  • The fiber reinforced composite materials have many advantages due to their high strength-to-density ratios. Thus they have been widely used in many industrial applications. As the wave propagation are closely related to dynamic analysis of structures, it is very important to predict them. This paper presents a wave propagation in the axially loaded axial-bending-shear coupled composite laminated beams which are represented by the Timoshenko beam models based on the first-order shear deformation theory.

  • A new non-destructive fatigue prediction model of the composite laminates is developed. The natural frequencies of fatigue-damaged laminates under extensional loading are related to the fatigue lift of the laminates by establishing the equivalent flexural stiffness reduction as a function of the elastic properties of sublaminates. The flexural stiffness is derived by relating the $90^{\circ}$-ply elastic modulus reduction, and using the laminate plate theory to the degraded elastic modulus and the intact elastic modulus of other laminate. The natural frequency reduction model, in which the dominant fatigue mode can be identified from the sensitivity scale factors of sublaminate elastic properties, provides natural frequency vs. fatigue cycle curves for the composite laminates. Vibration tests were also conducted on $[\textrm{90}_{2}\textrm{0}_{2}]_s$ carbon/epoxy laminates to verify the natural frequency reduction model. Correlations between the predictions of the model and experimental results are good.

  • The flexural vibration of laminated composite beams with an electro-rheological(ER) fluid has been investigated to design a structure with maximum possible damping capacity. The equations of motion are derived for flexural vibrations of symmetrical, mu1ti-layer laminated beams. The damping radio and modal damping of the first bending mode are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. Finite element method is used for the analysis of dynamic characteristics of the laminated composite beams with an ER fluid. For the validation of modeling methodology using viscoelastic theory the predicted dynamic properties are compared to the measured ones by author's previous work. They are in good agreement. This paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations with an ER fluid.

  • This paper is concerned with the development of a general model for predicting material damping in laminates based on the strain energy method. In this model, the effect of interlaminar stress on damping is taken into accounts along with those of in-plane extension/compression and in-plane shear. The model was verified by carrying out the damping measurements on $90^0$ unidirectional composite beams varying length and thickness. The analytical predictions were favorably compared with the experimental data. The transverse shear($$\sigma$_{yz}$) appears to have a considerable influence on the damping behaviors in $90^0$ unidirectional polymer composites. However, the other interlaminar stresses($$\sigma$_{xz}$, $$\sigma$_z$) were shown to have little impact on vibration damping in $90^0$ laminated composite beam.

  • The present paper describes an investigation into the application of the genetic algorithm (GA) in the optimum design of composite laminated structure. Stochastic processes generate an initial population of designs and then apply principles of natural selection/survival of the fittest to improve the designs. The five test functions are used to verify the robustness and reliability of the GA, and as a numerical example, minimum weight of a cantilever composite laminated beam with a mix of continuous, integer and discrete design variables is obtained by using the GA with exterior penalty function method. The design problem has constraints on strength, displacements, and natural frequencies, and is formulated to a multidimensional nonlinear form. From the results, it is found that the GA search technique is very effective to find the good optimum solution as well as has higher robustness.

  • The responses of composite laminated beams modeled with finite element and excited by stochastic loading are studied. The cantilevered laminated beam having a 5 ply configuration is considered. The beam is 1m long, 0.1m wide, and 0.02m thick, yielding a length to thickness ratio of L/h=50. The laminated beams was assumed to be made of Born Epoxy. The four nodes at the free end of the cantilever were loaded with identical zero-mean white noise excitations. Stress and failure analysis loaded with identical zero-mean white noise excitations is carried out. Along with the obtained results, comparison and discussion are presented for the cases of symmetric-ply, antisymmetric-ply, angle-ply, and cross-ply laminated beams.

  • A feasibility investigation on vibration-based nondestructive evaluation of thermal stress-induced micro-failure in the free edge region of thin composite laminates(1mm thick) has been carried out. The failure occurrence and damage zone, which were predicted by the three-dimensional finite-element thermal stress analysis, were observed using the ultrasonic C-scan and optical microscopy. Analysis of the vibration spectrum measured from the laminate beam specimens by the vibration sweep test exhibited that the obvious decrease in resonancy frequency and some considerable increase in damping factor were associated with the micro-failure formation. The vibration technique utilizing short beam and high resonant frequency was found to be very sensitive to the thermal stress-induced damage in the thin laminates.
