A new cultivar potted miniature rose (Rosa hybrida) 'Tiny Ball' was selected out of cross combination 1999 and 2002 at Gumi Floricultural Experiment Station. Characteristics trials were conducted three times from 2003 to 2006. 'Tiny Ball' came from the combination that '990905' crossed to 'Manish'. New cultivar has pink and white flower color and the shape of flower is similar to tiny ball. The number of flower petals and flowers per pot are more than those of 'POULra022' as comparison cultivar. This cultivar has low plant height without treatment of plant retardant materials, so the high quality grade ratio of potted rose is higher than that of comparison cultivar.

Long-term subcultured rose embryogenic calluses, which had been maintained for more than 5 to 6 years since the first embryogenesis from calluses induced from in vitro roots of rose, were identified as potential material for the development of transgenic plants. The first embryogenic calluses from 'Sweet Yellow' and two breeding lines (KR056002 and KR056006) were obtained in 2007 and 2009, respectively. Subsequently, we found that plants regenerated from long-term embryogenic calluses (LEC). Whereas the LEC from 'Sweet Yellow' takes 3 to 4 months to regenerate plants, those of the two breeding lines take 4 to 5 months. This period of time is the same as that taken for plants to regenerate from the first embryogenic callus. New embryogenesis was observed from atypical bodies (ABs) that appeared during the process of long-term subculture. We found that it is possible to use the AB as a material for new embryogenesis.
Objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of nutrient solution strength and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF, Glomus sp.) on growth and flowering of potted miniature rose (Rosa hybrids L. cv 'Scarlet'). To achieve this, plants cultured with six different strength of Japanese Horticultural Experiment Station solution (0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and $4.0\;{\times}\;{full}$ strength) and inoculated with AMP at cutting and transplanting. Leachate EC increased as solution strength were elevated. The leachate EC were not different between non-inoculated plants and AMF treatment at cutting, but significantly decreased when plants were inoculated with AMF at transplanting. The elevated strength of nutrient solution resulted in decrease of leachate pH. When plants were inoculated AMF at transplanting, leachate pH was lower than those of non-inoculated plants and inoculated with AMF at cutting. At harvesting (93 days after transplanting), plant height, leaf width, number of branches and shoot fresh and dry weight of rose 'Scarlet' increased with elevated nutrient solution strength. AMF treatment at transplanting of potted rose 'Scarlet' showed the best results in growth such as chlorophyll content, number of flowers, and shortening the days required to flower. The content of N, P, K, and Mn in leaf tissue of potted rose increased by elevated nutrient solution strength and AMF treatment, while the tissue Na contents decreased by an AMF treatment.
This study was conducted to evaluate effects of various eco light sources with various lighting distance in 'Viking' rose (Rosa spp.) on the growth and flowering quality to be applied for farm sites. Treatment included 10-, 20-, and 30-RL (-BL, -RBL, -FL, and -IL), which referred to red LED (blue LED, red+blue LED, fluorescent, and incandescent) lighting at 10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm respectively, apart from flowers. NL referred to natural light as a control. Growth and flowering of 'Viking' rose were non-destructively measured at 4, 6, and 8 weeks after treatment (WAT). FL treatment increased plant height at 4, 6, and 8 WAT, regardless of lighting distance, with the shortest height observed for the NL-treated flowers. 30 RL treatment also increased plant height at 6 and 8 WAT. Stem diameter and number of leaves were not significantly different for all the treatments at 8 WAT, with the lowest values observed for RBL treated-flowers among the light source treatments. Number of root was the greatest for the 30 BL-treated flowers (10.0) but the fewest for the 30 FL (4.7). Length of flower neck at 6 WAT was the extended by 6~7 cm in the 10 FL and 20 FL treatments as well as by 5~6 cm in the 20 RL and 30 RL treatments, inducing 100% of flowering. NL increased $a^*$ (29) of flower color, with the lowest value (10) observed for 20 RL. All things considered, 30 RL would be the best interaction treatment of source and distance of eco light to improve plant height and flowering quality of 'Viking' rose.
Useful Dianthus species were collected and selected from two native and seven foreign species distributed in Gangwon province. For in vitro breeding,. callus was induced from the explants of apical meristem, leaf, stem and the in vitro adventitious shoots on MS basal medium with 2.0 mg/L 2,4-D and 0.5 mg/L BA at 27$^{\circ}C$ under continuous light. After 3 weeks of culture, calli initiated the most highly from the leaf explants of D. chinensis Organogenic calli were able to be selected from the adventitious shoot-derived calli. For shoot regeneration, these organogenic calli were cultured on MS medium with the combination of 0.1 mg/L NAA+1.0 mg/L BA under continuous light. Multiple shoots were proliferated with low frequency (about 30%) from those adventitious shootderived calli. Also, shoots initiated directly from the adventitious shoot explants without callus formation at high frequency of 52% when cultured on N6 medium containing 0.1 mg/L NAA and 1.0 mg/L BA in D. gratianopol. Multiple shoots and plantlets grew well and rooted on MS medium supplemented with 0.1 mg/L NAA. Regenerants with well-developed roots were transferred to 8-cm pots containing vermiculite at 85% relative humidity and 27$^{\circ}C$ These plantlets were acclimatized in artificial soil mixture and transferred to the greenhouse for flowering with normal phenotypes. M28 Mutant line was selected with white flowers from 0.03M EMS-treated organogenic calli derived from in vitro adventitious shoot explants of D. chinensis and set seeds.

