Static and dynamic train load tests were conducted to evaluate the train load transfer mechanism in the roadbed which was retained by two types (fully and partially) of segmental retaining walls reinforced by geogrid. The test roadbed was 2.6m high, 5m wide, and 6m long. A combination of earth pressure gages, displacement transducers, and strain gages were placed in specific locations to measure the responses. Test results showed that the wall displacement pattern as well as the earth pressure for the fully reinforced retaining wall was different from those for the partially reinforced retaining wall. In the dynamic train load test, the strain in the upper part of the wall tended to decrease, and both the residual deformation and the rate of the deformation were significantly lower than those in the current design standard.

ECC is a special kind of high performance cementititous composite which exhibits typically more than 2% tensile strain capacity by bridging microcracks at a crack section. Therefore, micromechanics should be adopted to obtain multiple cracking and strain hardening behavior. This paper propose a linear elastic analysis method to simulate the multiple cracking and strain hardening behavior of ECC. In an analysis, the stress-crack opening relation modified considering the orientation of fibers and the number of effective fibers is adopted. Furthermore, to account for uncertainty of materials and interface between materials, the randomness is assigned to the tensile strength(${\sigma}_{fci}$), elastic modulus($E_{ci}$), peak bridging stress(${\sigma}_{Bi}$) and crack opening at peak bridging stress(${\delta}_{Bi}$), initial stress at a crack section due to chemical bonding, (${\sigma}_{0i}$), and crack spacing(${\alpha}_cX_d$). Test results shows the number of cracking and stiffness of cracked section are important parameters and strain hardening behavior and maximum strain capacity can be simulated using the proposed method.
This paper presents a practical method to efficiently extract the rotational part of a $3{\times}3$ matrix that changes continuously in time. This is the key technique in the corotational FEM and the shape matching deformation popular in physics-based dynamic deformation. Recently, in contrast to the traditional polar decomposition methods independent of time, an iterative method was proposed that formulates the rotation extraction in a physics-based way and exploits an incremental representation of rotation. We develop an optimization method that reduces the number of iterations under the assumption that the maximum magnitude of the incremental rotation vector is limited within ${\pi}/2$. Realistic simulation of dynamic deformation employs a sufficiently small time step, and thus this assumption is not problematic in practice. We demonstrate the efficiency and practicality of our method in various experiments.

For high performance concrete, due to its low water cement ratio (water binder ratio) and addition of mineral admixtures, pretty high autogenous shrinkage and thermal deformation occur at very early age of casting (especially before hardening). This may lead to early age cracking of HPC structures, and then may influence the durability of HPC. This paper has monitored the early age properties of HPC successfully by embedded FBG strain sensor. The results showed that the deformation increased rapidly within the first day after HPC casting. And its value is up to $85{\mu}{\varepsilon}$, which is the 30% of two-month deformation ($280{\mu}{\varepsilon}$). Considering the durability and permeability of HPC, the first-day deformation is pretty high and can not be neglected. Also the superior capability of FBG sensors such as continuity, stability and multiplexed technique etc, has been demonstrated.

A finite element method has been developed to study the material nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrte structures. Concrete behavior under the biaxial state of stress is represented by a nonlinear constitutive relationship which incorporates tensile cracking, tensile stiffening effect between cracks and the strain-softening phenomenon beyond the maximum compressive strength. The concrete model used is based upon nonlinear elasticity by assuming concrete to be an orthotropic material and modeled as equivalent uniaxial stress-strain constitutive relationship using equivalent uniaxial strain. The streel reinforcement is assumed to be in a uniaxial stress state and is modeled as a bilinear, elasto-plastic material with strain hardening approximating the Bauschinger effect. In plane stress state, R.C. beams is modeled as a quadratic element that has two degrees of freedom in each node. And this results of finite element analysis are compared with the experimential results of midspan deflection, stresses and strains.

This study focuses on the design of the tapered joints of a wind power turbine. The main variables of the tapered joint are the transmitted torque, shaft diameter, contact area of the tapered ring, and tightening torque of the bolts, which applies a compressive pressure from the hub to the shaft. The stress distribution of the taper fit was calculated under axisymmetric plane strain conditions because of the small taper angle. The axial displacement of the clamp can be calculated from the radial elastic deformation and the taper angle. The stress field of each ring is obtained from the cylinder stress equation. To verify the accuracy of the calculation, finite element (FE) analysis was performed, and the results of the calculation and FE analysis were compared. The hoop stress of the tapered surface showed a discrepancy of approximately 10, but the trends of the stress distributions of each component and the relative movement obtained by FE analysis were in good agreement with the analytical calculation results.

A solid state emulsion haying high velocity gradient shows two important transition ranges in the plot of storage modulus(G') as a function of shear strain, when the state is changed from solid to liquid. However, a solid state emulsion having low velocity gradient shows only one apparent transition range when the change from solid to liquid state takes place. The result implies the importance of the surface properties in the solid state emulsion. The addition of water phase in the solid state emulsion reduces the modulus in the modulus in the surface transition range by increasing interfacial friction and weakening the matrix. The addition of pigments increases the modulus in the modulus in the surface transition range by reinforcing the matrix, when there is no wafer phase in the solid state emulsion. When the solid state emulsion has water phase, however, the addition of pigments decreases the modulus in the modulus in the surface transition range.

Contrast enhancement plays an important role in various computer vision systems, since their usability can be improved with visibility enhancement of the images affected by weather and lighting conditions. This paper introduces a histogram modification algorithm that reflects the properties of original images in order to eliminate the saturation effect and washed-out of image details due to the over-enhancement. Our method modifies the original histogram so that an additive term fill histogram pits and the gamma correction suppresses histogram spikes. The parameters for the additive term and gamma correction are adjusted automatically according to statistical properties of the images. Experimental results for various low contrast and hazy images demonstrate that the proposed contrast enhancement improves visibility and reduces haze components effectively, while preserving the characteristics of original images, than the conventional methods.

This paper describes a determining method of weighting factors for two-point interpolation filters. The interpolation filters is implemented by applying modifying functions to the linear interpolation. Here, there is a problem of determining weights when modifying functions being engaged. The previous method determined the weights by imposing c1-continuity on the interpolation kernels. However, this approach is unable to use the property of individual modifying functions. In this paper, on the basis of spectral analyses of the modifying functions and image signals, we provide a determination method by experimental results. Thus, many experiments are carried out to do so. The results indicate that different weights are required for different modifying functions and also the proposed method outperforms than the previous method.
This study evaluated gender preferences regarding the mechanical properties of polymers that are typically used as cooperative robot skin. Gender-based preferences of workers aged 20~30 and polydimethylsiloxane were examined according to the body parts which is most frequently in contact with the robot during operation. The factors influencing preference, i.e., stiffness and stickiness, as measured by strain rate and contact angle, respectively, were analyzed to compare gender-based differences. Female preferred stiffer materials with small strain rates while male preferred softer materials with large strain rates. As a result of evaluating mechanical properties of the materials to relate to gender-based preference, we found that female tended to prefer Dragon-skin with the lowest stickiness, and a low strain rate, during compressive creep tests. In contrast, male tended to prefer Ecoflex with high strain rate regardless of stickiness. Therefore, these results provide basis for material selection when considering cooperative robot skin.
