원통형 펌프 흡입정 벽면에서 발생하는 수중 보텍스 제어 (Control of Subsurface Vortex on Cylindrical Sump Wall)

  • The subsurface vortex - which occurs inside the cylindrical sump - was visualized through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and experiment. The analysis of subsurface vortex inside the cylindrical sump was already carried out using CFD techniques by the first author. To understand the subsurface vortex more clearly, an experimental analysis was carried out with a 1/5th scale model; and the flow rate was calculated according to the similarity law. The experimental results of vortex visualization matches well with the CFD results. The surface roughness model and Anti Vortex Device (AVD) model have been investigated to control the subsurface vortex. For the case of average surface roughness of 1mm and 5mm, the subsurface vortex appears and the vorticity is higher when compared to that of a smooth surface condition. However, for the AVD model, the subsurface vortex is completely removed and the internal flow is stabilized.

  • In this paper, we report the numerical and experimental solutions of the axi-symmetric flows in the axial plane driven by an impingement of fluid from the bottom wall of a circular cylinder. We managed to visualize successfully the flow pattern shown on the vertical plane through the container axis. The numerical results are shown to compare well with the experimental results for the case of infinity Rossby number. The satisfactory agreement between the two results was possible when in the numerics the free surface was treated as a solid wall so that a no-slip condition was applied on the surface. The numerical solutions reveal that inertial oscillation plays an important role at small Rossby numbers, or at a larger background rotation.

  • The aim of this study is to provide fundamental informations that make it possible to use a cool stream and a hot stream simultaneously. We changed the pressure of compressed air that flows into a tube, the inner diameter of orifice that a cold stream exits, and the mass flow rate ratio. And in each case, we measured the temperature of a cold stream and a hot stream in each exit of a tube. Also we measured the axial temperature distribution and the radial temperature distribution in internal space of a tube. From the study, following conclusive remarks can be made. Average flow rate that flows into a tube is in proportion to square root of inlet pressure. As inlet pressure increases axial and radial temperature distribution in the inner space of vortex-tube increase. As mass flow rate ratio change, separation point moves.

Because the numerical results calculate on the assumption that vortex flows are axi-symmetric flow on the other hand real experimental results are show asymmetric flow. 펌프 흡수정내 발생된 보텍스에 대한 CFD 예측 (CFD Prediction on Vortex in Sump Intake at Pump Station)

  • In large pump station, vortex generation such as free-surface vortex and submerged vortex occurring around pump intake, or at bell-mouth inlet has been an important flow characteristics which should be considered always to keep away the suction of air-entrained or cavitated flow. In this study, a commercial CFD code was used to predict accurately the vortex generation for the specified intake design. These result shows the preliminary result of submerged vortex prediction for the Turbo-machinery Society of Japan Sump Test CFD standard model. At bottom wall, air volume fraction (red color) was found in a large scale to explain the submerged vortex generation at particular operation and configuration condition. And these indicate the free surface formation behind the bell mouth. Particularly, non-uniform approaching flow is a major parameter to govern the occurrence of the free-surface vortex. Futhermore the comparison between turbulence ($k-{\epsilon}$ & $k-{\omega}$ model) mode were executed in this study.

  • In this paper, we report the numerical and experimental solutions of the dynamic characteristics of a vortex ring in a circular cylinder generated by impinging a fluid blob from a hole on the bottom wall of the cylinder. We managed to visualize successfully the flow pattern shown on the vertical and horizontal planes by using a specially designed optical apparatus. Results of three-dimensional computation for the flow are shown to be in a satisfactory agreement with the experimental ones. We also report the experimental results which show a breaking of the axi-symmetric pattern after the vortex touches the free surface.

보텍스튜브를 이용한 충돌냉각의 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Investigation of Jet Impingement Cooling Using the Vortex Tube)

  • The jet impingement cooling characteristics are investigated experimentally. The study is motivated by the potential application of local hot spot cooling by means of the vortex tube. The purposes of this research are to examine the effect of the nozzle-block spacing and flow rate. The results of jet through vortex tube is compared with ones of circular Jet. Flow visualization by the smoke-wire technique is also performed to investigate the flow structure. As the nozzle-block spacing is increased and flow rate decreased, the cooling effect of the Jet through the vortex tube decreases mere remarkably than that of the circular jet. So the cooling effect for the jet through the vortex tube is higher than that for the circular jet at $H/D{\leq}3$, $Q{\geq}10m^3/h$.

  • An experimental study to establish a standard of sump model test of pump station was implemented. Comparison of foreign standard was also performed. Configuration condition around a bell mouth suction intake was easily adjusted by 3-axis traversing system and partition allocation. Operational condition was also varied widely to give accurate test data. PIV was also introduced to produce Quantitative analysis of flow field such as free-surface vortex and submerged vortex occurring in the model test. More detailed vortex behaviors were represented by PIV analysis.

  • In general, the function of intake structure, whether it be a open channel, a fully wetted tunnel, a sump or a tank, is to supply an evenly distributed flow to a pump station. An even distribution of flow, characterized by strong local flow, can result in formation of surface or submerged vortices, and with certain low values of submergence, may introduce air into pump, causing a reduction of capacity and efficiency, an increase in vibration and additional noise. Unfortunately in order to design the sump station, the reasonable code or the standards weren't presented yet in Korea. Thus, some researchers had often referred the HI code, JSME code or CEN code to design the sump station. This study aims to prescribe the standard of sump design which were matched well the Korean pump station. Thus, the HI code and TSJ code would be interpreted fully to Korean language, the part of interpreted clauses of the western codes would be selected to compose the standard.
