  • Predicting possible distributed area of Schisandra chinensis which has long term cultivation period among non-timber forest products is needed to be studied to deal with climate change. Hence, distribution of Schisandra chinensis in the 2050s and 2070s was predicted under two scenario, RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5, with ensemble of 5 climate models used in IPCC AR5. According to estimation using RCP 4.5, distribution of Schisandra chinensis in 2050s appeared to decrease 43% of current area and appeared to decrease 57% in 2070s respectively. Moreover, According to estimation using RCP 8.5, distribution of Schisandra chinensis in 2050s appeared to decrease 55% of current area and appeared to decrease 85% in 2070s. As a final outcome, Schisandra chinensis was estimated to extinct in the future except Gangwon-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do when analyzing change between current distributed area and future distributed area. As a result, those areas were classified as vulnerable areas to climate change. Therefore, Gangwon-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do were thought to be ideal for growing Schisandra chinensis. The result from this study can be used to provide basic information for selecting proper area of Schisandra chinensis considering climate change effect.

  • A field and laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of visible biopores (larger than 0.2 mm in diameter) on the saturated hydraulic conductivity of Bonryang sandy loam (Coarse loamy over sandy, mixed, mesic family of Typic Udifluvents) developed on alluvial plains. The saturated hydraulic conductivity was significantly correlated with the equivalent permeble surface area (EPSA) which was calculated from the number of various sized biopores in the soil observed by naked eye, and negatively correlated with the bulk density. The effect of biopores on the saturated hydraulic conductivity was remarkable in subsoil al though it was not pronounced in plowed layer and sandy substrata. The bulk density was found to be correlated with the number and the EPSA of the visible biopores. A remarkable spatial variability was observed in the number of biopore and the bulk density.

  • In recent years, international migration of professional workers is significantly increasing as globalization has been deepened more and more. South Korea is not an exception for this case. Immigration of professional workers have steadily increased since 2000 in Korea, and the number reached approximately to 50,000 in 2009. In addition, it is a major trend that immigrants of short-sojourn are decreasing and ones of long-sojourn increasing. Our research shows that foreign language instructor has the greatest number of foreign professional immigrants. The next is professional immigrants related to business-activities. There are considerably entertainers, but they have greatly decreased since 2003. Majority of foreign professional immigrants settle down in a few metropolises. Especially, they reside in Seoul Metropolitan Area and Southeast coastal region. Professional immigrants trend to do with Korean on the base of their offices rather than residental communities in terms of adaptation, and they do not have strong will to reside permanently in Korea. Moreover, they are located at a blind spot of Korean government's foreign immigrant policy, comparing to foreign workers and female marriage immigrants.

  • A perennial plant species of Ranunculaceae, Pulsatilla tongkangensis is a very rare species only found in limestone vegetation of South Korea. It is not only rare but also has great value as a horticultural resource, thus resulting in serious problems of overexploitation and habitat disturbance. For the conservation of the rare species and its development as a resource, the study was conducted with the following three aims: first, to investigate any new geographical distribution of the species; second, to identify the site condition and vegetation structure of its habitat; and third, to compare the ecology of P. tongkangensis in other microhabitats such as rock, slope and ridge area. A new distribution was found in limestone vegetation at Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. It was, therefore, confirmed that the distribution of P. tongkangensis exactly coincides with the area of distribution of limestone, indicating a possibility that the species might be a calcicole. 87% of the microhabitats found in rocks. Compared to P. tongkangensis, at ridges or slopes, number of P. tongkangensis plants were few in rocks. It is possibly due to the lack of microhabitats that could settle in rocky areas. Once established on rocks, however, plants grew large enough to flower with higher number of leaves and flowers per plant, resulting in higher flowering rate on rocky areas. Cracks in/between rocks are likely to be safe places for the plants with favorable light conditions, abundant fine particles to root down and reduced competition for resources. Yet, further research is necessary in terms of determining whether the species is indeed a calcicole, whether other limiting factors work in its establishment stage, and genetic diversity exists in the population.

