An Analysis of the Elementary Mathematics Textbooks in Singapore: Focused on the Model Method (싱가포르의 초등학교 수학 교과서 분석: 모델 메소드(model method)를 중심으로)

  • A model method has been known as the main characteristic of Singaporean elementary mathematics textbooks. However, little research has been conducted on how the model method is employed in the textbooks. In this study, we extracted contents related to the model method in the Singaporean elementary mathematics curriculum and then analyzed the characteristics of the model method applied to the textbooks. Specifically, this study investigated the units and lessons where the model method was employed, and explored how it was addressed for what purpose according to the numbers and operations. The results of this study showed that the model method was applied to the units and lessons related to operations and word problems, starting from whole numbers through fractions to decimals. The model method was systematically applied to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division tailored by the grade levels. It was also explicitly applied to all stages of the problem solving process. Based on these results, this study described the implications of using a main model in the textbooks to demonstrate the structure of the given problem consistently and systematically.

A Longitudinal Study on the Mathematical Contents Changed in 2015 National Revised Curriculum for Elementary School Mathematics (2015 개정 초등 수학과 교육과정의 변화 내용에 대한 종적 분석)

  • The 2015 national revised curriculum was notified officially the last year. The intent and direction of the revision caused more or less change for mathematical contents to be taught and is expected to cause a considerable change in math class. In the level of elementary school mathematics, it turned that several contents were deleted or moved to the upper grades because the revision focused especially both on reducing students' burden of learning and on fostering the mathematical key competences. This study aims to examine the relevance of the change through investigation of the national curriculums for elementary school mathematics since 1946. The mathematical contents to be analyzed in this study were mixed calculation of natural numbers, mixed calculation of fractions and decimal fractions, position and direction of objects, are/hectare and ton, the range of numbers and estimating, surface and volume of cylinders, pattern and correspondence, and direct/inverse proportionality, which were changed in any aspect relative to 2009 national revised curriculum. Based on the results of these analyses, the discussion will provide some suggestions for setting the direction of elementary mathematics curriculum.

Examining SENKs' and Teachers' Recognition about Mathematics Teaching and Learning (탈북학생과 지도교사의 수학 교수·학습 인식 조사)

  • SENKs (Students who Emigrated from North Korea to South Korea) are exposed to the general problem of Su-Po-Ja(mathematics give-uppers) as well as their own difficulty in learning mathematics. In this study, we conducted the FGI (focus group interview) in order to examine the recognition on mathematics teaching and learning in South Korea with 6 SENKs and 3 teachers who teach the SENKs. As a result, it was found that SENKs' had difficulties in understanding math because of the differences in math terminology used in South and that in North Korea, the unfamiliar problem situation used in math lesson, and the shortage of time for solving math problem. And the teachers reported that they had difficulties in teaching great deal of basic math, SENKs' weak will to learn math, and SENKs' lack of understanding about problem situation because of the inexperience about culture and society in South Korea.

Optimization of the Number of Active Antennas for Energy-Efficiency in the MIMO Broadcast Channel (다중 사용자 다중 안테나 하향링크 채널에서 에너지 효율 향상을 위한 기지국 활성 안테나 수 최적화 기법)

  • We introduce a number of antenna optimization problem for the zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF) scheme to enhance energy-efficiency (EE) of the multiple-input-multiple-output broadcast channel. For proposed optimization problem, we assume an instantaneous channel gain of the ZFBF scheme as an average channel gain, given by $N_a-K+1$, in order to reduce a computational complexity of finding the number of active antennas $N_a$. Then, we convert a fractional-form objective function into a subtractive-form, and find a solution of $N_a$ and the maximum EE by an iterative process. Simulation results show that the maximum EE value obtained by proposed algorithm is almost identical to the optimal EE value by the exhaustive search method.

Coherent Understanding on Addition/Subtraction from the Viewpoint of Measuring (측정의 관점에서 본 덧.뺄셈의 통합적 이해)

  • Current school mathematics introduces addition/subtraction between natural numbers, fractions, decimal fractions, and square roots, step-by-step in order. It seems that, however, school mathematics focuses too much on learning the calculation method of addition/subtraction between each stages of numbers, to lead most of students to understand the coherent principle, lying in addition/subtraction algorithm between real numbers in all. This paper raises questions on this problematic approach of current school mathematics, in learning addition/subtraction. This paper intends to clarify the fact that, if we recognize addition/subtraction between numbers from the viewpoint of 'measuring' and 'common measure', as Dewey did when he argued that the psychological origin of the concept of number was measuring, then we could find some common principles of addition/subtraction operation, beyond the superficial differences among algorithms of addition/subtraction between each stages of numbers. At the end, this paper suggests the necessity of improving the methods of learning addition/subtraction in current school mathematics.

Suspectible Object Detection Method for Radiographic Images (방사선 검색기 영상 내의 의심 물체 탐지 방법)

  • This paper presents a method to extract objects in radiographic images where all the allowable combinations of segmented regions are compared to a target object using Fourier descriptor. In the object extraction for usual images, a main problem is occlusion. In radiographic images, there is an advantage that the shape of an object is not occluded by other objects. It is because radiographic images represent the amount of radiation penetrated through objects. Considering the property of no occlusion in radiographic images, the shape based descriptors can be very effective to find objects. After all, the proposed object extraction method consists of three steps of segmenting regions, finding all the combinations of the segmented regions, and matching the combinations to the shape of the target object. In finding the combinations, we reduce a lot of computations to remove unnecessary combinations before matching. In matching, we employ Fourier descriptor so that the proposed method is rotation and shift invariant. Additionally, shape normalization is adopted to be scale invariant. By experiments, we verify that the proposed method works well in extracting objects.
