Terminal bud removal has been thought as a useful practical management of soybean cultivation in Korea, and such cultivating method has been recommended till recent times. Many experiments about the effect of bud removal have been made, but it is not certain yet. This study was conducted to determine if source potential and seed yield would be affected by bud removal in 4 determinate soybean varieties. Terminal bud was removed by hand at the 5 trifoliolate stage of growth. Data were collected on leaf area and leaf dry matter weight from 58 to 101 DAP by nearly every 10 days and some agronomic characteristics and seed yield after maturity. Removing the apical bud did not increased leaf area and leaf dry matter. Number of modes and pods per a plant was increased by bud removal, but number of seeds per a pod was decreased, and seed yield was unchanged by such offsets. From the data, we concluded the source potential of soybean plants was not increased by terminal bud removal under the planting density, 22,000 pit/l0a, however it would be a useful way to reduce the lodging or over-growth.

This study was conducted to investigate the growth characteristics of cucumber scion and pumpkin rootstock under different levels of light intensity (photosynthetic photon flux, PPF) and plug cell size in a closed transplant production system with artificial lighting. Cucumber scion and pumpkin rootstock seedlings were grown under the combinations of three levels of PPF (PPF 165, 248, and $313{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) and five types of plug tray (50, 72, 105, 128, and 200 cells in the tray) for nine days. The shoot dry weight and relative growth rate increased with increasing PPF and plug cell size. As PPF increased, cucumber scion and pumpkin rootstock seedlings had higher dry matter, lower specific leaf area, and lower hypocotyl length. The first true leaf of cucumber scion and pumpkin rootstock unfolded at eight and seven days after sowing, respectively, except the treatment using 200-cell plug tray. The unfolding of first true leaf of seedlings grown in 200-cell plug tray was delayed by one day. Accordingly, it was considered that the use of small cell size such as 200-cell plug tray would require more time for the production of scion and rootstock. Based on the results, we suggest that cucumber scion and pumpkin rootstock be grown in 105-cell to 128-cell plug tray for eight days and 72-cell to 105-cell plug tray for seven days, respectively, when using splice grafting method with root-removed rootstock. Additionally, higher PPF is suggested to improve the growth and quality of scion and rootstock.
Despite the fact that understanding customers satisfaction with transportation services is a subject of great importance, authors, so far, found no systematic researches referred to that issue. From this point, studying the satisfaction with subways services can be extremely useful. Empirical study of key factors in the satisfaction with subway services is the departure point, which holds as objectives, and we believe, will contribute to overall increasing in the number of subways services used and in the amount of public benefits derived from that usage. In order to achieve these goals: First, several items referred to some key factors in the satisfaction of subway usage were systemized. Second, a research of specific weights attached to those key factors by subway passengers was conducted. Knowledge of the satisfaction variables system can provide deep insights into ones perceptual experience when using a subway. The results were as follows: Various interrelated factors compose a passengers satisfaction with subway services. People do not just use subway passively; a number of key factors, like physical and personal services, exact timing, easiness to access etc. determine the passengers satisfaction with subway. In order to find out specific weights of these key factors multiple regression analysis was employed. Results showed that satisfaction with subway is determined by (in order of importance) easiness to access, quality of physical services, friendliness of working stuff and timing exactness. According to the findings, passengers do not use subway as a simple mean of transportation, rather they perceive it as a complex combination of environmental elements and overall satisfaction depends on these various factors. Therefore, to learn passengers satisfaction with subways services, passengers subway experience must be thoroughly studied and analyzed, and this is where papers value resides.
