  • The experiment was carried out to define the effect of the boron in nutrient solution on the development of mulberry root and cold damage. The length of shoots only attained about 50cm and then stopped in case of boron deficiency, while the mulberry trees developed vigorous and attained over 190cm long under boron supply condition. When boron is deficient, the measles appeared on surface of the stem and the necrosis appeared on the petiole, midribs and veins of leaves. At 70 days after planting, almost all new roots and old roots changed to brown, the lateral roots became necrosis by boron deficiency. After three days of stopping boron supply, many new roots changed to brown and after two days of boron resupply, new roots began to grow out and then new roots normally developed. Content of boron in leaves and barks increased by the increase of boron concentration in nutrient solution and maximum boron content in leaves and barks was obtained with boron-sufficient treatment of 0.5ppm. Treatment of 0.5ppm boron supply indicated that the leaves and barks contained more phospholipid, protein, sugar, RNA and proline than treatment of 0.01ppm boron supply in nutrient solution. The cuttings grown in boron supply nutrition have a sufficient tolerance at -10$^{\circ}C$ and -15$^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours while cuttings grown in boron-deficient nutrition have a weak tolerance at the same condition. As mentioned above, we can conclude that the effect of boron deficiency on root development is much severe and the relationship between the lack of boron and cold damage is very closely related.

  • A pot experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of boron on the growth, symptom, yield, and content of boron in Perilla(Perilla frutescens var. japonica HARA), Melon(Cucumis melo L.) and Cucumber(Cucumis sativus L.). The results obtained are as follows. Perilla. melon and cucumber uptake a lot of boron from the soil, and toxic effects of boron result in leaf tip yellowing by progressive necrosis. Yield of perilla, melon and cucumber are decreased at the $3{\sim}5mg\;kg^{-1}$, $5{\sim}10mg\;kg^{-1}$ of boron applicated in soil, respectively. Boron content in the leaf is the highest among various parts plant, and the tip and margin of the leaf contained more boron than central part of the leaf. Boron applicated was moved and accumulated to the plant and soil.

  • A procedure for spectrophotometric determination of traces of boron in high-purity trichlorosilane (TCS) is proposed utilizing an adsorptive separation. NaCl is chosen as an Lewis base adsorbent which forms a complex with boron compounds in TCS, and is well dissolved in sulfuric acid-quinalizarin color-forming agent without causing an interference in colorimetric measurements. The proposed adsorptive separation method is free from the formation of silica gel and gas bubbles during the analysis of TCS. The method reveals that the boron concentration in a semiconductor grade TCS is 6.1 ${\mu}$g/l within the standard deviation of ${\pm}$20%. On the other hand, the boron concentration of the purified TCS which is separated from NaCl-boron compounds complex is reduced to 0.2 ${\mu}$g/l, showing the efficient applicability of NaCl to the adsorptive separation. The effectiveness of NaCl for the removal of boron in TCS purification is also described in comparison with other well-known adsorbents.

  • This study was conducted to find the changes of growth, seed yield and several characteristics of sesame by leaf spray of boron as a solution which is likely to be lack in the soil. It is carried out at low land developed 5 years ago. The amount of 200l /l0a boron as boric acid is sprayed in each treatment at the 11 node stage of sesame in main stem. The spraying concentrations of boric acid are 0.0, 0.2 and 0.4% in each treatment of the level low plot and the ridge height 15cm plot. The result shows that leaf area is increased in proportion to the concentration of boric acid in each treatment of the level low and the ridge height 15cm, and the degree of increase of each node order is remarkable in lower leaves and is more remarkable in the treatment of level low plot. The effects of leaf spray of boric acid are not only the increase of leaf area but also dry weight, no. of capsule per plant, 1,000 grains weight of capsule setting under middle position. As a result, the amount of seed is increased in 53% in the treatment of level low. The change of major characteristics according to leaf spray of boric acid is generally great in the treatment of level low. Especially the increase of leaf area in the part of upper leaves and low leaves is effective to improve other characteristics.

