  • Recently, PCCI (premixed charge compression ignition) combustion is studied to reduce both NOx and PM because of homogeneous mixture formation and lower combustion temperature. It has also merit of increasing thermal efficiency owing to better air-fuel mixure. However, it is well known that PCCI combustion has a weakness in fuel economy because PCCI combustion tends to start before TDC. Therefore, it is necessary to find an optimal conditions for PCCI combustion which maintains reduction of NOx, PM and increase of thermal efficiency. In this study, pPCCI combustion was realized by adding early injection strategy to a conventional diesel engine. In addition, the characteristics of pPCCI combustion was analized by comparing conventional diesel injection strategy. The results show that NOx and PM per power in pPCCI combution were reduced compared to a conventional diesel combustion.

  • This work investigated the effects of engine speed and injection timing on combustion and emissions characteristics in a partially premixed charge compression ignition (pPCCI) engine fueled with DME. pPCCI engine especially has potential to achieve more homogeneous mixture in the cylinder, which results in lower NOx and smoke emission. In this study single cylinder engine was equipped with common rail and injection pressure is 700 bar. Total injected fuel mass is 64.5 $mm^3$ per cycle. The amount of pilot injection of the entire injection 12.5% is tested. Results show that NOx emission is decreased while IMEP is increased as the retard of injection timing. Besides, NOx emissions are slightly rised as well as IMEP is increased with the increase of engine speed.

  • The present study is focused on the subgrid scale combustion model in context with a Large Eddy Simulation. In order to deal with detailed chemical kinetic, the level-set method based on a flamelet model is addressed. In this model, the flame front is treated as an interface, represented by an iso-surface of a scalar field G. This iso-surface is convected by the velocity field and its filtered quantities are include the turbulent burning velocity, which is to be modelled. For modelling the turbulent burning velocity, an equation for the length-scale of the sub-filter flame front fluctuations was developed. The formulations and issues for the turbulent premixed and partially premixed flames are addressed in detail.

  • The opposed flow flame in a mesoscale channel was constructed to observe the flame stabilization behaviors at low strain rate conditions (<$10s^{-1}$). The purpose of this study is to get the overall flame behaviors of partially premixed flames with oxygen enhanced conditions at low strain rates. The oxygen ratio in oxidizer was changed from 18 to 30 %. Conclusively, the flame extinction limit approached to about $1s^{-1}$, and divided into three representative regimes corresponding to self propagating flame, transitional flame, quenching flame regimes.

  • Diesel engines exhaust much more NOx(Nitrogen Oxides) and PM(Particulate Matter) than gasoline engines, and it is not easy to reduce both NOx and PM simultaneously because of the trade-off relation between two components. This study investigated flame characteristics of the partial premixed compression ignition known as new combustion method which can reduce NOx and PM simultaneously. The investigation was performed through the analysis of the flame images taken by a high speed camera from the visible engine which is the modified single cylinder diesel engine. The results obtained through this investigation are summarized as follows; (1) The area of the luminous yellow flame was reduced due to the decrease of flame temperature and even distribution of temperature. (2) The darkish yellow flame zone caused by the shortage of the remaining oxygen after the middle stage of combustion was considerably reduced. (3) Since the ignition delay was shortened, the violent combustion did not occur and the combustion duration became shortened.

  • The effects of co-flow and the variation of the equivalence ratio on NOx emission were investigated experimentally for unconfined and confined partially premixed flames. The shape, length, temperature of flames and the concentration of burnt gas were measured. Two types of co-flow (parallel and swirling co-flow) were considered. For unconfined flames, flame with parallel co-flow is the longest and the next is flame without co-flow. Flame with swirl is the shortest. The length of swirling flame increases suddenly under certain value of equivalence ratio. EINOx is diminished by the decrease of equivalence ratio. It is found that the unconfining of flame enhances the emission of NOx. The EINOx of unconfined flame with parallel co-flow is less than that of flame without co-flow.

  • Radiation effects on the partially premixed methane flames diluted with water vapor in the air stream were numerically investigated. OPPDIF code and GRI-v3.0 were used in the numerical simulation. Adiabatic condition was compared with two different radiation models, optically-thin and WSGGM models. It was found that the radiation effect on the flame structure for the equivalence ratio (${\Phi}$) of 2.5 was less than ${\Phi}=1.5$. Extinction limit was not affected significantly, however, local flame structure was markedly influenced by the radiation models as increasing the water vapor concentration.

  • Flame characteristics in a double concentric burner has been studied experimentally. Air is supplied through a central nozzle, methane/air premixture is supplied in a inner annular part, and coflowing shield air is supplied to minimize outside disturbances. Depending on flow rate and concentration, various flame shapes can be observed. As the flow rate difference between central air jet and annular premixed jet is varied, several distinctive flames are observed. Conditions of partially premixed flames are further investigated; nozzle attached rich premixed flame, inner lifted flame, and outer lifted flame. Using the Abel transformation of digitized images of flames, cross- sectional images of flames can be obtained, from which overall structure of flames can be identified. PLIF measurement of OR radical was also conducted. OR radicals were mainly distributed in diffusion flame region. From the difference of OR distribution between nozzle attached and lifted flames, similarity of OR distribution between tribrachial flame and lifted flames in this study are observed.

  • In this study, the influence of changing combustor pressure on nitric oxide emission was investigated. Expansion of reaction region was more clear in the P$^{*}$ <1 conditions compared to the P$^{*}\geq1$ conditions, and it could be observed that flames are distinct in the P$^{*}\geq1$ conditions and that brightness is relative low and wide distribution is shown in the P$^{*}$ <1 conditions. In the respect of temperature distribution, narrow and high-temperature region was shown in the P$^{*}\geq1$ conditions. On the other hands, overall uniform temperature distributions were shown in the P$^{*}$ <1 conditions. Nitric oxide emission decreased with decreasing combustor pressure. This tendency was explained by the mean flame temperature distribution. Low NOx combustion is ascribed to wide-spread reaction region in the low combustor Pressure and oscillation were shown P$^{*}\leq0.97$, and strength and sizes of oscillation were more increased with lower pressure index. These results demonstrate that flame shape and nitric oxide emission can be controlled with changing combustor pressure.

  • An experimental study was conducted for three different fuels($CH_4$, $C_2H_4$ and $C_3H_8$) to investigate the combustion characteristics and the local reaction intensity with combustor pressure(-30kpa~30kpa). Regardless of fuel composition, EINOx decreased with reducing pressure decreased. Structure and combustion characteristics were also largely affected by the combustor pressure. In addition, reaction intensity in terms of the changing combustor pressure and equivalence ratio was investigated. Combustion reaction in higher than atmospheric pressure was very active than the lower combustor pressure. When the combustor pressure is lower than the atmospheric pressure, the overall reactivity is noticeably enhanced due to the elevated diffusion process of unburned mixture. It was found that the combustion characteristics of the methane and propane flames are considerably influenced by the pressure while those of ethylene flame are less sensitive to the combustor pressure.