Soil crusting and hardening as a result of drying after rainfall were examined in relation to seedling emergence by employing five rice varieties (Italiconaverneco, Dadazo, and Galsaekggarakshare, Dongjinbyeo and Sumjinbyeo) and two barnyardgrass species (E. crus-gallj var. oryzjcola and E. crus-galli var. praticola). Sandy loam, loam, and silty loam soils were used. The artificial rainfall of 0, 20 and 40mm were applied after sowing and covering with 4cm soil. Air temperature and solar radiation averaged over 9 days after seeding was 31.3$^{\circ}C$ and 16.9MJ /m$^2$, respectively. Soil strength increased rapidly by drying after artificial rainfall, being greater in soils with greater amount of clay and artificial rainfall. Soil crust was formed on the surface with artificial rainfall in all soils tested. However, soil crust was exfoliated in silty loam and loam soil, and lifted as seedlings emerge. Seedling emergence of rice varieties was decreased by rainfall treatments. Sumjinbyeo and Dongjinbyeo showed much poorer seedling emergence especially in sandy loam soil than the other varieties. Poor seedling emergence of these varieties might have been caused by delayed seedling emergence which had made them expose to greater soil strength. Seedling emergence of barnyardgrasses showed no differences among soil textures and rainfall treatments, because they emerged rapidly before soil crusting and hardening were proceeded enough to hamper seedling emergence. Seedling emergence of Sumjinbyeo and Dongjinbyeo decreased with increasing soil strength averaged over 3 days to 5 days after seeding, being lowered to 80% at soil strength of 1.0kg/cm$^2$ and to 50% at 1.7kg/cm$^2$. Emergence speed of barnyardgrasses was faster than rice varieties, and E. crus-galli var. oryzjcola than E. crus-galli var. praticola. Italiconaverneco and Dadazo showed faster emergence in rice varieties. Galsaekggarakshare showed slower emergence speed than these two varieties with similar seedling emergence percentage. The greater and faster elongations of mesocotyl and incomplete leaf in rice, and of mesocotyl in barnyardgrass were the characteristics responsible for higher seedling emergence rate in the environment examined.
Investigated were the relationships between plumule elongation characteristics and seedling emergence of 46 varieties including native, improved and red rice varieties of Korea, and varieties from U.S.A., Italy, India, Japan under 1, 3, and 5cm deep sowing with irrigated and non-irrigated condition. Experiments were carried out in paddy field of sandy loam. There was heavy shower of 19.2mm on the next day of seeding and thereafter, clear and dry weather continued during the experiment period. Soil temperature averaged over 30 days after seeding was $16.4^{\circ}C$ at 3cm depth. Soil hardness increased linearly up to 2.5kg /$cm^2$ on the 14th day after seeding, on which date irrigated plot was irrigated through furrow, and up to 4kg / $cm^2$ on the 28th day in non-irrigated plot. Soil hardness dropped near to 0kg /$cm^2$ after irrigation and developed up to 2.5kg /$cm^2$ again by 28 days after seeding. Seedling emergence was higher in irrigated plots than non-irrigated plots at all seeding depths. Korean improved varieties were substantially lower in seedling emergence under non-irrigated condition of 1 cm deep sowing than those under irrigated condition. This poor seedling emergence resulted mainly from delayed emergence by exposing them to greater soil strength. Percent seedling emergence under irrigated and non-irrigated condition showed signifi-cant correlations at 3 and 5 cm deep sowing. Korean improved varieties belonged to the group of poor seedling emergence, and I taliconaverneco, Chinsura Boro and Weld Pally to best group under both irrigation conditions at 3 and 5cm deep sowing. Seedling emergence showed highly signifi-cant positive correlation with the plumule length of mesocotyl + 1st internode + incomplete leaf and of mesocotyl+coleoptile. Among the characters constituting plumule length, incomplete leaf length showed greatest positive correlation followed by coleoptile and mesocotyl under irrigated condition at 3 and 5 cm deep sowing, and highest correlation with mesocotyllength followed by first internode and incomplete leaf under non-irrigated condition. Days to 50% seedling emergence at 1 cm deep sowing with irrigation showed great varietal variation of 10 to 30 days, and showed high significant negative correlations with percent seedling emergence under both irrigation conditions except for 1 cm deep sowing with irrigation, Days to seedling emergence revealed sig-nificant negative correlations with plumule characters except 2nd internode, showing highest cor-relation with incomplete leaf length.
The systemic insecticides carbofuran $(Curaterr\; 3\%\; G)$ mephosfolan $(Cytrolane\; 2\%\; G)$ and disulfoton$(Disyston\; 5\%\; G)$ were evaluated in the field for conrol of some insects on soybeans when the insecticides were applied in seeding-pits at the rates of 4.6, 9.2 and 13.8 mg(a.i)/pit at the planting time. Control of the soybean aphid (Aphis glycines Matsumura) and the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus telarius(L.)) on soybeans was obtained for about 2 to 3 months, but their treatments were ineffective against the soybean moth (Grapholitha glycinivorella Matsumura). For the control of aphids and mites, disulfoton was better than carbofuran and mephosfolan. The insecticides slightly reduced the soybean stands, while the low-dose treatments of carbofuran slightly increased the stands. Carbofuran and mephosfolan caused severe phytotoxicity at the early stages, but disulfoton showed slight or negligible phytotoxicity. The phytotoxic symptoms in carbofuran and mephosfolan treatments were shelving the large number of brown or black-brown spots on the cotyledon and the first-leaves, and in addition to that showing necrosis along the leaf-margin. The symptoms in disulfoton treatments were slight withering along the leaf-margin of the first-leaves. In spite of good control of aphids and mites, there were no differences in soybean yield.
