naked-eye retrieval using interpolation. This system can solve two conventional problems : a blocking noise at zoom-out image in single high resolution method and a big storage to store in simple dual-resolution image database system. The proposed method makes a subsampled image by subsampling a original image, and then a interpolated image of it using interpolation. After that, a hybrid dual-resolution image database is composed based on the differential image between the interpolated image and the original image. Experimental results of simulating through 60 sample images shows that the proposed method is 0.011 second faster than simple high-resolution method in the retrieval time - one is 0.003 second, the other is 0.014 second, respectively. Also, that improves 14.7% more than simple dual-resolution method in the stored size - one is 19,821 byte, the other is 16,910 byte, respectively.

An Effective Cell Scheduling Algorithm for Input Queueing ATM Switch (입력단 큐잉 방식의 ATM 스위치를 위한 효율적 셀 중재 방식에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we propose a cell scheduling algorithm for input queueing ATM switch. The input queueing architecture is attractive for building an ultra-high speed ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) switch. We proposea WMUCS (Weighted Matrix Unit Cell Scheduler) based on the MUCS which resolves HOL blocking and outputport contention. The MUCS algorithm selects an optimal set of entries as winning cells from traffic matrix (weightmatrix). Our WMUCS differs from the MUCS in generating weight matrices. This change solves the starvationproblem and it reduces the cell loss variance. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by thesimulation program written in C++. The simulation results show that the maximum throughput, the average celldelay, and the cell loss rate are significantly improved. We can see that the performance of WMUCS is excellentand the cost-effective implementation of the ATM switch using proposed cell scheduling algorithm.

Digital Video Quality Assessment using the Statistics of Boundary Strength of H.264/AVC (H.264/AVC의 경계 세기 통계를 이용한 디지털 비디오에서의 객관적 화질 측정)

  • In this paper, we propose a novel objective video quality assessment method from encoded H.264/AVC.. Conventional algorithms have been proposed to assess video/image quality with image frames reconstructed in a decoder side. On the other hand, the proposed assessment is conducted with the syntax elements which are embedded in a bitstream. The proposed BS-based algorithm makes use of the statistics of boundary strength(BS) which are employed in the H.264/AVC. The proposed algorithm has lower computational complexity than conventional methods, EPSNR and Blockiness, resulting that it can accomplish assessment of the video quality in real time. Furthermore, the accuracy of the proposed video quality assessment is about 32% and 65% better than several conventional algorithms.
