Polychaete Feeding Guilds from the Continental Shelf Off the Southeastern Coast of Korea (한국(韓國) 동남해역(東南海域)에 분포(分布)하는 다모류(多毛類)의 식이조합(食餌組合))

  • The feeding guild classification proposed by Fauchald and Jumars (1979) and the relationship between this guild structure and the habitat environment were examined based on the quantitative polycheate samples collected on the continental shelf off the southeastern coast of Korea. Total 12 feeding guilds were found and the major feeding guilds of polychaetes were BSX (burrowing, sessile, non-jawed), SDT (surface deposit feeding, discretely motile, tentaculate), SST (surface deposit feeding, sessile, tentaculate), BMX (burrowing, motile, non-jawed), BMJ (burrowing, motile, jawed), SDJ (surface deposit feeding, discretely motile, jawed). There were more significant associations between feeding guilds and mean grain size (${\phi}$); SST and BMJ showed a positive correlation with mean phi, whereas CDJ (carnivore, discretely motile, jawed) and FDT (filter feeding, discretely motile, tentaculate), a negative value. The CDJ and CMX (carnivore, motile, non-jawed) guilds showed positive correlations with sand content, but only SST guild showed a positive correlation with clay. The heterogeneity of sediment or sorting value (${\phi}$) was highly associated with various feeding strategies of polychaetes. Surface deposit feeders and filter feeders, sessile, and tentaculate strategies were associated with poorly sorted or heterogeneous sediments. Some preliminary polychaete feeding surfaces were posed. Southern and northern coastal region composed of muddy sediment were characterized by SDJ; northern slope of mud by SST; central coast of mud by SDT, BSX; and BMX; southern offshore of sandy sediment by SDJ and IDT (interface feeding, discretely motile, tentaculate).

  • 전국의 농업용 저수지 중 장기간 높은 유기물 및 영양염의 농도로 인해 부영양화가 우려되는 71개 저수지에 대하여 수질오염 및 퇴적물오염 특성을 분석하였다. 수질오염 특성 분석 결과, 평균농도가 COD 11.7 mg/L, TOC 6.8 mg/L, TN 1.844 mg/L, TP 0.101 mg/L, SS 18.1 mg/L, Chl-a 57.3 mg/$m^3$ 로 분석되었다. 조사 대상 저수지 71개 지구 중 COD 46.3 %, TN 84.4 %, Chl-a 63.7 %가 농업용수 수질기준 초과 저수지로 조사되었다. 또한 연구 대상지구의 주요 오염원으로 생활계오염원 31개 저수지의 COD 11.1 mg/L이며, 축산계오염원 40개 저수지의 COD 12.2 mg/L로 나타났다. 각 항목의 수질 결과에 대한 평균 오염도를 분석한 결과, 축산계 오염원이 생활계 오염원 저수지보다 부유물질(SS)을 제외하고 모든 항목에서 오염도가 높게 나타났다. 그러나 TN, TP는 오염원에 따라 크게 차이를 보이지는 않았으며, 축산계 오염원 저수지의 수질 오염도는 모든 항목에서 농업용수 수질기준을 초과하였다. 장기적인 수질오염 저수지에 대하여 퇴적물의 오염 특성을 조사하였으며, 퇴적물오염으로 인한 수질오염 영향관계를 조사 분석하였다. 퇴적물 오염 특성 분석 결과, 강열감량 10.5 %, 총질소 3,480 mg/kg, 총인 1,299 mg/kg으로 오염 수준이 전체적으로 높게 조사되었다. 생활계오염원 31개 저수지의 강열감량 9.8 %, 총질소 2,711 mg/kg, 총인 1,178 mg/kg이며, 축산계오염원 40개 저수지의 강열감량 11.1 %, 총질소 4,076 mg/kg, 총인 1,393 mg/kg로 나타났다. 수질 중 COD, TOC, TN, TP, SS, Chl-a의 오염도와 퇴적물중 강열감량, 총질소, 총인의 각 항목간 상관관계를 분석한 결과, 퇴적물 내 다른 항목에 비해 SS를 제외하고 총인이 모든 수질 항목과 정(+)의 상관관계를 나타내었다. 특히 퇴적물 중 총인과 수질의 TP가 가장 높은 상관성을 나타내는 것으로 조사되었는데, 이는 퇴적물 내 총인이 수질오염에 가장 많은 영향을 줄 수 있으며, 상호작용이 있음을 의미한다고 하겠다. 또한 수질의 TP 오염도에 따라 부영양화 및 조류의 활성화가 크게 영향을 받는다는 기존의 연구결과에 의하면 퇴적물 내 총인의 오염도가 부영양화와 조류 번식에 영향을 크게 미칠 것이라 판단된다.

