  • In this paper, the linearity of Doherty power amplifier has been improved by applying a new Photonic Bandgap(PBG) structure on the output of amplifier. The reposed spiral PBG structure is a two-dimensional(2-D) periodic lattice patterned on a dielectric slab that does not require nonplanar fabrication process. This structure has more broad stopband and high suppression performance than the conventional three cell PBG. Also, It has a sharp skirt property. We obtained the 3rd-order intermodulation distortion(IMD3) of -33dBc for CDMA applications with that of maintaining the constant power added efficiency(PAE), the IMD3 performance is improved as much as -8 dB compared with a Doherty power amplifier without PBG structure. Moreover, the physical length of PBG is shortened, therefore the whole amplifier circuit size is considerably reduced.

  • In this paper, we design and implement an Android-based Hangul food menu recognition application that recognizes characters from images captured by a smart phone. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology is divided into preprocessing, recognition and post-processing. In the preprocessing process, the characters are extracted using Maximally Stable Extremal Regions (MSER). In recognition process, Tesseract-OCR, a free OCR engine, is used to recognize characters. In the post-processing process, the wrong result is corrected by using the dictionary DB for the food menu. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, experiments were conducted to compare the recognition performance using the actual menu plate as the DB. The recognition rate measurement experiment with OCR Instantly Free, Text Scanner and Text Fairy, which is a character recognizing application in Google Play Store, was conducted. The experimental results show that the proposed method shows an average recognition rate of 14.1% higher than other techniques.

  • In this paper, we introduce a satellite conceptual design software which can be used for outlining a new satellite as well as for educational purpose. This software consists of three commercial tools: MATLAB, STK(Satellite Tool Kit), and Excel. The management of the design software is done by MATLAB which provides basic calculations, GUI(Graphical User Interface), Excel data base management, and STK control. STK, an orbital simulation software developed by AGI, takes a part of obtaining accurate orbital information of a satellite. Excel, a product of Microsoft, is used for the data base of previous satellites and for the saving place of temporary and final results of the software. The conceptual design of a satellite is to roughly estimate power system and mass. In the power system design, the sizes of solar array and battery are determined. Based on the database of existing satellites, we can estimate the subsystems's mass fraction of a target satellite. Design examples for Kompsat 1 and 2 are suggested for verification of the developed software.

  • Recently, a cable disconnection accident occurred due to a lightning strike at the Seohae Bridge located in Dangjin-Pyeongtaek City. This is a natural occurrence, but it is a recall that it is very important to review the safety issues due to the disconnection of cable bridges. In other words, the role of cables in cable bridges has a profound effect on the safety of the structure, and it has become necessary to grasp the effect on the entire structural system. The cable bridge is an economic bridge that builds the main tower and supports the bottom plate by cable. The influence of the cable is the main member, which is a big influence on the safety of the whole bridge system. In the cable-stayed bridge, the cables exhibit nonlinear behavior because of the change in sag, due to the dead weight of the cable, which occurs with changing tension in the cable resulting from the movement of the end points of the cable as the bridge is loaded. Modal analysis is conducted using the deformed dead-load tangent stiffness matrix. A new concept was presented by using divided a cable into several elements in order to study the effect of the cable vibration (both in-plane and swinging) on the overall bridge dynamics. The result of this study demonstrates the importance of cable vibration on the overall bridge dynamics.

  • Purpose: The effect of orthognathic surgery on the temporomandibular dysfunction has been controversial. The purpose of this study is to prove statistically that early removal of fixation plate at postoperative 2 weeks with active exercise of mouth opening could relieve preoperative temporomandibular dysfunction and reposition of temporomandibular joint. Patients and Methods: All 28 subject patients underwent mandibular setback with BSSRO in Kyunghee medical center by one surgeon. The fixation plates used for rigid fixation were removed at postoperative 2 weeks and we had the patients excercise active mouth opening with intermaxillary rubber rings for the guiding proper postoperative occlusion. Temporomandibular symptoms were checked and radiographs were taken before surgery, within a month after surgery, six to twelve months after surgery respectively. Results: The temporomandibular dysfunction symptoms were relieved after the surgery and the condyle was displaced inferior-posteriorly immediate after surgery and repositioned toward its original position during follow-up periods. Conculusion: Orthognathic surgery may benefit temporomandibular joint dysfunction by obtaining a postoperative stable occlusion and more physiologic neuromuscular function. The early removal of fixation plates after BSSRO could reposition the temporomandibular joint to physiologic position and relieve the symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction by permitting movement of proximal segment.

