Surface layers of stone cultural properties including the soluble salt need consolidation because they are mostly very weak. There is a lot of research on the penetration depth of consolidant in stone and the effect of consolidant on mechanical stability of deteriorated structure. But some conservation experiences show that consolidation with silicic acid ester is not successful on salt contaminated stone cultural properties. In this study, in order to assess the influence of soluble salts$(CaSO_4\;2H_2O,\;NaNO_3)$ on the efficiency of consolidation on the deteriorated stone cultural properties(Nationalgalerie, Berlin, Germany) sandstone samples have been soaked with the salts solution. The impregnation of consolidant based on ethyl filicate have been afterwards carried out on these samples. As a result, it confirms that the soluble salts act as a preventer or consolidation. They fill up the pores in the stone and prevent that sufficient amount of consolidant enter deeply into the stone. According to this result, if use silicic ethyl ester as a consolidant for the research object which is built by Nebra sandstone, desalination is necessary before the treatment with consolidant. But it is also reported by other researches that some soluble salts improve the consolidation effect. Therefore it should be necessary to pre-study about salt and its harmfulness before the consolidation treatment. In order to consolidate without the aggravative damage in salt contaminated stone cultural heritage, we must first of all study the relations among salt, stone and consolidant.

Oxidative damage resulted from reactive oxygen species (ROS) is one of the main causes for the decrease of the viability during in vitro culture and cryopreservation process. This experiment was performed to determine the effects of antioxidants on the human hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) during cryopreservation procedure. HSCs cultured in vitro with or without antioxidants were frozen and then examined for stem cell potential after thawing. The cell viability of thawed HSC was increased in $\alpha$-tocopherol and ascorbic acid treatment group compared to control group ($62.7{\pm}8.0%$) and it was higher in 150 uM $\alpha$-tocopherol treatment group ($70.5{\pm}7.0%$). No significant difference was observed in the membrane integrity in all groups. In auto-differentiation rate, no significant difference was appeared in all groups, but was lower in 150 uM $\alpha$-tocopherol ($7.3{\pm}2.6%$) compared to control group ($10.1{\pm}1.6%$). These results demonstrate that treatment of antioxidants improves the efficiency of cryopreservation for HSC and $\alpha$-tocopherol may be considered effective antioxidant for the protective effect on HSC.
The Geumran-gasa (Kasaya) and Jangsam of the monk Samyeong are historical relics and were designated as object No.29, a Buddhist costume of the Joseon Dynasty, by the National Folklore Cultural Heritage, in 1973. In 1984, after being treated for the purposes of washing and preserving the shape of the garments, the object was kept in the Temple Museum of Pyochungsa, as their holding institution. However, regular inspection conducted by the Cultural Heritage Administration in 2013 determined the need for a re-treatment. The Geumran-gasa had been originally made with 25 strips, but it had been separated into two parts and many pieces were lost. A part of the collar in the Jangsam was lost as well. Therefore, both relics needed to be restored. The re-treatment process involved pre-investigation, washing, reinforcement fabric dyeing, restoration, and fumigation. In particular, we focused on reinforcing the damaged parts and restoring the missing parts by applying advanced materials and methods in order to restore the original form as much as possible. This conservation is the result of the re-treatment of the cultural properties by replacing the old material used in past treatments and applying advanced methods under the basic principle of reversibility in conservation treatment.

The archival objects are tangible evidence related to the public service. They are unique and offer information representing the specific events, time or person. The archival objects as modern cultural heritage do not have the guideline to classify, manage and conserve them. Especially, it is difficult to apply general conservation process for burial artifacts, because there are few study example of conservation for metal archival objects and they have complex administrative value. We tried to find suitable material and application method for consolidation of copper alloy archival object. We choose three kinds of wax and acrylic resin for burial artifacts and had done comparative analysis of their characterizations following kinds and coating methods. As a result of evaluation by several surface analysis such as optical microscope, measuring film thickness, adhesive strength, contact angle and yellowing test, acrylic resin can use to archival objects of copper alloy, effectively but the method of heating after dip-coating with Wax B used before can get best effect of consolidation.
In this paper, key features of an excavated submarine article and general process of its conservation will be introduced. First, the conservation process of removing salt from an excavated submarine article was done by desalting stage, and the X-Ray photographing was done for its inner and outer damage detection. The process of making a restoration mold with the beeswax for the broken part, making restoration material with fillers and grinded broken pieces of earthen ware have similar color and quality, and color matching distinguishable for the naked eye after the whole conservation process have been finished.
The currently used wax agents for preserving outdoor metal structures, despite their advantages, have disadvantages such as low endurance and reliability. These wax agents are easily damaged by acid rain, dust, moisture in the air, yellow dust, and air pollutants, resulting in corrosion within a short period after the initial conservation treatment. In addition, aged wax can also exhibit changes in the color or gloss, and also give a sense of difference in the surface. Given these existing problems, it is necessary to develop improved materials for metal preservation. Therefore, this study analyzed the characteristics and applications of the existing wax coating agents in order to identify their disadvantages and to develop a better material for metal preservation. In this regard, this study developed a perilla oil based compound wax and conducted experiments to test its endurance. The new compound wax agent was exposed to outdoor and acid rain conditions: it showed four times and 1.5 times the endurance of the existing wax agents in outdoor and acid rain conditions, respectively. In addition, the new agent seems to be more durable and protective as evidenced by the chromaticity, polish maintenance, and contact angle results. Further, although it is 1.3-1.8 times thicker than the existing agents, the new agent shows a more even surface. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the new compound wax agent based on perilla oil is a better alternative to the existing was coating agents.
The bronze bowl with lid excavated from Eunnyeongchong Tumulus in Gyeongju had been united in the past and then damaged. We removed deteriorated adhesive and other impurities from it and reunited it. Some fragments of the artifact has been lost; in particular, only half of the whole main body remains. Therefore, it needed restoration treatment for exhibition and conservation. The lid, relatively much part of which remains, was treated with the method that could easily detach the restored part; the main body with much restored part was united using epoxy resin so that the restored part could well bear the weight of the artifact.
Traditional paste materials and additives for investigation were selected through careful literature survey. We used the immersed glutinous rice flour, soybean as a traditional paste materials and a yellow wax, alum, and lime as additives. The effect of additives on viscosity, pH, adhesive strength, flexibility, antibacterial activities, mildew resistance, and conservation properties were examined. It was found that there was a relationship between the properties(viscosity, pH, and adhesive strength) and the characteristics of additives. Alum increased flexibilty but decreased viscosity, adhesive strength, and pH. Yellow wax deceased flexibilty, viscosity, adhesive strength, and pH. Lime increased flexibilty, viscosity, adhesive strength, and pH. The conservation properties increased by adding all additive. The present work was therefore carried out with the objective of offering the base datum for keeping traditional papers and textiles using traditional paste.
