Application of Macrocell Sensor System for Monitoring of Steel Corrosion in Concrete Structure Exposed to Marine Environment (해양 콘크리트구조물의 철근부식 모니터링을 위한 매크로셀 센서 시스템의 적용)

  • Corrosion of steel embedded in concrete is one of the foremost factors that affect the durability of concrete structures in marine environments. This paper presents an application technique of anode-ladder-system to evaluate corrosion behaviours of marine concrete structure. In order to investigate the behaviours quantitatively, the measurement of potential and current was performed on the concrete elements subjected to the penetration and diffusion of chloride ions. The main variable was the heights from seawater level; namely 3.7, 6.0 and 8.2 m. As a result of the monitoring, it was found that the corrosion characteristics differently behaved with the increasing height. Additionally, through migration test, the relationship between compressive strength of concrete and diffusivity of chloride ions was observed. It is suggested, ultimately, that in order to reduce or mitigate steel corrosion, both appropriate concrete cover depth and high-quality of concrete in early ages should be done.

Evaluation of the Corrosion Behavior of the Aluminum Cladding in the KMRR Fuel (KMRR 핵연료 알루미늄 피복재의 부식 거동 평가)

  • For the evaluation of the corrosion behavior of the aluminum cladding in the KMRR(Korea Multipurpose Research Reactor) fuel, a modified Griess correlation was derived by introducing a heat flux factor derived from the comparison of the measured in-reactor corrosion data with the prediction of the Griess correlation. As a design criterion on the corrosion to maintain the KMRR fuel integrity, prevention of the oxide spallation was conservatively selected, which is conservatively assumed to occur when the temperature difference across the oxide layer exceeds 114$^{\circ}C$. A bounding power history of the KMRR fuel was determined by examining all the power histories of the KMRR fuel from cycle 1 to equilibrium cycle, and used to predict the maximum possible corrosion. Results of the corrosion prediction of the KMRR fuel with the bounding power history showed that the maximum local thickness of the oxide layer would be below 50$\mu$m and the design criterion on the oxide spallation would be satisfied with a factor of two margin. Therefore, it can be said that corrosion of the cladding will not impair the integrity of the KMRR fuel. Nevertheless, the applicability of the modified Griess correlation to the KMRR needs to be further verified through the KMRR fuel corrosion surveillance.

A Study on the Durability of Manure Composting Facilities (축분 퇴비화 시설 내구성에 관한 조사연구)

  • Manure compost is a main product from animal wastes in Korea. Solid manure is usually treated by aerobic composting at manure composting facilities for land reinforcement. Agricultural use of manure compost as organic fertilizer resources, mainly manure compost, is now recommended in Korea. This study investigated the evaluation of durability about the manure composting machinery and structures which was controlled by aeration and periodic agitating. The questionnaire addressed three main topics as follows: operating practices, machinery and maintenance of the manure composting facilities are being operated. A total of the 22 manure composting facilities in an agricultural cooperative were surveyed. The results obtained in this survey were summarized as follow: The major causes of manure composting apparatus trouble were corrosion and wear, overloading and foreign matter etc. The highly trouble frequency of the agitator, packer and conveyor were chain, agitating blade and shaft, motor and screw vane, respectively. These analytical results can be used as basic information to establish the maintenance control methods and durability standard of manure composting facility.

  • In this paper, a number of anode and reference electrodes that are installed around the target anti-corrosion objects to monitor, appropriate to your situation of a fixed potential and polarization methods can be applied automatically in the system was developed. In particular, this system was configured with a remote electric anti-corrosion automatic control device that have automatically adjust function to uniformal anti-corrosion in all parts of target objects, a corrosion monitoring device to perform the function of corrosion potential detection and a web-based operating program to perform the function of real-time monitoring, control and prediction. Using this system, by preventing oxidative corrosion phenomena can maximize the life of the target anti-corrosion objects.

  • The objective of this study is to propose a method to prevent the possible stress corrosion cracking of a horizontal side-wall sprinkler head deflector in the same atmosphere of ammonia gas as it regulated in the UL (Underwriters Laboratory). A corrosion test is carried out for three types of specimen according to post-forming treatment, one of which is annealing, another sand blasting and the other no treatment. The observation of the test specimens with a metal micro-scope says that the tensile residual stress is a major factor causing corrosion cracking, and that a proper heat treatment can remove or reduce the residial stress and prevent a crack from occurring even in a severe corrosive atmosphers.

