In this study, the relationship between partition coefficients(Kw) of oils and antimicrobial effects Ivas investigated. The antimicrobial activity of paraben has been known to be controlled by the concentration of the paraben in the aqueous phase. The concentration of paraben in the aqueous phase was measured by the UV/VIS spectrophotometer at the wavelength of 256nm. It was found that the hydrocarbon oils and silicone oils had the lowest Kw value(<1.0) among the tested oils. Also, the emulsions which were made of oils having low Kw values had a good antimicrobial effects. Thus, the cosmetic safety against microorganisms could be improved by using the oils which have low Kw values.
Previous finite element studies have shown that AASHTO Standard load distribution factor (LDF) equations appear to be conservative for longer spans and larger girder spacing, but too permissible for short spans and girder spacing. AASHTO LRFD specification defines the distribution factor equation for girder spacing, span length, slab thickness, and longitudinal stiffness. However, this equation requires an iterative procedure to correctly determine the LDF value due to an initially unknown longitudinal stiffness parameter. This study presents a simplified LDF equation for interior and exterior girders of two-span continuous I-girder bridges that does not require an iterative design procedure. The finite element method was used to investigate the effect of girder spacing, span length, slab thickness, slab width, and spacing and size of bracing. The computer program, GTSTRUDL, was used to idealize the bridge superstructures as the eccentric beam model, the concrete slab by quadrilateral shell elements, steel girders by space frame members, and the composite action between these elements by rigid links. The distribution factors obtained from these analyses were compared with those from the AASHTO Standard and LRFD methods. It was observed through the parametric studies that girder spacing, span length, and slab thickness were the dominant parameters compared with others. The LRFD distribution factor for the interior girder was found to be conservative in most cases, whereas the factor for the exterior girder to be unconservative in longer spans. Furthermore, a regression analysis was performed to develop simplified LDF formulas. The formulas developed in this study produced LDF values that are always conservative to those from the finite element method and are generally smaller than the LDF values obtained from the AASHTO LRFD specification. The proposed simplified equation will assist bridge engineers in predicting the actual LDF in two-span continuous I-girder bridges.

The partitioning tracer method has been studied as an alternative method for detecting and characterizing the distribution of nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) contaminants in subsurface. The reliability of the partitioning tracer method depends on accurate measurements of partition coefficients of the partitioning tracers between water and NAPLs. In this study, partition coefficients of several alcohol tracers between water and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and BTEX mixtures are estimated using the modified approach of equivalent alkane carbon number (EACN). Agreements between the measured and estimated partition coefficients were generally observed in experiments. Based on these results, it is confirmed that the partition coefficients of tracers are readily obtained without experiments if the EACN values for the tracers and LNAPLs are known.
Fly ash and betonite samples were selected and characteristics of them were investigated. Fly ash was found to be similar to bentonite in particle size distribution but quite different in microstructure. The most special aspect of fly ash was high alkalinity of its solution. Distribution coefficients of Cs and Co on the samples were measured to survey the effects of mixing. Fly ash showed higher distribution coefficient of Co than that of Cs. Through various experiments, factors affecting the distribution coefficients of Co and Cs on mixture of bentonite and fly ash were identified. Comparison of the distribution coefficients of Cs on fly ash and bentonite mixture with those on sand and bentonite mixture suggests that fly ash would be useful as an efficient additive of backfill material if pertinent mixing ratio was chosen.
Partition coefficient related composition of LPG are studied. Analysed sulfur compounds are ethyl mer-captan,n-propyl mercaptan and n-butyl mercaptan. The composition of liquid phase and gas phase in LPG are deter-mined by gas chromatography. The partition coefficient to related the boiling point of sulfur compounds, the temperature and the compositions of solvents, determined by using MLR(multiple linear regression) of SAS is follows; Kpc= $0.61222({\pm}0.6578)-0.04670({\pm}0.000959)Bp+0.26984(\pm0.06504)C4+0.003803(^{\circ}ae0.0019993)Tk,$ N=24, F=14.851, $R^2_{adj}$=0.6437. The boiling points of sulfur compounds at atmospheric pressure and the compositions of LPG effect mostly on partition coefficients. It is presumed that the gas odor elevating effects should be increased, where being on high tem-perature and larger amounts of n-butane.
Distribution coefficient ($K_d$) is an universal parameter estimating cadmium partition for a soil-water-crop system in agricultural lands. This study was performed to find some factors affecting soil-water partition coefficients for cadmium in some Korean soils. The distribution coefficients ($K_d$) of cadmium for the 15 series of agricultural soils were measured at quasi-steady state in the pH ranges from 2 to 11. The adsorption data of the selected soils showed a linear relationship between log $K_d$ and pH, which was well agreed with theoretically expected results ; $log\;K_d=0.6339pH+0.5532(r^2=0.70^{**})$. Normalization of the partition coefficients were performed in a range of pH 3.5 ~ 8.5 to minimize adverse effects of Al dissolution, cationic competition, and organic matter dissolution. The $K_d$-om, partition coefficients normalized for organic matter, improved this linearity to the pH of soils. The values of $K_d$-om measured from the field samples were significantly correlated with those of $K_d$ predicted from the sorption-edge experimental data ($r^2=0.68^{**}$).

The Live load distribution factors currently used in the standard prestressed concrete I-girder bridge are just a reflection of overseas design standards. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an equation of the live load distribution factors fit for the design conditions of Korea, considering the standardized section and the design strength of concrete. In this study, the major variables to determine of distribution factors were selected and an equation of live load distribution factors was developed.
Bentonite has low hydraulic conductivity and high sorption capacity to limit hazardous heavy metals migration, and thus it has been considered as a liner material for the landfill of hazardous wastes. With a domestic bentonite sorption tests were carried out to investigate the adsorption isotherm and the effect of solution chemistry and temperature on adsorption. Freundlich isotherm was applied to fit the experimental data of lead adsorption, which fitted them well. Freundlich constants and correlation coefficient were calculated to be $K_{F}$\;=\;1.14$, n = 1.70, and $r^{2}\;=\;0.99$, respectively. The distribution coefficients($K_{d}$) for the adsorption of lead decreased with increasing initial lead concentration. The IL increased with increasing the pH of solution and sharply increased at pH > 7, which was attributed to the precipitation of lead species. The IL decreased with increasing the ion strength of solution. The $K_{d}$ gave a small increase with the concentration of ${SO_4}^{-2}$, whereas it had a nearly constant level with the concentration of ${HCO_3}^{-}$ in solution. An increase in the temperature of experimental solution increased the $K_{d}$.
The AASHTO wheel load distribution factor (LDF) equation has been with us since 1931 and has undergone minor modifications. In 1994, an entirely new procedure was introduced in the AASHTO LRFD code based on parametric studies and finite element analyses. However, this LDF equation involves a longitudinal stiffness parameter, the design of which is not initially known. Thus, an iterative procedure is required to correctly determine the LDF value. The increased level of complexity puts undue burden on the designer resulting in a higher likelihood for misinterpretation and error. In this study, based on current AASHTO LRFD framework, a new simplified equation is developed that does not require an iterative procedure. A total of 43 representative composite steel girder bridges are selected and analyzed using a finite element model. The new simplified equation produces LDF values that are always conservative when compared to those obtained from the finite element analyses and are generally greater than the LDF obtained using AASHTO LRFD specification. Therefore, the proposed simplified equation is expected to streamline the determination of LDF for bridge design without sacrificing safety.
