Combustion of the Korean Anthracite and wood-pellet was characterized in air atmosphere with variation of heating rate(5, 10, 20 and $30^{\circ}C/min$) in TGA. The results of TGA have shown that the combustion of the wood-pellet occurred in the temperature range of $200{\sim}620^{\circ}C$ which is much lower than that of Korean anthracite. Activation energies of the wood-pellet and Korean anthracite, determined by using Friedman method were 44.12, 21.45 kcal/mol respectively. Also, their reaction orders(n) and pre-exponential factors(A) were 5.153, 0.7453 and $4.01{\times}10^{16}$, $1.39{\times}10^6(s^{-1})$ respectively. In order to find out the combustion mechanism of the wood-pellet and Korean anthracite, twelve solidstate mechanisms defined by Coats Redfern Method were tested. The solid state combustion mechanisms of the woodpellet and Korean anthracite were found to be sigmoidal curve A3 type and a deceleration curve F1 type respectively. Also, from iso-thermal combustion($300{\sim}900^{\circ}C$) of their char, the combustion characteristics of their char was found. Activation energies of the their char were 27.5, 51.2 kcal/mol respectively. Also, pre-exponential factors(A) were $2.55{\times}10^{12}$, $1.49{\times}10^{10}(s^{-1})$ respectively. Due to the high combustion reactivity of wood-pellet compared with Korean anthracite, combustion atmosphere will be improved by co-combustion with Korean anthracite and wood-pellet.

This study aims to develop an analysis model using a commercial process simulator-ASPEN PLUS for an IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) system consisting a dry coal feeding, oxygen-blown entrained gasification process by Shell, a low temperature gas clean up process, a General Electric MS7001FA gas turbine, a three pressure, natural recirculation heat recovery steam generator, a regenerative, condensing steam turbine and a cryogenic air separation unit. The comparison between those results of this study and reference one done by other engineer at design conditions shows consistency which means the soundness of this model. The greater moisture contents in Illinois#6 coal causes decreasing gasifier temperature and the greater ash and sulfur content hurt system efficiency due to increased heat loss. As the results of sensitivity analysis using developed model for the parameters of gasifier operating pressure, steam/coal ratio and oxygen/coal ratio, the gasifier temperature increases while combustible gases (CO+H2) decreases throughout the pressure going up. In the steam/coal ratio analysis, when the feeding steam increases the maximum combustible gas generation point moves to lower oxygen/coal ratio feeding condition. Finally, for the oxygen/coal ratio analysis, it shows oxygen/coal ratio 0.77 as a optimum operating condition at steam/coal feeding ratio 0.2.
The DMM (Deep mixing method) is a construction method in which an improved pile is installed in the soft ground by excavation ground using an auger and then mixing ground stabilizer with soil. Improved pile installed in the soft ground by the DMM may have different compressive strength depending on the properties and characteristics of the soil. In the previous study, laboratory tests were performed on the ground stabilizer for the DMM developed by using the ash of the circulating fluidized bed boiler as a stimulator for alkali activation of the blast furnace slag. And the test results were analyzed to derive the correlation between the unit weight of binder (γB) and the uniaxial compressive strength (qu). In this study, comparative reviews were conducted on the correlations derived from the same laboratory tests on soil material collected from the Saemangeum area and the stability of the site was evaluated by analyzing the test results performed at the site. As a result, the clay collected from the Saemangeum area satisfies the correlation between the unit weight of binder (γB) and the uniaxial compressive strength (qu) derived from the previous study. And the result of the test at the field showed a higher uniaxial compressive strength than the standard strength at the field, indicating excellent stability.
This paper describes the preliminary study on the development of multi-stage membrane demonstration plant for removal of carbon dioxide from flue gas stream being emitted from LNG boiler in thermal power generation plant. The prerequisite requirement is to design and develop the membrane process producing a $99\%\;CO_2$ with $90\%$ recovery from LNG flue gas of 1,000 $Nm^3$/day. Asymmetric polyethersulfone hollow fiber membranes and membrane modules developed in this laboratory[1] were used in this study. Using the permeation data for the hollow fiber membranes, modelling on the membrane module and multi-stage membrane process was done to meet the requirement condition of the process design. The effects of the operating pressure of feed and permeate side and feed concentration on $CO_2$ purity and recovery were investigated experimentally with the developed hollow fiber modules. These experimental results matched well with theoretical modelling results.
This study was carried out to utilize the waste heat from office building for turfgrass culture on a roof garden. Heating system had been installed in the middle of soil profile on the turf areas in the garden plots. The results showed that the installation of heating system increased the shoot density, turfgrass quality, coverage rate, and root length compared with the control plots. The surface temperature of heating plots reached at $10.9^{\circ}C$ when the control plot showed $0^{\circ}C$, however, the soil moisture content was decreased 1.9% by the heating system. When the height of the snow accumulation reached over a 15cm, the it took only 4 days to melt out completely, while the height did not changed those period at the control plots. When the water temperature in boiler increased to $60^{\circ}C$ from a proper temperature of $55^{\circ}C$ in turf growth, the desiccation from leaf tip was started to occur caused by drought stress. More detail research should be followed in stress physiology in turf management in roof garden operation.