Shoot parts of a monocarpic and short day plant Orostachys japonicus have been used as a herbal medicine. The study was carried out to examine the effect of transplanting time (May 30, June 30, July 30) of its seedlings on its growth, morphological characters, and flowering. Two hours night-break treatment at midnight was done since Aug. 25 when samples were taken afterward every 4 weeks. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample. Plant height and inflorescence length became longer with delayed transplanting time. Number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were more and thicker when transplanted on June 30 than two other treatments. Leaves and bracts, stem, root, shoot and total dry weights showed nearly the same result to the number of leaves although floret dry weight were increased as transplanting time was delayed. Although florets were most formed when transplanted on June 30, they were not flowered because of the night-break treatment, meaning that the transplanting time had little effect on its growth and anthesis of the florets.
The variation of numbers of resin canal in cotyledon at different growing stages are observed and results are summarized as follows: 1. Resin canals of cotyledon are not found in May, but in September the average number was 3.26. 2. Unlike in later-formed needles, cotyledon resin canals were external and the range of resin canal numbers are 1 to 5. 3. Correlation coefficients between growing stages and resin canal numbers are significant. And correlations between resin canal numbers and leaf thickness, or the number and cross-section area are also highly significant. 4. Low correlation between resin canal and cotyledon number is observed.
Gourd seeds were irradiated with the doses of 0-20 Gy to investigate the effect of the low dose $\gamma$-radiation on the early growth and physiological activity. The stimulating effects of the low dose y- radiation on the early growth were not noticeably high, but were increased generally at 4-16 Gy irradiation group. The catalase and peroxidase activity of cotyledon from seeds irradiated with $\gamma$- radiation were increased at 8 Gy irradiation group. The photochemical activity of leaf was noticeably high at 4 Gy irradiation group. The photochemical yield of PSII, estimated as Fv/Fm, decreased with increasing illumination time by 50% after 4 hrs in the control and 8 Gy irradiation group, while Fo slightly increased. However, Fv/Em in the 4 Gy irradiation group decreased by 40% of inhibition, indicating that photoinhibition decreased by the low dose $\gamma$- radiation. Changes in the effective quantum yield of PSII, $\varphi_{PSII}$ and 1/Fo- l/Fm, a measure of the rate constant of excitation trapping by the PSII reaction center, showed similar pattern to Fv/Em. NPQ decreased by 70% after photoinhibitory treatment with showing similar pattern between the control and the irradiation group. These results showed the positive effect of low dose $\gamma$- radiation on the seedling growth and the reduction of photoinhibition in the 4 Gy irradiation group.
In head lettuce seedlings, NaCl stress was treated with hydroponic culture containing 0, 50, or with 100 mM NaCl in the seedling grown up to two leaf stages. Our focus was on the effect of NaCl on fresh and dry weights, antioxidant materials, and inorganic ion level. Fresh and dry weights of head lettuce seedlings increased with the increase in salinity while the optimal growth occured at 50 mM NaCl. The chlorophyll a (Chl a), total Chl and Chl a/b ratio increased 6 days after treatment with 100 mM NaCI. However, the Chl b content decreased. Total glutathione increased only in the root of head lettuce seedlings, whereas significant increase of total arcorbate content was observed in both shoot and root after the treatment with 100 mM NaCl. In addition, the NaCl treatment resulted in the decreased level of spermidine content, and a increased spermine content. Furthermore, $Na^+$ content in shoot and root increased significantly while $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, and $Mg^{2+}$ content decreased. The alteration of inorganic ion level after treatment with NaCl caused the reduction of $K^+/Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}/Na^+$, and $Mg^{2+}/Na^+$ ratio with the increase of NaCl concentration. Taken together, these findings indicate that the treatment of NaCl causes the induction of oxidative stress, and results in the alteration of metabolic mechanism in head lettuce seedlings.