Late Holocene Sedimentation Rates from Core Sediments of the Western Part of the East Sea, Korea (한국 동해 서측해역에서 채취한 시추 퇴적물의 후기 현세 퇴적률 연구)

  • This study intended to investigate the sedimentation rates of core sediments of the western part of the East Sea using Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (AMS) C-age on the planktonic foraminifera or acid-ex-tracted residue, base-soluble and base-extracted residue fractions. On the basis of the depth-age correlations, the sedimentation rates during the late Holocene period of Cores HP-10, HP-3, 94-9 and 92-3 were 30 cm/kyr, 10 cm/kyr, 11 cm/kyr and 112 cm/kyr, respectively. The sedimentation rates of the westem part of the East Sea, however, seems to be ranged from 11 cm/kyr to 30 cm/kyr, because the rates of the only two cores (Cores HP-10 and 94-9) which were dated at more than three depths are considered to be more reliable. The rates in each core sediment showed good linear relationship with the sample depth, suggesting that the sea-level rise had been finished nearly during the early Holocene period and the general depositional environments had been lasted rather constant during the late Holocene period.

Summer-Time Behaviour and Flux of Suspended Sediments at the Entrance to Semi-Closed Hampyung Bay, Southwestern Coast of Korea (만 입구에서 부유퇴적물 거동과 플럭스: 한반도 서해 남부 함평만의 여름철 특성)

  • Anchored measurements (12.5 hr) of suspended sediment concentration and other hydrodynamic parameters were carried out at two stations located at the entrance to Hampyung Bay in summer (August 1999). Tidal variations in water temperature and salinity were in the range of 26.0-27.9$^{\circ}C$ and 30.9-31.5, respectively, indicating exchange offshore and offshore water mass. Active tidal mixing processes at the entrance appear to destroy the otherwise vertical stratification in temperature and salinity in spite of strong solar heating in summer. On the contrary, suspended sediment concentrations show a marked stratification with increasing concentrations toward bottom layer. Clastic particles in suspended sediments consist mostly of very fine to fine silt (4-16 ${\mu}$m) with a poorly-sorted value of 14.7-25.9 ${\mu}$m. However, at slack time with less turbulent energy, flocs larger than 40 ${\mu}$m are formed by cohesion and inter-collision of particles, resulting in a higher settling velocity. Strong ebb-dominated and weak flood dominated tidal currents, in the southwestern and the northeastern part, respectively, result in a seaward residual flow of -10${\sim}$-20 cm $s^{-1}$ at station H1 and a bayward residual flow less than 5.0 cm $s^{-1}$ at station H2. However, mean concentration of suspended sediments at station H1 is higher at flood (95.0-144.1 mg $1^{-1}$) than in ebb (75.8-120.9 mg $1^{-1}$). On the contrary, at the station H2, the trend is reversed with higher concentration at the ebb (84.7-158.4 mg $1^{-1}$) than that at the flood (53.0-107.9 mg $1^{-1}$). As a result, seaward net suspended sediment fluxes ($f_{s}$) are calculated to be -1.7 ${\sim}$-$15.610^{3}$ kg $m^{-2}$ $s^{-1}$ through the whole water column. However, the stations H1 and H2 show definitely different values of the flux with higher ones in the former than in the latter. Alternatively, depth-integrated net suspended sediment loads ($\c{Q}_{s}$) for one tidal cycle are also toward the offshore with ranges of 0.37${\times}$$10^{3}$ kg $m^{-1}$ and 0.21${\times}$$10^{3}$ kg $m^{-1}$, at station H1 and H2, respectively. This seaward transport of suspended sediment in summer suggests that summer-time erosion in the Hampyung muddy tidal flats is a rather exceptional phenomenon compared to the general deposition reported for many other tidal flats on the west coast of Korea.

