Oleyl alcohol, butyl butyrate, and two different ionic liquids were evaluated for the extraction of butanol from culture broth without toxic effect to cells. The tested solvents showed more than 50% extraction efficiency, and oleyl alcohol was chosen as the best extractant for butanol among the used extractants with a partition coefficient of 2.89. When oleyl alcohol was used as an extractant, more than 80% of butanol was extracted in the wide range of butanol concentrations (1-20 g/L) and pH values (pH 4-5.5). In extractive fermentation using oleyl alcohol only, there was 11% more butanol production and glucose consumption when compared to that without extractive fermentation, implicating a reduced inhibitory effect of butanol due to butanol removal to the oleyl alcohol phase. In addition, oleyl alcohol did not inhibit cell growth, while a mixture of oleyl alcohol and butyl butyrate with the volume ratio of 9:1~7:3 inhibited either butanol production or cell growth significantly due to the toxicity of butyl butyrate to cells. In conclusion, oleyl alcohol can be used as an efficient and non-toxic solvent for extractive fermentation for butanol production.

Bio-butanol recovery by pervaporation was performed with dense and composite polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes. The pervaporative behavior of the membranes was investigated as a function of operation temperature $(20{\sim}40^{\circ}C)$ and membrane thickness $(100{\sim}1{\mu}m)$ using a series of aqueous BtOH model solutions $(1{\sim}5wt%)$. With the increment of the BtOH concentration in feed, the Butanol concentration in permeate, pervaporation selectivity of Butanol over water and Butanol permeation flux increased. As the operating temperature of feed solutions increased, the BtOH concentration in permeate, pervaporation selectivity and permeation flux increased markedly. As the thickness of the PDMS membrane decreased, permeation flux increased but pervaporation selectivity decreased. These results were explained in terms of high solubility and low diffusion resistance of BtOH over water toward hydrophobic and rubbery PDMS membranes.
Clostridium acetobutylicum Bl8 can produce a large amount of butanol by control characteristics such as glucose concentration, pH and extra nutrient. It is known that this stain is potentially useful in simultaneous ABE fermentation-seperation system because of its low acid $production^{1).}$ The purpose of this study is to determine optimal condition of fermentation to produce maximum butanol in batch and fed-batch by strain Bl8.
Pervaporation membranes were fabricated by low temperature plasma treatment the concentrate butanol solution from fermentation process. Effects of power, reaction time, and monomer flow rate were examined to optimize the (W!FM)t value as 4.0389 x 109 J . min/kg. Various organic compounds were tested in plasma treatment. Contact angle and relative sorption ratio were examined in terms of membrane performance. With the increase of contact angle and relative sorption ratio separation factor was enhanced from 0.186 to 3.525. and butanol flux increased from 0.042 to 0.567 kglm2. hr. Hydrophobicity of the membrane increased the affinity with butanoL Heat of mixing for monomer with butanol was examined, but failed to find the trend, because plasma polymerization of monomer produced the new compounds much different from monomers.
Butanol-resistant bacteria were isolated from butanol solvent. The cell growth of isolated strains declined with increasing concentrations of butanol, and isolated strain BRS02 displayed more resistance to 12.5 g/L of butanol than other isolated strains. In addition, strain BRS251, which was resistant to even higher concentrations of butanol, was developed by the mutation of BRS02 using UV. BRS251 could grow in LB medium containing up to 17.5 g/L of butanol, 32.5 g/L of propanol, or 6 g/L of pentanol, whereas the control strain Escherichia coli was found to be tolerant to 7.5 g/L of butanol, 20 g/L of propanol, or 2 g/L of pentanol. The isolated BRS02, a Gram(+) bacterium seen to have a cocci form under the microscope, grew in 6.5% NaCl. According to biochemical tests, BRS02 can metabolize and produce acid with D-galactose, D-maltose, D-mannitol, D-mannose, methyl-${\beta}$-Dglucopyranoside, D-ribose, sucrose, or D-trehalose, as carbon sources. Also, this strain showed resistance to bacitracin, vibriostatic agent O/129, and optochin, alongside positive activities for arginine dihydrolase, ${\alpha}$-glucosidase, and urease. The BRS02 strain was identified as Staphylococcus sp. by analyses of the 16S rRNA gene, phylogenetic tree, and biochemical tests.
