  • The purpose of this research is to compare housing wealth effects of home-owning single income couples (SIC) and dual income couples (DIC) on their non-durable consumption and to assess the effects by location, age groups, housing structure type, debt-to-asset ratio and employment status. Using the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) of 2014, this empirical study identified 1,198 SIC households and 1,044 DIC households, and employed multiple regression analysis. The main results reveal that the difference of financial portfolios between SIC and DIC households was little but housing wealth effects were stronger among SIC households than DIC counterpart. It's evident that housing wealth effects were conspicuous for SIC and DIC households who were headed by wage earners aged over 40s, and resided in apartment outside the Seoul Metropolitan Area. However, household debt became a determinant in contradicting housing wealth effects of SIC and DIC households. While the household financial dimension was in proportion to income, DIC households didn't gain much financial security due to increasing expenditure. Further, this research imply that liquidity constraints explicitly posed a more serious threat to SIC households whose dependence on housing asset is larger than their counterpart.

  • This study attempts to find out more efficient way of improving the housing conditions, by reviewing the existing improvement programs for the traditional rural housing and by aiming at finding advantages to inherit and correcting the inconvenience of the traditional forms of housing, through a survey on the housing conditions of the aged living alone and living with spouse only in the traditional rural housing. Research result shows that the openness and buffering zone of the traditional rural housing are relevant housing elements which provide the aged appropriate living space and therefore should be actively inherited and that the existing improvement programs have been largely inappropriate. But as the aged can hardly practice the appropriate way of improvement on their own, government policy consideration is urgently needed as part of the welfare policy for the aged.

  • This study aims to examine how newly married couple's financial position influence the decision of divorce by using data from the Korea Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS). In particular, we closely examine the period between marriage and divorce for the households married since 2000. As a measure of household financial position, we focus on hosing debts because it can be considered as one of the most important factors for newly married couples. The key findings are as follows. First of all, age for marriage, age gaps between husband and wife and education level have a vital influence on the decision of divorce. In addition, in general, the household debts have decisive and negative effects on the future divorce decision. Especially, not only high absolute amount of debt but also high relative debt to household total income bring about a decision of divorce. The findings of this study suggest that systematic debt relief policies for newly married couples would be needed to build healthy family.

  • This study aims to explore health behavior profiles and the association between the derived profiles and living arrangement among middle-aged and older adults. Using data from wave 6 (2016) of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging, latent profile analyses were applied to identify patterns of health behaviors and multinomial logistic regression models were conducted to predict profile membership using living arrangement (i.e., living alone, living with spouse only, living with family members) and sociodemographic characteristics. A sample of 7,048 respondents aged 55 and older were included in the study. Results revealed that Korean middle-aged and older adults can be grouped into four health behavior profiles: "High health-compromising" (4%), "Moderate health-compromising" (28%), "Low health-compromising" (65%), and "High physical activity" (3%). Also, living arrangement showed significant profile differences. Compared to the respondents living alone, those living with spouse only were more likely to belong to low and moderate levels of health-compromising behavior profiles than the "High physicial activity profile". Respondents living with family members were more likely to belong to the "High health-compromising profile" than the "High physical activity profile" compared to those living with spouse only. These findings indicate that living arrangement needs to be taken into consideration when developing health promoting programs and supports. Moreover, policy interventions suiting the needs of various sociodemographic subgroups are recommended.
