  • In this paper, the structural optimum design method of composite rotor blade cross-section was investigated with the genetic algorithm. An auto-mesh generation program was developed for iterative calculations of optimum design, and stresses in the blade cross-section were analyzed by VABS (variational asymptotic beam sectional analysis) program. Minimum mass of rotor blade was defined as an object function, and stress failure index, center mass and blade minimum mass per unit length were chosen as constraints. Finally, design parameters such as the thickness and layup angles of a skin, and the thickness, position and width of a torsion box were determined through the structural optimum design method of composite rotor blade cross-section presented in this paper.

  • The rotor blade is an important component of a tidal stream turbine and is affected by a large thrust force and load due to the high density of seawater. Therefore, the performance must be secured through the geometrical and structural design of the blade and the blade structural safety to which the composite material is applied. In this study, a 1 MW class large turbine blade was designed using the blade element momentum (BEM) theory. GFRP is a fiber-reinforced plastic used for turbine blade materials. A sandwich structure was applied with CFRP to lay-up the blade cross-section. In addition, to evaluate structural safety according to flow variations, static load analysis within the linear elasticity range was performed using the fluid-structure interactive (FSI) method. Structural safety was evaluated by analyzing tip deflection, strain, and failure index of the blade due to bending moment. As a result, Model-B was able to reduce blade tip deflection and weight. In addition, safety could be secured by indicating that the failure index, inverse reserve factor (IRF), was 1 or less in all load ranges excluding 3.0*Vr of Model-A. In the future, structural safety will be evaluated by applying various failure theories and redesigning the laminated pattern as well as the change of blade material.

  • In order to improve the structural safety and light-weight design of aircraft floats, natural frequency and static stress analysis are performed under water and ground landing conditions. A finite element mesh based on the design configuration of light aircraft floats is modeled, and simplified water and ground landing loads are applied to this model. The natural frequency and stress analysis of aluminum-alloy floats are carried out first. Then, the structural performance of the floats is re-analyzed in the case of laminated composites, and the numerical results are compared each other. It is concluded that, by tailoring the laminated composites with respect to stacking sequence and ply thickness, the structural safety of the light-weight floats can be improved.

  • In this study, two residential complexes, both built in the New City area after 2006 and both composed of over 500 households, were selected to estimate an efficient accessibility and connectivity index using accessibility and connectivity theories and methods from previous studies. With architectural blueprints, the nodes and edges of both residential complexes were drawn out and the accessibility matrixes were derived using these nodes and edges. As a result, the connectivity indices of both residential complexes were lower than 1, the accessibility index of Dong-tan was 86.922 being smaller than the accessibility index of Ilsan, 96.199, and the efficiency index of both residential complexes were similar being 0.26. With these indices it is expected to geometrically estimate the residential complexes and predict the pedestrian passing conveniences.

  • We tried to find out the technological innovation properties of the National Research and Development Projects (NRDPs) through scientometric analysis of patent data generated by the NRDPs. The distribution of technology groups in patent data shows that NRDPs are highly focused on the Information Technology(IT) group. The Relative Cites Index(RCI) analysis implies that the Biotechnology(BT) group will emerge in the future. The Relative Family Indices(RFIs) are high among the high technological impact groups such as BT and IT. We defined new measures related with technological convergence and collaborativenessopenness relations among R&D agents. Using network analysis techniques, we analysed the absorption-derivation relations among technology groups and the opennesscollaborativeness relations among R&D agents. Recently, both the share of hetero-plural technology groups and the collaboration among different R&D agents are increasing.

  • The application of multicopters using a battery is limited by the short endurance due to the low energy density. A propeller is one of crucial components that determine the performance of the multicopter. In the present study, a systematic method for predicting the endurance of multicopters is described. Propeller performance database are constructed using the data from UIUC Propeller Data Site. Using the 'trendline' function of MS Excel software, the performance of the commercial propellers are represented as a function of polynomials. The multicopter's endurance is computed iteratively using Peukert's Law and considering the voltage drop effect. We evaluated the endurance of multicopters that use commercial propellers. The endurance of the multicopter was within the range of 28 min. to 36 min. It is expected that the present method can be utilized for optimal propeller selection for the given multicopters.

  • Currently, fluid transfer steel pipes take a lot of time and expense to maintain all facilities due to new construction and painting or corrosion and aging. Therefore, this study was conducted for designing a CFRP pipe structure with high corrosion resistance and chemical resistance as a substitute for steel pipes. The helical/hoop pattern was cross-laminated to improve durability, and HNT was added to suppress the moisture absorption phenomenon of the epoxy. The HNT/CFRP pipe was manufactured by a filament winding process, and performed a mechanical property test, and a moisture absorption test in distilled water at 70℃. As a result, the highest bending strength was obtained when the hoop pattern was laminated with a thickness equivalent to 0.6% of the pipe. The 0.5 wt% HNT specimen had the highest moisture absorption resistance. Also, the delamination phenomenon at the interlayer interface was delayed, resulting in the lowest strength reduction rate.

  • This paper presents the performance evaluation. optimal design. and complex obstacle detection of an overlapped ultrasonic sensor ring by introducing a new concept of effective beam width. It is assumed that a set of ultrasonic sensors of the same type are arranged along a circle of nonzero radius at regular spacings with their beams overlapped. First, the global positional uncertainty of an overlapped ultrasonic sensor ring is expressed by the average value of local positional uncertainty over the entire obstacle detection range. The effective beam width of an overlapped ultrasonic sensor ring is assessed as the beam width of a single ultrasonic sensor having the same amount of global positional uncertainty, from which a normalized obstacle detection performance index is defined. Second. using the defined index, the design parameters of an overlapped ultrasonic sensor ring are optimized for minimal positional uncertainty in obstacle detection. For a given number of ultrasonic sensors, the optimal radius of an overlapped ultrasonic sensor ring is determined, and for a given radius of an overlapped ultrasonic sensor ring, the optimal number of ultrasonic sensors is determined. Third, the decision rules of positional uncertainty zone for multiple obstacle detection are provided based on the inequality relationships among obstacle distances by three adjacent ultrasonic sensors. Using the provided rules, the obstacle outline detection is performed in a rather complex environment consisting of several obstacles of different shapes.