The sorption amounts of butanol/water and isopropanol/water solution on the surface modified with FASs (fluoroalkylsilanes) hydrophobic membrane were measured and analyzed using Hansen's solubility parameters. The difference of the solubility parameter of butanol (${\delta}_t=20.4$) and that of the surface modified with FASs hydrophobic membrane (${\delta}_t=16.9$) was greater than the case of isopropanol (${\delta}_t=24.6$), which might explain the result that the sorption amount of butanol was much higher than that of isopropanol. We might also explain the effect of the polar force (${\delta}_p$) on the sorption amount. The difference (${\Delta}$) between FASs polar force (${\delta}_p=4.6$) and butanol polar force (${\delta}_p=6.3$) was much smaller than that between FASs polar force (${\delta}_p=4.6$) and isopropanol polar force (${\delta}_p=9.0$), which meant that the interaction of butanol-FASs was much greater than that of isopropanol-FASs, and resulted in greater sorption amount of butanol on the FASs. This study showed Hansen's solubility parameters might be used for analysis of sorption characteristics of alcohol on membrane and solubility of solute in solvent.
This study was conducted to investigate the functional characteristics of diethylether and butanol extracts from Ganoderma lucidum, Agaricus bisporus and Lentinus edodes. Electron donating abilities of diethylether and butanol extracts from Ganoderma luculum were 95.07% and 97.75%, respectively. Electron donating abilities of butanol extracts from Agaricus bisporus was 94.33%, and that of Lentinus edodes was 96.09%. Antioxidative activities of diethylether and butanol extracts from Canoderma lucidum were higher than those of BHA. All extracts of Agaricus bisporus and Lentinus edodes showed lower antioxidative activity than that of BHA. Nitrite-scavenging abilities of diethylether and butanol extracts from Ganoderma lucidum were 68.34% and 44.44%, respectively. Nitrite-scavenging abilities of butanol extracts from Agaricus bisporus were 43.39%, and those of Lentinus edodes were 68.23%.
Organophilic ZSM-5 membrane was synthesized on the inside of a porous stainless steel support by a hydrothermal secondary growth with seed crystals. They are used to separate n-butanol from its aqueous solution. Pervaporation characteristics such as a permeation flux and a separation factor are investigated as a function of the feed concentration and the operating temperature. The concentration of n-butanol was changed from 0.001 mole fraction to 0.015 mole fraction with an interval of 0.005 mole fraction; the operating temperature was controlled to be 25C, $35^{\circ}C$ and $45^{\circ}C$. When the operating temperature was $45^{\circ}C$, the flux of n-butanol significantly increased from 2 to $27g/m^2/hr$ as the mole fraction of n-butanol in the feed side increased from 0.001 to 0.015. Consequently, the concentration of n-butanol in the permeate substantially increased from 0.0016 to 0.052 mole fraction. When the feed concentration was 0.015, the flux of n-butanol significantly increased from 13 to $27g/m^2/hr$ as the operating temperature increased from $25^{\circ}C$ to $45^{\circ}C$. As a result, the concentration of n-butanol in the permeate also increased from 0.045 to 0.052 mole fraction.
This study focuses on preparation of PVDF/PDMS composite membranes to effectively separate butanol from water-butanol mixture using pervaporation. We prepared various composite membranes by changing PVDF concentration of support layer and PDMS cross-linking condition of active layer. Pervaporation performance was tested by measuring butanol flux and separation factor with various cases of butanol concentration, temperature, and flow rate of feed. As results, performance of our novel PVDF/PDMS membranes surpasses that of PVDF/POMS membrane, manufactured by GKSS (Germany), in term of butanol flux, permeate concentration, and separation factor.
critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the counter ion binding constant (B) in a mixed micellar state of the trimethyltetradecylammonium bromide (TTAB) with the polyoxyethylene (23) lauryl ether (Brij 35) at 25oC in water and in aqueous solutions of butanol isomers were determined as a function of 1 (the overall mole fraction of TTAB) by the use of electric conductivity method and surface tensiometer method. Various thermodynamic parameters (Xi, i, Ci, aiM, and Hmix) were calculated by means of the equations derived from the nonideal mixed micellar model. The results say that the effects of butanol isomers on the micellization of TTAB/Brij 35 mixtures have been in the order of n-butanol>iso-butanol>t-butanol> water.
