This paper presents the optimum design methodology for composite wing structure which automatically calculates the safety margin using optimization framework integrating failure modes. Particularly, its framework is possible to optimize sizing procedure to prevent failure mode which has the greatest effect on reducing the sizing time of composite structure. The main failure mode was set as the first ply failure, buckling failure mode, and bolted joint stress field, and the margin was calculated to minimize the weight. The design variable is a laminate sequence database and the responses are strain, buckling, bolted joint stress field. The objective function is the mass of the wing structure. The results of buckling analysis were compared using the finite element model to verify the robustness and reliability of Composite Optimizer.
In this research, the optimization of composite structures was performed using metamodels. The optimization of composite structures requires a lot of time when optimizing the result of the time-consuming analysis. Thus, metamodels are used to replace the time-consuming analysis with simple models. RSM, kriging and neural networks are widely used metamodels. RSM and kriging were used in this study. The ultimate failure load analysis of the composite structure was approximated by metamodels. The optimizations of the composite plate were performed to maximize ultimate failure load using genetic algorithm and metamodels.

In this study, the lightweight modular design of hybrid railway carbody structures made of sandwich composites and aluminum extrusions was investigated by using topology and size optimization techniques. The topology optimum design was used to select the best material for parts of the carbody structure at the initial design stage, and then, the size optimum design was used to find the optimal design parameters of hybrid carbody structures using first-order and sub-problem methods. Through the topology optimization analysis, it was found that aluminum extrusions were suitable for primary members such as the underframe and lower side panel module to improve the stiffness and manufacturability of the carbody structures, and sandwich composites were appropriate for secondary members such as the roof and middle side panel module to minimize its weight. Furthermore, the results obtained by size optimization analysis showed that the weight of hybrid carbody structures composed of aluminum extrusions and sandwich composites could be reduced by a maximum of approximately 17.7% in comparison with carbody structures made of only sandwich composites.

In this paper, a parallel micro genetic algorithm was utilized in the optimal design of composite structures instead of a conventional genetic algorithm(SGA). Micro genetic algorithm searches the optimal design variables with only 5 individuals. The diversities from the nominal convergence and the re-initialization processes make micro genetic algorithm to find out the optimums with such a small population size. Two different composite structure optimization problems were proposed to confirm the efficiency of micro genetic algorithm compared with SGA. The results showed that micro genetic algorithm can get the solutions of the same level of SGA while reducing the calculation costs up to 70% of SGA. The composite laminated structure optimization under the load uncertainty was conducted using micro genetic algorithm. The result revealed that the design variables regarding the load uncertainty are less sensitive to load variation than that of fixed applied load. From the above-mentioned results, we confirmed micro genetic algorithm as a optimization method of composite structures is efficient.
The purpose of this paper is to suggest a lightweight design for the aluminum extrusion carbody structure of a double deck high-speed train using material substitution and size optimization method. In order to conduct material substitution, the topology optimization was used to determine the application parts of sandwich composites at the carbody structures. The results of analysis showed that sandwich composites could be applied at roof and 2nd underframe. The size optimization was used to determine thickness of the aluminum extruded and carbon/epoxy composite. The design variable, state constraint and objective function were formulated to solve the size optimization, and then, the feasible design was presented by these conditions. The results of the lightweight design showed that the weight of double deck high-speed train hybrid carbody could be reduced by 2.18(17.70%) tons.

This study aims to find the optimal skirt dimensions for a composite pressure vessel with a separated dome part. The size optimization for the skirt structure of the composite pressure vessel was conducted using a sub-problem approximation method and batch processing codes programmed using ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL). The thickness and length of the skirt part were selected as design variables for the optimum analysis. The objective function and constraints were chosen as the weight and the displacement of the skirt part, respectively. The numerical results showed that the weight of the skirt of a composite pressure vessel with a separated dome part could be reduced by a maximum of 4.38% through size optimization analysis of the skirt structure.

This paper is concerned with Anisogrid composite lattice structures whose load bearing shell is formed by systems of geodesic unidirectional composite ribs made by automatic wet winding process. Lattice structures are usually made in the form of cylindrical shell and consist of systems of helical and hoop ribs fabricated by continuous filament winding from carbon and epoxy composites. Design variables of the structure which are the angle of helical ribs, ribs spacings, and cross sectional areas are determined by the method of minimization of satety factors whick is described in the paper. And, fabrication methods and actual experimental results are presented.