Analysis of Sediment Transport in the Gaeya Open Channel by Complex Wave Field (복합 파랑장에 따른 개야수로 퇴적물이동 분석)

  • In order to analyze wave propagation, tidal current, and sediment transport in the vicinity of the Gaeya open channel, it was classified into before(CASE1W) and after(CASE2W) installation of various artificial structures, and the calculation results for CASE1W and CASE2W were compared. For wave propagation, the results of incident and reflected waves were derived using the SWAN numerical model, and the tidal current velocity results were derived using the FLOW2DH numerical model for tidal current. The results of the SWAN numerical model and the FLOW2DH numerical model became the input conditions for the SEDTRAN numerical model that predicts sediment transport, and the maximum bed shear stress and suspended sediment concentration distribution near the Gaeya open channel were calculated through the SEDTRAN numerical model. As a result of the calculation of the SWAN numerical model, the wave height of CASE2W was increased by 40~50 % compared to CASE1W because the incident wave was diffracted and superimposed and the reflected wave was generated by about 7 km long northen jetty. As a result of the calculation of the FLOW2DH numerical model, According to the northen breakwater, the northen jetty and Geumrando, CASE2W was calculated 10~30 % faster than CASE1W in the tidal current of the Gaeya open channel. As a result of the calculation of the SEDTRAN numerical model, the section where the maximum bed shear stress is 1.0 N/m2 or more and the suspended concentration is 80mg/L or more was widely distributed in the Gaeya open channel from the marine environment by the complex wave field(incident wave, reflected wave and tidal wave) and the installation of various artificial structures. it is believed that a sedimentation phenomenon occurred in the Gaeya open channel.

Benthic Foraminiferal Assemblage and Sedimentary Environment of Core Sediments from the Northern Shelf of the East China Sea (북동중국해 대륙붕 코아 퇴적물의 저서유공충 군집 특성과 퇴적환경 연구)

  • Benthic foraminiferal assemblage and AMS radiocarbon dating of core sediments from the northern shelf of the East China Sea were analyzed in order to understand the paleoenvironment and sedimentary environmental changes around the Korean marginal seas since the last glacial maximum (LGM). The core sediments, containing continuous records of the last 16,000 years, reveal a series of well-defined vertical changes in number of species (S), P/T ratio and species diversity (H) as well as foraminiferal assemblage. Such down-core variations display a sharp change at a core depth of approximately 240 cm, which corresponds to ca. 10,000 year B.P. The sediments of the lower part of the core (240${\sim}$560 cm, Zone I), including the well-developed tide-influenced sedimentary structures, are characterized by high abundances of Ammonia beccarii and Elphidium clavatum (s.l.) and low values in number of species, P/T ratio and diversity. These tide-influenced signatures and foraminiferal assemblage characters suggest that the sediments of Zone I were deposited in a coastal environment (water depths of 20${\sim}$30 m) such as tidal estuary with an influence of the paleo-rivers (e.g., old-Huanghe and Yangtze rivers) during the early phase of the sea-level rise (ca. 16,000 to 10,000 years) since the LGM. In contrast, the upper core sediments (0${\sim}$240 cm, Zone II) are characterized by abundant Eilohedra nipponica and Bolivina robusta with a minor contribution of A. ketienziensis angulata and B. marginata. and high values in number of species, P/T ratio and diversity. Based on relative abundance of these assemblage, Zone II can be divided into two subzones (IIa and IIb). Zone IIa is interpreted to be deposited under the inner-to-middle shelf environment during the marine transgression in the early Holocene (after ca. 9,000 yr B.P.) when sea level rapidly increased. The sediments of zone IIb most likely deposited after 6,000 yr B.P. under the outer shelf environment (80${\sim}$100 m water depth), which is similar to modem depositional environments. The muddy sediments of zone IIb were probably transported from the old-Huanghe and Yangtze Rivers during the late Holocene. We suggest that the present-day oceanographic conditions over the Yellow and the East China Seas have been established after ca. 7,000${\sim}$6,000 yr B.P. when the Kuroshio Current began to influence this area.

High-Resolution Seismic Characteristics of the Holocene Mud Deposits in the Southeast Innershelf, Korea (한국 남동 내대륙붕해역의 홀로세 뻘질 퇴적층의 고해상도 탄성파 특성)

  • The Holocene mud deposits in the southeastern innershelf of the Korean Peninsula were studied using the shallow seismic reflection profiles coupled with sediment sampling. The Holocene mud deposits are developed as a belt in the innershelf area from the mouth of the Nakdong River to off Pohang along the coastline. The surficial sediments in the study area gradually become finer and well sorted from south to north. The seismic facies in the Holocene sequence change northward from parallel reflectors in the mouth of the Nakdong River and northeastward prograding reflectors in the southern part off Ulsan to transparent layer in the nearshore off Ulsan to Pohang. The regional difference of seismic facies indicates that the Holocene sediment characters are varied with localities. By combining the surficial sediments properties with seismic facies patterns, the suspended sediments mostly supplied from the Nakdong River may be transported northward along the shore by the north-flowing Tsushima warm current. The Holocene mud sequence overlying the ravinement surface which is produced by erosion of underlying sediments during a rapid transgression can be interpreted as the highstand system tracts probably formed during the highstand of sea level similar to the present-day sea level.

