Today we are witnessing an increasingly widespread use of cameras in our lives for video surveillance, robot vision, and mobile phones. This has led to a renewed interest in computer vision in general and an on-going boom in human activity recognition in particular. Although not particularly fancy per se, human gait is inarguably the most common and frequent action. Early on this decade there has been a passing interest in human gait recognition, but it soon declined before we came up with a systematic analysis and understanding of walking motion. This paper presents a set of DBN-based models for the analysis of human gait in sequence of increasing complexity and modeling power. The discussion centers around HMM-based statistical methods capable of modeling the variability and incompleteness of input video signals. Finally a novel idea of extending the discrete state Markov chain with a continuous density function is proposed in order to better characterize the gait direction. The proposed modeling framework allows us to recognize pedestrian up to 91.67% and to elegantly decode out two independent gait components of direction and posture through a sequence of experiments.

In Space Syntax, the greater the degree of integration between separate links, the greater the links' accessibility from the target network. As such, planning pedestrian walks so that links with high degrees of integration are connected, or else inducing high integration value land use are both valid options. The travel distribution model reflects how walking demand, or more specifically, the pedestrian, partakes in route choosing behavior that minimizes select criteria, notably level of discomfort, as measured using travel distance and time. The model thus demonstrates travel patterns associated with demand pertaining to minimization of discomfort experienced by the pedestrian. This research introduces a method that integrates Space Syntax and the pedestrian travel distribution model. The integrated model will determine whether regions with high degrees of integration are actually being used as pivots for pedestrian demand movement, as well as to explain whether the degree of integration is sustained at an appropriate level while considering actual movement demand. As a means to develop the integrated model, a method that combines display of the visibility of the space syntax network and road-divided links is proposed. The pedestrian travel distribution model also includes an alternative path finding mechanism between origin and destination, which allows for uniform allocation of demand.
The effect of passing pedestrians'characteristics on locational goodwill was empirically modeled and tested. The theoretical basis for the study was central place theory, bid rent and, agglomeration theory, and demand externality theory. The data included information on goodwill, retail rents and passing pedestrians' characteristics in 100 retail trade areas in Seoul. The empirical model was tested with the sample of 1,307 retail units in Seoul, South Korea. The data set was analyzed with the Classification and Regression Tree software. As the results, using the regression tree method, the variables does affect locational goodwill in the each retail trade area were the volume of pedestrians around 2:00 pm on weekdays, volume of pedestrians around 4:00 pm on weekdays, and volume of pedestrians around 8:00 pm on weekdays. In summary, not only the economic base in the retail trade area but also the volume of passing pedestrians should be considered to determine the locational goodwill.
The congestion of pedestrians impedes the utilization efficiency of a subway station. Conflicts among pedestrians due to unseparated pedestrian flows not only increase the impedance of pedestrian mobility but also negatively affect on pedestrian safety. This paper analyzes the travel characteristics of bi-directional pedestrian flow based on microscopic movements, and evaluates the operation efficiency on separating the traffic line. The subway station was simulated in a 2-D grid structure by applying Discrete Element Method, and the movement is organized in each cell of the grid. As a result, the model explicates that separating the traffic line and encouraging the 'Keep right rule' would be mostly effective for the conflicting flows. Therefore, applying the 'Walking Guidance System' would be efficient to improve the pedestrian convenience and mobility.

There has been various pedestrian-friendly planning for making walkable cities. However, the representation of urban pedestrian spaces that should be the basis of the pedestrian-friendly planning tends to be far from reality. This is due to the absence of a consensual way to represent pedestrian spaces in the city. In this context, this study aims to propose a method to properly represent pedestrian spaces. For this purpose, this study first reviews the patterns of representing pedestrian spaces appearing on city maps and examines their merits and limits. After that, the criteria of pedestrian traversability and the mapping method are proposed on a trial basis for representing pedestrian spaces. Then, applying this to the case sites, Mokdong and Euljiro, this paper demonstrates how the operation of representing pedestrian spaces works. It is expected that the results of this study would be used as the basic foundation for a more developed representation of effective pedestrian-friendly planning.

Recently, the importance of monitoring and management measures for bicycle road related facilities has been increasing. However, research on the monitoring and evaluation of users' safety and convenience in walking spaces including bicycle path is insufficient. In this study, we would like to construct health monitoring data for cylists-pedestrians mixed road using a mobile mapping system, and propose a plan to calculate the level of service of the mixed roads from the perspective of pedestrians and cyclists using artificial intelligence based object detection techniques. The monitoring and level of service calculation method of cylists-pedestrians mixed roads proposed in this study is expected to be used as basic information for planning and management such as maintenance and reconstruction of walking spaces in preparation for the increase of electric bicycles and personal mobility in the future.
Various researches have been performed on the topic of pedestrian traffic flow. At the beginning, the modeling and simulation method for the vehicular traffic flow was simply applied to pedestrian traffic flow. Recently, CA based simulation models are frequently applied to pedestrian flow analysis. Initially, the square Lattice Model is a base model for applying to pedestrians of counterflow and then Hexagonal Lattice Model improves its network as a hexagonal cell for more realistic movement of the avoidance of pedestrian conflicts. However these lattice models express only one directional movement because they express only one directional movement. In this paper, MLPM (the Multi-Layer Pedestrian Model) is suggested to give various origins and destinations for more realistic pedestrian motion in some place.

3D data are in great demand for pedestrian navigation recently. For pedestrian navigation, we needs to reconstruct 3D model in detail from people's eye. In order to present spatial features in detail for pedestrian navigation, it is indispensable to develop 3D model not only in outdoor environment but also in indoor environment such as underground shopping complex. However, it is very difficult to acquire 3D data efficiently by mobile mapping without GPS. In this research, 3D shape was acquired by Laser scanner, and texture by CCD(Charge Coupled Device) sensor. Continuous changes position and attitude of sensors were measured by IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit). Moreover, IMU was corrected by relative orientation of CCD images without GPS(Global Positioning System). In conclusion, Reliable, quick, and handy method for acquiring 3D data for indoor environment is proposed by a combination of a digital camera and a laser scanner with IMU.

The floor field model is the micro pedestrian model based on a cellular automata for modeling pedestrian movement in the interior space using the static and dynamic floor field. It regards a form of pedestrian as square but the actual pedestrian's shape and size are similar to ellipsoid or rectangle. Because of this, we are difficult to give a rotation effect to pedestrians and there is a limit to reflect an impact of clogging and jamming. Also, this model is not able to reflect an impact of a posture and visibility effectively in the pedestrian movement. In this study, we suggest the improved pedestrian model incorporating the actual shape and size of pedestrian. The pedestrian's shape is defined not square but rectangle which is close to the actual body size of Korean. Also, we define the model which is able to represent the impact of clogging and jamming between pedestrians by adding the pedestrian's posture. We develop the simulator for testing the suggested model and study the difference between two models by comparing a number of effects. As a result, we could confirm solving the problem with dynamic value in the existed model and reflecting the panic effect in evacuation situation.