  • In this paper, the power added efficiency(PAE) of class F power amplifier is improved by applying a new Photonic Bandgap (PBG) structure on the output of amplifier. The proposed spiral PBG structure is a two-dimensional (2-D) periodic lattice patterned on a dielectric slab that does not require nonplanar fabrication process. This structure bas higher suppression performance at second harmonic. Also, It has a sharp skirt property. This new PBG structure can be applied with class F power amplifier for efficiency improvement. We obtained the PAE of 73.62 % for CDMA applications, and the PAE performance is improved as much as 6.2 % compared with that of a conventional class F power amplifier.

  • In this paper, a reliability-based design optimization is developed for the topology design of linear structures using a performance measure approach. Spatial domain is discretized using three dimensional Reissner-Mindlin plate elements and design variable is taken as the material property of each element. A continuum based adjoint variable method is employed for the efficient computation of sensitivity with respect to the design and random variables. The performance measure approach of RBDO is employed to evaluate the probabilistic constraints. The topology optimizationproblem is formulated to have probabilistic displacement constraints. The uncertainties such as material property and external loads are considered. Numerical examples show that the developed topology optimization method could effectively yield a reliable design, comparing with the other methods such as deterministic, safety factor, and worst case approaches.

  • This study deals with a method to identify structural damage using the combined finite element method (FEM) and the advanced damage search technique. The novelty of this study is the application of plates with arbitrary damage shapes and their response due to the anomalies in a structure subjected to impact loading. The technique described in this paper may allow us not only to detect the stiffness distribution of the damaged areas but also to find locations and the extent of damage. To demonstrate the feasibility of the method, the algorithm is applied to a steel thin plate structures with an arbitrary damage shape. The results demonstrate the excellencies of the method from the standpoints of computation efficiency as well as its ability to investigate the arbitrary stiffness reductions.

  • Public open space(Gong-Gae-Gong-Ji) is an important part of the open-space system in an urban environment. Though part of the private sector, it has a significant public function as there are as always open to the free use of every citizen for rest and amenities. A field survey of the public open space of 71 major buildings was carried out to investigate the actual state of public open spaces in the city of Daegu. As a result of this investigation, several point of issues were discussed. In distribution by 'Gu', newly-emerging sub-centers of Daegu-City, such as Bug-Gu and Dalseo-Gu as well as downtown area have many public open spaces. By the use type of buildings, retail buildings such as shopping centers and SSM account for36.6%, business buildings21.1%, and residential and commercial complexes 15.5%, respectively. Location wise, the front areas accounted for the greatest amount(42.9%) with 1 in side area(20%), and 2 in the front/side area(20%), respectively. Degree of division was 1 spot type(45.7%), 2 division type(35.7%). The misuse of public open space for private use, such as shopping and parking lots, was26.6%. On the basis and analysis of the actual status, 6 improvement devices for public open spaces were suggested: 1) The improvement of the legal regulative system, 2) the establishment of design guidelines and strengthening of deliberation, 3) administrative and financial support, 4) periodic supervision and guidance, 5) installment of signs that shows the space is open for use to every citizen, and 6) the participation of citizens in management of public open space.

  • Purpose: The aims of this study were to find brain regions in which gray matter volume was reduced and to show the capability of voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis for lateralizing epileptogenic zones in medial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE). The findings were compared with fluorodeoxyglucose positron omission tomography (FDG PET). Materials and Methods: MR T1-weighted images of 12 left mTLE and 11 right mTLE patients were compared with those of 37 normal controls. Images were transformed to standard MNI space and averaged in order to create study-specific brain template. Each image was normalized to this local template and brain tissues were segmented. Modulation VBM analysis was performed in order to observe gray matter volume change. Gray matter was smoothed with a Gaussian kernel. After these preprocessing, statistical analysis was peformed using statistical parametric mapping software (SPM99). FDG PET images were compared with those of 22 normal controls using SPM. Results: Gray matter volume was significantly reduced in the left amygdala and hippocampus in left mTLE. In addition, volume of cerebellum, anterior cingulate, and fusiform gyrus in both sides and left insula was reduced. In right mTLE, volume was reduced significantly in right hippocampus. In contrast, FDG uptake was decreased in broad areas of left or right temporal lobes in left TLE and right TLE, respectively. Conclusions: Gray matter loss was found in the ipsilateral hippocampus by modulation VBM analysis in medial temporal lobe epilepsy. This VBM analysis might be useful in lateralizing the epileptogenic zones in medial temporal lobe epilepsy, while SPM analysis of FDG PET disclosed hypometabolic epileptogenic zones.
