  • This study was conducted to identify wood species of 72 wooden parts (pillar, beam, jangyeo, purlin, judu, soro, bracket, deagong, ceiling panel, etc.) used for Daewungjeon Hall in the Woonsoosa Temple, Busan in Korea. Identified wood species were 67 Pinus spp. (Kesiya group), 4 Carpinus spp. and 1 Quercus spp. (Cerris group). In pillars, 14 red pines and 4 Carpinus and in purlins, 4 red pines and 1 Cerris were found. Other elements were red pines. Carpinus woods, which were used for the lower portions of three pillars (Dongbari), seemed repaired parts. A carved wood used for the stand of Buddhist statues was identified as Alnus spp. This study showed that Daewungjeon Hall of the Woonsoosa Temple was made mostly of red pines.

  • Recently, 3D laser scanning technology, which can collect accurate and quick information on phenomena, has been attracting attention among smart construction technologies. 3D laser scanning technology can obtain information most similar to reality at construction sites. In this study, we would like to apply a new member identification method to an actual building and present the possibility of applying point cloud data, which can be collected using 3D laser scanning technology, to measuring progress at construction sites. In order to carry out the research, we collected location information for component identification from BIM, set a recognition margin for the collected location information, and proceeded to identify the components that make up the building from point cloud data. Research results We confirmed that the columns, beams, walls, and slabs that make up a building can be identified from point cloud data. The identification results can be used to confirm all the parts that have been completed in the actual building, and can be used in conjunction with the unit price of each part in the project BOQ for prefabricated calculations. In addition, the point cloud data obtained through research can be used as accurate data for quality control monitoring of construction sites and building maintenance management. The research results can contribute to improving the timeliness and accuracy of construction information used in future project applications.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the species of 117 wooden elements which were used in the Daewungjeon Hall (National Treasure No. 805, constructed in A. D. 1659) of Bukjijangsa Temple, Daegu, Korea. Pillars were identified as 5 red pines (hard pines; most likely, Pinus densiflora S. et Z.), 2 Cerris section of subgenus Lepidobalanus (deciduous oaks) and 3 Tsuga spp. Hwalju columns were 3 Abies spp. and 1 red pine. Head-penetrating ties were 8 red pines and 1 Cerris sp.; Pyeongbang, 3 red pines and 6 Cerris spp. Purlins were identified as 17 red pines, 16 Cerris spp. and 1 Tsuga sp. Angle rafters were 3 red pines and 1 Cerris sp., and end angle rafters, 2 red pines, 1 Zelkova serrata and 1 exotic hard pine. All of brackets (31 woods), jangyeo (4) and deot-chunyeo (2) were identified as red pines. As a whole, red pines (70.1%) and Cerris (22.2%) were major species used in the Daewungjeon Hall of Bukjijangsa Temple. Tsuga, Abies and exotic hard pines seem imported woods used for recent repairs.

  • In this study, a series of forced vibration testing and ambient vibration measurement were performed at a lowrise masonry-infilled reinforced concrete frame structure before and after seismic retrofit and its dynamic properties were extracted using system identification techniques. Also, analytical models which show similar dynamic properties to the measures ones were constructed. The system identification results showed that damping ratios in x direction along which the dampers were installed has been increased. From the comparison between the analytical models, the effective stiffness of post-installed member and post-reinforced members(shear walls and damper frames) were only 50% of gross sectional stiffness of the members, which indicates that the these members were not fully integrated with the existing structure or members. In addition, support condition of post-installed footing has to be pinned in y direction to match the dynamic properties, which is seemingly caused by the change of fixity of the soil due to the installation of new footing.

  • A need for sharing the R&D information at a national level regardless of the ministry in charge of it is being aroused. However, this information is being managed by different institutes under different ministries without a standard identifier which makes it difficult to manage the information such as to look up duplicate projects. A URN-based identifier is required for the integrated management and utilization of the national R&D information. In this paper, the concept of the identification metadata for applying the identification system and the status of the information management by each institute will be the subject for discussion. Based on this, the elements required for issuing a unique identification number and identifier to the national R&D projects will be suggested in this paper.

  • The objective of this study is to conduct the species identification and tree-ring dating for the wood elements of Daesungjeon (main hall) in Jipyeong Hyanggyo, a Confucian shrine in Jije-myeon, Yangpyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do, Korea. Major wood species for Daesung Hall was Pinus densiflora (88%) belonging to hard pine. The other species was P. koraiensis belonging to soft pine. One large beam and one collar beam with bark were dated to A.D. 1718 and 1720, suggesting either a large-scale repair or moving in 1720s as the record of an historical document 'Hakgyodeongrok'.

  • In this study, we identified wood species used in manufacturing Streetcar No. 381 from Seoul Museum of History. This Streetcar No. 381 is an important cultural heritage as one of the 2 streetcars remained in Seoul. It is important to preserve this streetcar through restoration and to maintain without any damage or degradation. The information on species of wood members should be needed for its original restoration. Thus, 6 interior and 1 exterior wood members were sampled and identified microscopically. Among the 7 wood members identified, 2 were found to be douglas-fir ($Pseudotsuga$), 2 lauan ($Shorea$), 1 exotic hard pine of ponderosa group ($Pinus$), 1 larch ($Larix$), and 1 oak of cerris group ($Quercus$), respectively.

  • Characteristics analysis and species identification of post were carried out in four old traditional wooden frame houses in Cheongdo-gun. The diameter and height of post, and distance between posts are related with each other. It was considered that the traditional wooden frame houses were constructed according to the diameter and height of post as a basic dimension in distance between posts. Of the wood member samples obtained in the site, softwoods in three old houses and hardwoods in one old house were separated through light microscopy. The hardwoods were found to be Castanea crenata. and softwoods were all identified as Pinus densiflora.
