  • MoSi2, (Mo1/2W1/2)Si2, and WSi2 powders were synthesized by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) method. The synthesized powders were heat-treated at 500, 1,000, 1,200, 1,300, 1,400, 1,500 and 1,600℃ in ambient atmosphere. Oxidation of Mo-W silicide powder was found at low temperature of 500℃. XRD structure analysis and DTA/TG data showed that MoO3 was formed with 500℃ heat treatment for 1 hour, and that it was α-cristobalite phase that was formed with 1200℃ heat treatment, not α-quartz phase which is commonly found and stable at room temperature. Existence of W accelerated decomposition at both low and high temperature. Fully sintered MoSi2 and (Mo1/2W1/2)Si2 specimen did not show decomposition or weight loss by oxidation, with 1 hour heat treatment at either low or high temperature. Notably, it was difficult to sinter WSi2 because of oxidation reaction at low temperature.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of addition mugwort podwer and carcass grade on the shelf life of pork ham. Pork ham was prepared by four type such as grade B pork ham ( $B_{o}$ ), grade B pork ham containing mugwort powder ( $B_{+}$), grade E pork ham ( $E_{o}$ ) and grade E pork ham containing mugwort powder ( $E_{+}$). The surface color, pH, residual nitrite, VBN (volatile basic nitrogen), TBARS (2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) and total bacterial counts of the samples were determined during storage for 8 weeks at 4$^{\circ}C$. The $L^{*}$ value of $B_{o}$ and $B_{+}$ ham showed higher at the latter period of 8 weeks, that of $E_{o}$ ham was the highest on at the storage of 2nd week and that of $E_{+}$ ham was not different during 8 weeks storage. The $L^{*}$ value of B grade ham was higher than that of E grade ham and the $a^{*}$ value of E grade ham was higher than that of B grade ham. The pH of all ham decreased during storage, but increased from 8 weeks. The residual nitrite of all ham highly decreased until storage for 2 weeks, the addition of mugwort powder was affected in the reduction of residual nitrite of pork ham. The VBN contents were 6.90∼7.90 mg% in the early period of storage, was 14.07∼14.83 mg% on the storage of 8th week. The TBARS of pork ham were increased gradually during storage and pork ham containing mugwort powder showed lower value than pork ham non added mugwort powder during 4th and 6th weeks storage. The total bacterial counts of pork ham were increased gradually during storage and the addition of mugwort powder was not effective.ive.ctive.ive.

  • Styela clava (Korean name: miduduk) tunic was produced as a byproduct after processing of S. clava. To utilize S. clava tunic, fish paste containing tunic powder was prepared, and quality characteristics were evaluated for color, textural properties, and sensory attributes. Increasing the amount of S. clava tunic in fish paste tended to decrease lightness (L), redness (a), and yellowness (b) values of the surface part of fish paste. Strength and hardness of fish paste increased with increasing amount of tunic. All test samples with 3 mm thickness showed good flexibility and did not break even after folding in half four times. For overall acceptance in the sensory evaluation, fish paste containing 1% S. clava tunic acquired a relatively higher score. These results suggest that S. clava tunic can be applied to fish paste products to improve quality and functionality.

  • Powder, or a concentrate, of maesil (Prunus mume) were used in the making of kochujang, and were added to kochujang at 0.5 or 1.0% (w/w). Kochujang fermented with maesil powder lower moisture content than did samples fermented with maesil concentrate. Moisture content slowly increased during fermentation, and was $3{\sim}4%$ higher than the initial value after 8 weeks of fermentation. Kochujang fermented with maesil powder or maesil concentrate showed lower pH values and higher total acidities than did the control. The total microbial count was $3.6{\times}10^7\;5.4{\times}10^7\;cfu/g$, and yeast and mold levels were $2.0{\times}10^7{\sim}3.6{\times}10^7\;cfu/g$, as kochujang fermentation commenced. Microbial load reached a maximum by 4 weeks of fermentation, and decreased thereafter. L (lightness), a (redness) and b (yellowness) values of kochujang gradually decreased during fermentation. Compared to methanol extracts of kochujang, water extracts and ethanol extracts showed higher free radical scavenging abilities at the initial stage of fermentation. Control, and samples with 0.5% (w/w) maesil powder or maesil concentrate, attained higher scores in sensory evaluation tests than did samples with higher maesil levels, and were not significantly different at P>0.05 as determined by Duncan's multiple range test.

  • Blackening on stone monuments is serious problem, because it is not only aesthetically unattractive, but also an important process in stone deterioration. Black surface layers contain often a large amounts of iron compound. Therefore it is assumed that besides another elements the iron have influence on blackening of surface. After the samples of black surface layers were collected from the stone monuments (Museumsinsel) in Berlin, Germany, especially in this study has been used Mossbauer spectroscopy in order to determine the valence and chemical composition of iron. Mineralogical and chemical analyses were carried out X-ray diffractormetry and X-ray fluorescence method on the black surface layer's samples and original stone samples. The origin of Iron compound in the black surface provides the important clue for the conservation work of stone monuments, like removing of black surface. To find it, black surface layer on white sandstone -it contains very small amount of iron compound- was compared with that on the red sandstone (Fe contains very small amount of iron compound- was compared with that on the red sandstone (Fe abundant). As a results, it is assumed that the iron in black layer on white sandstone is originated mainly from a surrounding environmental material and for the iron in black layer on the red sandstone is responsible the original stone. Even if black surface layer was removed from the red sandstone, some other conservation method should be studied beyond removing of black surface layer, because the iron can move continuously from the inner zone of original stone to surface area.

  • Two organophosphorous insecticides, Dichlorovos and Chloropyrifos were degraded in the presence of UV irradiation, UV irradiation with $TiO_2$ powder and UV irradiation with sea sand using low pressure mercury lamp. The identification of these compounds was carried out by gas chromatograph with a nitrogen-phosphorous detector, Total Organic Carbon and Ion Chromatograph, respectively. Both dichlorvos and chloropyrifos, UV irradiation with sea sand were more degradable than UV irradiation and UV irradiation with $TiO_2$ powder. The final products were $Cl^-$ in Dichlorvos, $Cl^-$ $SO_4{^{2-}}$ in Chloropyrifos, respectively.