  • The object of this study was to determine the optimum concentrations of boron and IBA and dipping time, and to investigate the effect of combined-treatment of boron and IBA for the improvement of rooting of semi-hardwood cutting of Styrax japonica. The rooting percentage and the number of roots of cuttings increased with short dipping treatment of $7,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ IBA and combined treatment of $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ IBA and $20mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ boron or $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ IBA and $60mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ boron. The rooting percentage, no. of roots and fresh weight were higher in combined treatment of boron and IBA than treatment of IBA alone. Either $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ or $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ was regarded as in appropriate level of IBA and the optimal dipping time was three hour in single treatment of IBA. It is concluded that the combined treatment of low concentrations of IBA and boron could be substituted for the treatment of high concentration IBA.

  • Boron deficiency appeared as a cause of poor growth of sunflower(Helianthus annuus) according to soil and plant analysis. The investigated results are as follows; 1. Boron deficiency was due to low content of available boron (hot water soluble) in soil and clitical concentration appeared as 0.17 ppm. 2. Clitical concentrations in plant appeared to be 20 ppm for head(flower), 25 for leaf, 15 for stem and 10 for root. Boron concentration among positional leaves was greatly decreasing in the upper leaves. 3. Soils low in boron were relatively higher in calcium, silica and pH than in normal soil but relationship between boron and organic matter or other nutrients was uncertain. 4. The content of Ca and P is high in the head of boron deficient plant but low in root. Plants deficient in boron also showed a tendency of high N and low K but no clear tendency was shown in Mg and Fe. 5. Symptoms of boron deficinicy were yellowing of upper leaves, browning and drying of upper part of stem, cracking and blackening of stem and roots resulting short stem and poor growth.

  • In general, boron recovery of 40-90% could be achieved by Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes in neutral pH condition. As an emerging technology, Forward Osmosis (FO) membrane has attracted growing interest in wastewater treatment and desalination. The objective of this study is to evaluate the possibility of the boron removal in radioactive liquid waste by FO. In this study, the performance of FO was investigated to remove boron in the simulated liquid waste as the factors such as pH, osmotic pressure, ionic strength of solution, etc. The pH of feed solution is a major operating parameter which strongly influences to the permeation of boron and more than 80% of boron content can be separated when conducted at pH values less than 7. The water flux is not influenced but the boron flux and permeation rate tends to decrease in the low salt concentration of 1,000 mg/L. The boron flux increases linearly, but the permeation ratio of reducing boron is nearly constant even with changes in the draw solution concentration.

  • The boron transport model has been implemented into the CUPID code to simulate the boron transport phenomena of the PWR. The boron concentration conservation was confirmed through a simulation of a conceptual boron transport problem in which water with a constant inlet boron concentration injected into an inlet of the 2-dimensional vertical flow tube. The step wise boron transport problem showed that the numerical diffusion of the boron concentration can be reduced by the second order convection scheme. In order to assess the adaptability of the developed boron transport model to the realistic situation, the ROCOM test was simulated by using the CUPID implemented with the boron transportation.

  • The addition of one mole of zinc chloride to 2.33 moles of sodium borohydride in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature gave a clear chloride-free supernatant solution of zinc borohydride after stirring three days and standing at room temperature. The approximate rates and stoichiometry of the reaction of zinc borohydride with 54 selected organic compounds were determined in order to test the utility of the reagent as a selective reducing agent. Aldehydes and ketones were reduced rapidly, aromatic ketones being somewhat slowly, and the double bond of cinnamaldehyde was not attacked. Acyl halides were reduced rapidly within one hour, but acid anhydrides were reduced at a moderate rate. Carboxylic acids, both aliphatic and aromatic, were slowly reduced to alcoholic stage. Esters were inert to this reagent but a cyclic ester, γ-butyrolactone, was slowly attacked. Primary amides were reduced slowly with partial evolution of hydrogen, whereas tertiary amides underwent neither reduction nor hydrogen evolution. Epoxides and nitriles were all inert, as well as nitro, azo, and azoxy compounds. Cyclohexanone oxime and phenyl isocyanate were reduced slowly but pyridine was inert. Disulfide, sulfoxide, sulfone and sulfonic acids were stable to this reagent.