This study was carried out to compare the survival and mutation rates and mutation spectrum by gamma-irradiation on rooted and unrooted cuttings of three spray type ('Lovelydia', 'Yellowbabe', and 'Haetsal') and two standard type ('Vital' and 'Aqua') cultivars in roses. Two groups, rooted and unrooted cuttings were gamma-irradiated at 70Gy for 24 hours. The irradiated rooted and unrooted cuttings were planted in a greenhouse, and survival, mutation rates and mutation spectrum were investigated 30 weeks after planting, respectively. As a result, survival and mutation rates of gamma-ray irradiated plants were 16.4%~50.8% and 0~5.1% for unrooted cuttings, and 39.4%~55.1% and 0.7%~7.4% for rooted cuttings, respectively. In conclusion, both survival and mutation rates were a little higher on rooted cuttings than on unrooted cuttings. However, when only survived plants after gamma-ray irradiation were considered, mutation rates were 0~10% and 1.8%~14.1% for unrooted cuttings and rooted cuttings, respectively, showing no significant difference. In addition, diverse variations on color and number of petals or shape of flowers were detected both in plants from rooted and unrooted cuttings, which indicated that there was no significant difference in mutation spectrum between two groups.
Halophytes have been reported to possess a variety of physiological activities, such as anti-cancer, anti-oxidant, anti-diabetes, anti-inflammatory, and anti-obesity. Studies on the roots of the halophyte Rosa rugosa, in particular, have shown a variety of physiological activities and are known to be effective for nursing diabetic complications in traditional Korean medicine. In this study, the effect of R. rugosa on adipogenesis was investigated in 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes treated with crude extract and solvent fractions (H2O, n-BuOH, 85% aq. MeOH, and n-Hex) obtained from R. rugosa roots. Treatment with extract and the solvent fractions inhibited the formation of intracellular lipid droplets in differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes compared to the untreated group. In particular, n-BuOH and 85% aq. MeOH fractions effectively decreased the expression of adipogenic transcription factors: peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-γ (PPARγ), CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein α (C/EBPα), and sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1c (SREBP1c) in both mRNA and protein levels. In conclusion, these results suggest that R. rugosa contains anti-adipogenic molecules that can be utilized as a nutraceutical against obesity. Further refining of n-BuOH and 85% aq. MeOH fractions and analysis of their action mechanisms could yield potential therapeutic agents with anti-adipogenic effects.
The process to acquire intron-GUS gene-expressed transformants from somatic embryos (including embryogenic calli) of Rosa hybrida cv. 'Sweet Yellow' using Agrobacterium-meditated transformation method was reported in this study. Somatic embryos including embryogenic calluses were infected with Agrobacterium tumefaciens AGL1 strain (O.D = 0.7~1.6) including intron-GUS gene for 30 min, and were co-cultured for 3 days. After co-cultivation, they were cultured on embryo germination medium (EGM) supplemented with $250\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ cefotaxim at $4^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. Then, transient GUS gene expression was observed. Shoots were regenerated from the shoot primodia induced from the intron-GUS gene-transferred either somatic embryos or embryogenic calli cultured on EGM supplemented with both cefotaxim $250\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and ppt $2\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Before induction of rooting from shoots cultured on shoot growing medium supplemented with both cefotaxim $250\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and ppt $2\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$, the shoots were cultured on multi-shoot induction medium supplemented with both cefotaxim $250\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and ppt $2\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ to induce multi-shoots. When expression of the gene from a part of the multi-shoots was identified by GUS transient assay, the putative transgenic multishoots were transferred to rooting medium supplemented with cefotaxim $250\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. After the formation of healthy roots, transgenic plantlets were transferred to the greenhouse after acclimatization. The expression rate of the intron-GUS gene in the multi-shoots was 100%.

Phylogenetic relationships between 8 species Korean loaches (Cobitidae) were investigated by comparing mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequences. However our results are in accordance with finding observed using other morphological studies, new interesting interspecific variation in Korean loaches were found. Orthrias and Lefua appeared to be paraphyletic in Cobitidae observed. Their sequence divergence value was agreed with interfamilic sequence divergences between Cobitidae and Cyprinidae ranged from 0.184 to 0.272. Otherwise, the present results support that two species of Iksookimia and Cobitis melanoleuca were early diverged respectively. And another remarkable result was sequence divergence between Misgurnus anguillicaudatus from China and M. anguillicaudatus from Yongdok, Korea. That was 0.099, which was interspecific value. Also the phylogenetic location of some Iksookimia species was suggested as the cobitid intergeneric hybrid origin.
