  • This paper presents the fabrication and 3-point flexion testing of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite face/aluminum honeycomb core sandwich panels. Specimen sandwich panels were fabricated with three honeycomb types (3.18 mm, 4.76 mm, and 6.35 mm cell size) and three panel radii (flat, r = 1.6 m, r = 1.3 m). The curved sandwiches were fabricated normally with the core in the W-direction. The tensile mechanical properties of the CFRP $2{\times}2$ twill fabric face laminate were evaluated (modulus, strength, Poisson's ratio). The measured values are comparable to other CFRP fabric laminates. The flat sandwich 3-point flexion test core shear strength results were 11-30% lower than the manufacturer published data; the test set-up used may be the cause. With a limited sample size, the 1.3 meter panel curvature appeared to cause a 0.8-3.8% reduction in ultimate core shear strength compared to a flat panel.

  • Flexible display interface is capable of creating new user behaviors based on its characteristics of outstanding surface representation and display transformations such as bending, rolling, and folding. Thus, it is being discussed that the newly emerging flexible display interface can offer a different user experience that the previous flat display couldn't. However, as it is hard to find studies that identify the general attributes of user experience in the area of flexible display research, this study was intended to identify and label experience that users expect in a flexible display interface. For this purpose, this study first investigated literature reviews about user experience in previous digital media interface and flexible display interface and conducted interview research in order to reflect the users' perception, collecting 52 items that represent user experience. In addition, these items were used as measurements to deduct different types of user experience, and 308 interviewees participated in the interview research process. As a result, 10 types of user experience were developed from the results of the survey: functionality, understandability, pleasure, convenience, familiarity, stimulation, adaptability, collectivity, reality, and aesthetic.

  • This paper proposes an approach for composite surface reconstruction from 2D serial cross-sections, where the number of contours varies from section to section. In a triangular surface-based approach taken in most reconstruction methods, a triangular $G^{1}$ surface is constructed by stitching triangular patches over a triangular net generated from the compiled contours. In the proposed approach, the resulting surface is a composite $G^{1}$ surface consisting of three kinds of surfaces: skinned, surface is first represented by a B-spline surface approximating the serial contours of the skinned region and then serial contours of the skinned region and then transformed into a mesh of rectangular Bezier patches. On branched and capped regions, triangular $G^{1}$ surfaces are constructed so that the connections between the triangular surfaces and their neighboring surfaces are $G^{1}$ continuous. Since each skinned region is represented by an approximated rectangular $G^{2}$ surface instead of an interpolated triangular $G^{1}$ surface, the proposed approach can provide more visually pleasing surfaces and realize more efficient data reduction than the triangular surface-based approach. Some experimental results demonstrate its usefulness and quality.

  • This paper reports an experimental study for evaluating the effect of temperature on the mode I, mode II and mixed-mode interlaminar fracture toughness of adhesive joints with a curved cross-section of filament-wound dome-separated composite pressure vessel. Mode I and mixed-mode interlaminar fracture toughness were evaluated using DCB specimens, while mode II interlaminar fracture toughness was determined using ENF specimens. $[{\pm}10^{\circ}]_6$, $[{\pm}27^{\circ}]_6$ and ($[{\pm}10^{\circ}]_3/FM73/[{\pm}27^{\circ}]_3$) winding specimens with the curved cross-section were considered. In-situ temperature environments were simulated with a range of $-30^{\circ}C-60^{\circ}C$ using an environmental chamber and furnace. Experimental results on the effect of temperature indicate that interlaminar fracture toughness tends to be high at low temperature and is degraded with increase in temperature. For specimen types, it was found that interlaminar fracture toughness of $[{\pm}10^{\circ}]_3/FM73/[{\pm}27^{\circ}]_3$ winding specimens considered as adhesive joints of dome and helical part was higher than other specimens.

  • A chameleonic surface proposed in this study was a pin-art and 3D display device for generating arbitrary shapes. A smooth and continuous surface was formed using slim telescopic actuators and high-elasticity composite material. Realistic 3D shapes were continuously generated by projecting dynamic mapping images on the surface. A slim telescopic actuator was designed to show long strokes and minimize area for staking. A 3D shape was formed by thrusting and extruding the high-elasticity material using multiple telescopic actuators. This structure was advantageous for generating arbitrary continuous surface, projecting dynamic images and lightening weight. Because of real-time synchronization, a distributed controller based on EtherCAT was applied to operate hundreds of telescopic actuators smoothly. Integrated operating software consecutively generated realistic scenes by coordinating extruded shapes and projecting 3D image from multiple projectors. An opera content was optimized for the chameleon surface and showed to an audience in an actual concert.

  • Cellulose fibers, being fairly strong and stiff as well as cheap and plentiful with low energy demand during manufacture, are strong contenders for the reinforcement of cement-based materials. Cellulose fiber-cement composites, generally manufactured by slurry-dewatering procedure, can find applications in the production of flat and corrugated cement sheets and many other thin-sheet cement products. This paper presents the results of an experimental study concerned with the effects of fiber content and moisture conditions on the flexural performance of these composites. An effort was also made to study the effect of pozzolanic admixtures on the flexural performance in different moisture conditions. The test results obtained were analyzed statistically using the analysis of variance in order to derive reliable conclusions. The results generated in this study were indicative of significant effects of fiber content and moisture condition of flexural performance. There is a tendency in flexural strength to increase in increase in fiber content up to 8%: flexural toughness values continue to increase even at higher fiber contents. Moisture content has a significant effect on the flexural performance. There is a tendency in flexural strength to decrease and flexural toughness to increase with increasing moisture content Composites incorporating pozzolans showed an increase in the flexural strength while slightly reducing the flexural toughness and were sensitive to variations in moisture content.

  • Today, in order to improve fuel efficiency and dynamic behavior of automobiles, an era of light weight and simplification of automobile parts is being formed. In order to simplify and design and manufacture the shape of the product, various components are integrated. For example, in order to commercialize three products into one product, product processing is occurring to a very narrow area. In the case of existing parts, precision die casting or casting production is used for processing convenience, and the multi-piece method requires a lot of processes and reduces the precision and strength of the parts. It is very advantageous to manufacture integrally to simplify the processing air and secure the strength of the parts, but if a deep and narrow pocket part needs to be processed, it cannot be processed with the equipment's own spindle. To solve a problem, research on cutting processing is being actively conducted, and multi-axis composite processing technology not only solves this problem. It has many advantages, such as being able to cut into composite shapes that have been difficult to flexibly cut through various processes with one machine tool so far. However, the reality is that expensive equipment increases manufacturing costs and lacks engineers who can operate the machine. In the five-axis cutting processing machine, when producing products with deep and narrow sections, the cycle time increases in product production due to the indirectness of tools, and many problems occur in processing. Therefore, dedicated machine tools and multi-axis composite machines should be used. Alternatively, an angle spindle may be used as a special tool capable of multi-axis composite machining of five or more axes in a three-axis machining center. Various and continuous studies are needed in areas such as processing vibration absorption, low heat generation and operational stability, excellent dimensional stability, and strength securing by using the angle spindle.