  • 본 연구에서는 고분자 전해질 연료전지용 금속분리판의 전기화학적 부식을 방지하기 위한 금속 첨가 DLC(Diamond-like-carbon) 표면처리 방법을 개발하였으며, stainless steel 304를 모재로 하여 텅스텐 첨가 DLC, 티타늄 첨가 DLC, 몰리브덴 첨가 DLC 금속분리판을 제작하였다. 제작된 금속분리판을 이용하여 내구성 평가,전기화학적 부식 특성, 성능평가 및 접촉저항 특성 등을 평가하였다. 전기화학적 부식특성의 경우 각각의 분리판에 대해 6.69, 1.2, 1.0 ${\mu}A/cm^2$로 모재인 STS 304의 25 ${\mu}A/cm^2$의 부식전류밀도에 비해 우수한 부식특성을 보였다. 또한 초기 성능에서 몰리브덴 첨가 DLC 분리판의 경우 300 mA/$cm^2$에서 0.757 V로 측정되었으며, 이는 graphite 분리판 측정 결과인 0.758 V와 유사한 성능을 보였다. 또한 내구성 평가에서 초기 성능 대비 성능 감소율이 10% 감소하는데 소요된 시간은 graphite 분리판의 경우 2,000시간으로 나타났으며, 몰리브덴 첨가 DLC 분리판의 경우 1,700시간으로 측정되었다. 1,500시간 까지의 성능 감소율은 grphite,텅스텐 첨가DLC,티타늄 첨가DLC, 몰리브덴 첨가 DLC 분리판 순으로 각각에 대해 37.7, 60.3, 92.8, 45.7 ${\mu}V$/hr로 나타났다.

Ultimate Strength Based Reliability of Corroded Ship Hulls (부식을 고려한 선각거더의 최종강도 신뢰성)

  • Aging ships can suffer structural damage due to corrosion, fatigue crack etc., and possibility of catastrophic failure of seriously damaged ships is very high. To reduce the risk of loss of ships due to hull collapse, it is essential to evaluate ultimate hull strength of aging ships taking into account various uncertainties associated with structural damages. In this paper, ultimate strength-based reliability analysis of ship structures considering wear of structural members due to corrosion is described. A corrosion rate estimate model for structural members is introduced. An ultimate limit state function of a ship hull is formulated taking into account corrosion effects. The model is applied to an existing oil tanker, and reliability index associated with hull collapse is calculated by using the second-order reliability method (SORM). Discussions on structure safety of corroded ships are made.

Cavitation Erosion-Corrosion Characteristics in Seawater of Heat-Treated Electroless Nickel Plating Layer (열처리된 무전해 니켈도금 층의 해수 내 캐비테이션 침식-부식 손상 특성)

  • 무전해 니켈도금 층은 마모, 마찰, 스크래치, tribology 등에 대한 내구성뿐만 아니라 내식성도 우수하여 산업현장에서 널리 적용되고 있다. 일반적으로 무전해 니켈도금 층의 내구성은 경도 값과 직접적인 상관관계를 가지며, 그 값은 약 $400-500H_V$ 정도이다. 이러한 무전해 도금 층에 대하여 약 $400^{\circ}C$에서 1시간 정도 열처리를 실시하면 경도 값은 약 $800-1000H_V$ 정도로 현저히 증가되고 내구성 역시 크게 향상시킬 수 있다. 그러나 해양환경에서 발생되는 캐비테이션 침식 부식에 대한 무전해 니켈도금 층의 열처리에 관한 연구는 거의 전무한 상태이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 회주철의 캐비테이션 침식 부식을 방지하기 위해 무전해 니켈도금 후 다양한 온도와 시간으로 열처리를 실시하여 도금 층의 캐비테이션 침식 부식 특성을 평가하고자 하였다. 무전해 니켈코팅을 위한 모재는 회주철(FC250)을 $19.5mm{\times}19.5mm{\times}5mm$의 크기로 가공하였다. 도금조로 500mL 비커를 사용하였으며, 모든 시험편은 2시간 동안 무전해 니켈도금을 실시하였다. 그리고 캐비테이션 실험은 ASTM G32 규정에 의거하여 천연해수 내 $30^{\circ}C$에서 $50{\mu}m$의 진폭으로 실시하였다. 그 결과 열처리 적용 시 EN 도금의 표면경도가 현저히 증가하여 캐비테이션 침식 부식 저항성이 상당히 개선되었다.

  • Cause analysis of surface pitting crack on a waterjet impeller was conducted. The waterjet impeller was made from stainless steel duplex 2205, which is more resistant to corrosion and local corrosion than typical stainless steel 316L and 317L, and has high mechanical strength, making it a useful material in various marine structures and seawater desalination facilities. The measurements were taken by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and molecular ecological detection. The chemical composition of S was examined by SEM in the area of pitting corrosion. The dsrAB gene was detected on the sample of the pitting corrosion of the impeller through molecular ecological detection. Therefore, pitting corrosion on the surface of a waterjet impeller was caused by sulphite-reducing bacteria (SRB). To prevent the spread of SRB, management is required through high temperature treatments (over 65℃), pH management, or the insulation of a hull and waterjet.

A Study on physicochemical and calcination processed characteristic of oyster shell (굴패각의 물리화학적 특성 및 소성가공 특성에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we secured wasted oyster shells as raw materials in order to applicate it to corrosion preventive ceramic coating reagent in the drinking water pipeline. Then, we investigated physicochemical properties in terms of basic calcination processing. Oyster shell was composed with 92.08% of $CaCO_3$ and the shapes of the pulverized particles were mostly oval. The calcined oyster shell showed increasing tendency of weight loss and of calcium content with the lapse of time and increase of temperature. The result indicates that the higher calcination processing temperature and the uniformly smaller particle size give more efficiency during calcination process. Therefore it is anticipated to be a good ceramic material to protect a surface of cleaning bed and inside of a tap water pipes from corrosion.