  • The distribution of cryophilous arctic-alpine and alpine plants in Korea is reviewed in connection with palaeoenvironment, along with a discussion to their origins, patterns of migration, and their refugia. At present, the estimated number of Korean arctic-alpine and alpine species is 419, and this includes 75 arctic-alpine species, 239 alpine species and 105 Korean endemic alpine species. The disjunctive distribution of cryophilous arctic-alpine and alpine plants is likely to be due to first, the downslope and southward expansion of those species towards the Korean peninsula as a primary refugia from the arctic region as the Pleistocene glacial phases approached, and then their subsequent isolation upslope in mountain areas toward a secondary refugia as the interglacial and post-glacial climatic ameliorations followed; secondly, the expansion of forest tree communities on lowland and montane areas subsequent to the end of the Pleistocene has had the effect of dividing formerly high mountains as a result of the increased competition; and thirdly, the general disapperance or restriction of available habitats for arctic-alpine and alpine species because of post-glacial climatic amelioration. The existence of 139 alpine species exclusively in the north of Korea may be due to the following reasons; first, frequent exchanges of alpine floras with other neighbouring East Asian regions would have been facilitated; secondly, there are numerous high mountains available for the alpine plants to survive and prosper during the post-glacial period; thirdly, the existence of easy accesses between mountains within the north, which has enabled alpine floras to migrate when necessary; and finally, the availability of diverse environments and habitats for the alpine flora of the north. However, the continued survival of those species in Korea at the world's or East Asia's southernmost limits of their distribution for many species is in danger if global warming associated with the greenhouse effect takes place.

  • A precise echosounding system to investigate the topographical characteristics of the coastal fishing ground was composed of a public-DGPS receiver, a single beam echosounder and a survey software. To confirm the usefulness of the system, a set-net fishing ground and the distribution of artificial reefs were surveyed. The results obtained are as follows : 1. The 2-D positioning error of the public-DGPS receiver with a DGPS mode and a GPS mode was 5.47 m, 7.03 m, respectively. 2. The experimented set-net fishing ground was located on the level ground at the depth of 9-10 m, a small size valley 1-2 m deep and approximately 10 m wide was found at a distance of 120 m from the set-net to the south. 3. In the artificial reefs' water area near the Jaran Bay, it was confirmed that twenty rectangular artificial reefs were established by the piece at the depth of 15-25 m and a natural reef 5-8 m high on the sea bed was located near the group of artificial reefs. 4. It was confirmed that the precise echosounding system was a useful tool in the pre-study to choice an appropriate water area to provide the artificial reef.

  • Distribution of drifting larvae of scallop, Patinopecten yessoensis, was studied in the Yeong-il Bay in 1973, 1978, and 1979. The range of the bottom water temperature was 10∼19$^{\circ}C$ and that of salinity was 32.58∼34.55 . The larvae appeared from early March to mid-July with maximum abundance from mid- April to early June. Drifting period of larvae is about a month, and then the larvae begin to settle on the substratum. In the Yeong-il Bay setting period was from early Arpil to late June with maximum abundance from mid-May to eary June. The highest density of drifting larvae was found in the vicinity of Dae-dong-bae(Station H) among the observed stations, and the density was much higher in 1979 than in the other years observed. Vertical distribution of the larvae is closely related to the depth of the water column. High density of the larvae was observed in the bottom layer. The larvae were most abundant in the bottom-most layer, and in the place where the water depth is 24m, 42% appeared in the 4m layer from the bottom, and 80% in the 8m layer from the bottom, and where the water depth is 16m, 50% in the bottom-most 4m, and 90% in the layer up to 8m.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze gold-silver mineral potential in the Taebaeksan mineralized district, Korea using a Geographic Information System(GIS) and an artificial neural network(ANN) model. A spatial database considering Au and Ag deposit, geology, fault structure and geochemical data of As, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb and Zn was constructed for the study area using the GIS. The 46 Au and Ag mineral deposits were randomly divided into a training set to analyze mineral potential using ANN and a test set to verify mineral potential map. In the ANN model, training sets for areas with mineral deposits and without them were selected randomly from the lower 10% areas of the mineral potential index derived from existing mineral deposits using likelihood ratio. To support the reliability of the Au-Ag mineral potential map, some of rock samples were selected in the upper 5% areas of the mineral potential index without known deposits and analyzed for Au, Ag, As, Cu, Pb and Zn. As the result, No. 4 of sample exhibited more enrichments of all elements than the others.