  • 하천공사의 매립 및 준설 시 뿐만 아니라 최근에는 호우 시에도 발생하는 고농도 오탁수의 유출 확산으로 인하여 주변 수역의 수산자원 및 자연환경에 심각한 영향을 미치고 있다. 특히 유사는 하천과 호소에 유입되어 탁도를 증가시켜 수자원의 이용가치를 저하시키며, 박테리아나 각종 미생물의 이동 매개체가 되고 있다. 또한 퇴적된 유사는 유량이 증가하면 다시 침식되어 부유상태가 되며 이때에 영양염류나 독성물질이 재용출 되기도 하는 등 하천의 물리 및 토양환경의 장 단기적인 변화를 유발하는 원인이 된다. 결국 유사는 다양한 방식으로 하천과 호소의 생태환경에 큰 변화를 초래한다. 부유토사의 발생 가능한 피해의 범위와 정도는 유역의 부유토사 발생율과 하천, 호소 퇴적물의 성분종류와 입도분포, 그리고 유속에 따라 결정된다. 따라서 탁수의 영향범위를 예측하고, 악영향이 예측될 경우에는 탁도를 저하시킬 수 있는 오탁물질의 저하기법을 적용하여 그 대책을 수립하여야 한다. 현재 정부가 역점을 두고 있는 4대강 살리기 사업 중 하나인 하천 준설 사업 시 발생되는 고농도 오탁수는 주변 수역의 수자원 및 자연환경에 심각한 영향을 미치므로 자연환경의 보존, 해양자원을 보호하기 위하여 오탁물질의 제어가 반드시 필요한 실정이다. 기존의 오탁 저감시설이나 방법의 경우 오탁물질의 확산을 제어하는데 한계가 있고 오탁물질의 종류와 관계없이 일률적으로 시공함으로서 오탁제어 효과가 의문 시 되고 있다. 이러한 문제점을 개선하기 위하여 오탁물질의 확산 범위를 줄이고 침강효율을 높이는 방법을 찾아 오탁확산 제어 효율을 개선할 필요가 있다. 본 연구에서는 오탁물질 제어 시 2차 응집물로 인한 오염이 발생하는 않는 천연광물 제올라이트를 이용한 실내실험을 통하여 고농도 탁수의 탁도 저감효율을 파악하여 고농도 탁수의 탁도 저감에 대한 제올라이트의 적용 가능성을 살펴보았다. 4대강 살리기 사업 중인 OO강 OO공구의 OO보 현장에서 하천 준설 시 발생하는 고농도 탁수를 이온을 첨가한 제올라이트를 이용하여 확산제어에 관한 효과를 검토한 결과 2,000NTU 정도의 고농도로 유하하는 탁수에 대하여 제올라이트 혼합 후 20분이 경과한 시점에 제거효율이 90%이상으로 제올라이트의 탁수저감 효과가 대단히 크다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

Suspended Particulate Matter of the Surface Water in Relation to the Hydrography in the South Sea of Korea in Early Winter (한국 남해의 초겨울 해황과 관련한 표층 부유물질의 분포)

  • In order to investigate the distribution of suspended particulate matter of the surface water in the South Sea of Korea in early winter, the cruise results during 2 to 8 December 2004 were analyzed in relation to the hydrography. The front was formed along the line connecting between Tsushima and Cheju Islands, which divided the water into two water masses; the coastal water with for temperature and for salinity, and the Tsushima Warm Current Water with high temperature and high salinity. In the coastal water the suspended particulte matter was 5.0-6.5 mg/l, while in the oceanic water suspended particulate matter was 4.5-5.0 mg/l. The coastal water showed higher mixing effects, compared to the oceanic area where vertical stratification was clearly formed. These indicate that the distribution of suspended particulate matter was affected by the stratification or mixing of the water column. Also it is suggested that the mixing effects of sea surface cooling and rind play an important role on the distribution of suspended particulate matter in the South Sea of Korea in winter time.