Uses of fossil fuels like coal and oil increases with industrial development, and problems like abnormal climate come up as greenhouse gas increases. Accordingly, studies are actively conducted on eco-friendly renewable energy as a replacement for the main resources, and especially, wood pellets with high thermal efficiency are in the limelight as an alternative fuel in thermal power stations and gas boilers. However, despite a constant increase in their usage, few studies are conducted on their risks like fire and spontaneous combustion. Thus, this study found the auto-ignition temperature and critical ignition temperature of wood pellets with a change in flow rate in a thermostatic bath, using a sample vessel with 20 cm in length, 20 cm in height and 14 cm in thickness to predict their ignition characteristics. Consequently, at the flow rate of 0 NL/min, as the core temperature of the sample increased to higher than the ambient temperature, they ignited at $153^{\circ}C$, when the critical ignition temperature was $152.5^{\circ}C$. At the flow rates of 0.5 NL/min and 1.0 NL/min, it was $149.5^{\circ}C$, and at the flow rate of 1.5 NL/min, it was $147.5^{\circ}C$. Consequently, at the same storage, the more the flow rate, the lower the critical ignition temperature became.

In this study, XRF, Loss on ignition, SEM, and PSA analysis were performed on four types of fly ash in Vietnam and compared with fly ash in Korea. As a result, PC boiler fly ash in Vietnam has a similar chemical composition to that of PC boiler fly ash in Korea, where the content of SiO2, Al2O3, and Fe2O3 accounts for about 70%. In addition, the result showed that blast furnace slags in Vietnam and Korea have similar quality criteria and performance. A binder material mixing test using four types of fly ash supplied from Vietnam was conducted, and the compressive strength ranged from 7.60 to 13.25 MPa after 28 days of curing. Vinh Tan fly ash showing the highest compressive strength was selected as the soil injection material for the chemical grouting method. For the formulation of the chemical grouting method, sodium silicate No.3 and silica-sol were used as liquid-A. As a result of measuring the gel time and the compressive strength of the homogel, they showed good performance satisfying the quality criteria applied in Korean construction fields. Therefore, Vinh Tan fly ash can be used as a soil injection material for the chemical grouting method.

In this study, a multi-staged pilot-scale membrane plant was constructed and operated for the separation of $CO_2$ from LNG-fired boiler flue gas of 1,000 $Nm^3/day$. The target purity and recovery ratio of $CO_2$ required for the pilot plant were 99% and 90%, respectively. For this purpose, we previously developed the asymmetric polyethersulfone hollow fibers and evaluated the effects of operating pressure and feed concentration of $CO_2$ on separation performance[1,2]. The permeation data obtained were also analyzed in relation with the numerical simulation data using counter-current flow model[3,4]. Based on these results, we designed and prepared the demonstration plant consisting of dehumidification process and four-staged membrane process. The operation results using this plant were compared with the numerical simulation results on multi-staged membrane process. The experimental results matched well with the numerical simulation data. The concentration and the recovery ratio of $CO_2$ in the final stage permeate stream were ranged from $95{\sim}99%$ and $70{\sim}95%$, respectively, depending on the operating conditions. This study demonstrated the applicability of the membrane-based pilot plant for $CO_2$ recovery from flue gas.

Co-firing of biomass with coal is a promising combustion technology in a coal-fired power plant. However, it still requires verifications to apply co-firing in an actual boiler. In this study, data from the Thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA) and Drop tube furnace(DTF) were used to obtain the combustion characteristics of biomass when co-firing with coal. The combustion characteristics were verified using experimental results including reactivity from the TGA and Unburned carbon(UBC) data from the DTF. The experiment also analyzed with the variation of the biomass blending ratio and biomass particle size. It was determined that increasing the biomass blending ratio resulted in incomplete chemical reactions due to insufficient oxygen levels because of the rapid initial combustion characteristics of the biomass. Thus, the optimum blending condition of the biomass based on the results of this study was found to be 5 while oxygen enrichment reduced the increase of UBC that occurred during combustion of blended biomass and coal.

Recently, recycling of industrial by-products and CO2 reduction have been important issues in the world. In this reason, applications and reuse of Fly ash as a binder for concrete, which is generated in thermoelectric power plant, have been one of the effective recycle methods. In order for Fly ash to be applied to concrete, Korean Standard(KS) has selected and managed quality such as $SiO_2$, fineness, specific gravity, ignition loss and activity index. However, there is a limits for activity index, whose test period required is at least 28 days or 91 days. Activity index is the critical indication standard to determine mechanical strength of concrete that contained Fly ash. To complement the disadvantage of test method, this research provided "API test method", which quickly measure Pozzolanic reaction of Fly ash can be considered as a alternative of activity index. Then, the adaptable API test method need to be investigated through comparative analysis with the test result of API, activity index and K-value. The test method can make evaluation of Fly ash quality faster and more accurate. As a result, most Fly ash produced in Korea has not been satisfied in the KS quality standard except water content and specific gravity, and especially fluidized bed boiler ash has its characteristics. Also, API, activity index and K-value have superior interrelationship. The interrelationship between API and activity index and K-value gets increased as the material age gets higher, so API test can be considered as very useful test method for Pozzolanic reaction evaluation of Fly ash.
