Mechanical Properties and Microstructural Analysis of Sn-40Bi-X Alloys (Sn-40Bi-X 합금의 기계적 물성과 미세조직 분석)

  • 저온용 무연 솔더의 대표 조성으로 고려되고 있는 Sn-58Bi(융점: $138^{\circ}C$) 공정(eutectic) 조성은 우수한 강도에도 불구하고 연성(ductility) 측면에서의 문제점이 지속적으로 보고되고 있다. 따라서 이 합금계의 연성을 최대로 개선시킬 수 있으면서도 실제 상용화가 가능한 합금 조성의 개발 연구가 요청된다. 본 연구에서는 Sn-Bi 2원계 조성에서 최대의 연성을 나타내는 것으로 보고된 Sn-40Bi 조성에 미량의 합금원소를 첨가함으로써 최대의 연성을 확보하는 한편, 그 연성 특성이 변형속도에 어느 정도 민감한지를 인장 실험을 통해 결정하고자 하였다. 합금원소로는 0.1~0.5 wt%의 Ag, Mn, In, Cu를 선택하였으며, 인장 시편을 제조하여 $10^{-2}$, $10^{-3}$, $10^{-4}\;s^{-1}$의 3종류로 변형속도를 변형시켜가며 응력-변형 곡선(stress-strain curve)을 측정하였고, 조성별, 변형속도별로 최대인장강도(ultimate tensile stress, UTS) 및 연신율 결과들을 정리하였다. 합금원소를 첨가한 조성의 경우는 모든 시험 조건에서 Sn-40Bi보다 우수한 연신률을 나타내는 것으로 측정되었으나, $10^{-2}\;s^{-1}$의 빠른 변형속도에서는 그 향상 정도가 상대적으로 감소하는 경향이 관찰되었다. 특히 Sn-40Bi-0.5Ag 조성의 경우 느린 변형속도에서 특히 눈에 띄는 연신률 값을 나타내며, 모든 변형속도 조건에서 가장 우수한 연성을 나타내었다. 한편 Sn-40Bi-0.1Cu 조성의 경우 변형속도에 따른 연신률의 변화 정도, 즉, 변형속도에 따른 연신률의 민감도가 매우 커 $10^{-4}\;s^{-1}$ 속도에서는 Sn-40Bi-0.5Ag에 버금가는 연신률 값이 측정되었으나, $10^{-2}\;s^{-1}$ 속도에서는 가장 나쁜 연신률 특성을 보여주었다. Sn-40Bi-0.2Mn 조성은 최고의 연신률 향상 특성을 나타내지는 않았으나, In을 첨가한 경우보다는 대체적으로 우수한 연성을 나타내었다. 이상의 각 합금별 연성 특성은 인장시험 전의 미세조직 관찰 결과와 인장시험 후 파면부의 조직변화 관찰 결과로부터 해석되었다. 그 결과 석출상의 형성 여부, 인장 시험 중 재결정 조직의 형성 여부, 라멜라(lamellar) 조직의 분율과 라멜라 간격(lamellar spacing)의 정도 또는 $\beta$-Sn과 라멜라 조직 사이의 결정립계와 라멜라 조직 내 결정립계에서의 슬라이딩 모드(sliding mode) 변형 정도, 석출상의 크기와 분포 정도 등이 연신률 및 변형속도 민감도와 같은 연성 특성에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 인자인 것으로 분석되었다.

Fatigue Damage of Quasi-Isotropic Composite Laminates (의사등방성 복합재 적층판의 피로손상)

  • In this study, when the applied directions of tensile loading is changed fatigue damage of quasi-isotropic composite laminates was discussed. Low cycle fatigue tests of $[0/-60/+60]_s$ laminates and $[+30/-30/90]_s$ laminates were carried out. Material systems used were AS4/Epoxy and AS4/PEEK. The fatigue damage of $[+30/-30/90]_s$ laminates differed from that of $[0/-60/+60]_s$ laminates. The position of delamination generated at AS4/Epoxy and AS4/PEEK $[+30/-30/90]_s$ laminates appeared differently according to the kind of matrix. Critical values of strain energy release rate were obtained by using the strain measured at the initiation of delamination. The experimental results agreed well with the results obtained by the proposed method for determining strain energy release rate.

  • Fiber optic TR-EFPI(total reflected extrtinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric) sensor was developed to measure the strain of structures, such as building, bridge, aircraft, etc. It has been difficult to distinguish the increase and decrease of the strain from the conventional fiber optic EFPI sensor because their signals only have a sinusoidal wave pattern related to the change of strain. Also, the absolute strain could not be measured by the simple fiber optic EFPI sensor. In this study, in order to measure the magnitude of strain with the direction of strain, the fiber optic sensor was simply constructed with the total reflected EFPI sensor probe. This probe was manufactured with a single mode fiber and a mirror coated fiber in a silica glass capillary tube. The output signal of this fiber optic TR-EFPT sensor can give the information about the magnitude and the direction of strain. The loading-unloading test was performed by the universal testing machine with alluminum beam specimen to compare the strain from fiber optic TR-EFPI sensor with the value from electrical strain gauge. In the result of this experiment. the strain from fiber optic TR-EFPI sensor had a good agreement with the values from the electrical strain gauge.

  • To improve ride quality and running stability of high speed train(HST), it is important that connection between coaches adopts the articulated bogies by using a gangway ring, unlike the conventional independent bogies assembled with car bodies. Although the gangway ring should be ensured absolute safety against passenger movement between coaches during train operation, there is still a lack of quantitative durability criteria of that. Therefore, in order to improve the passenger safety of HST, it is important to study the test requirements on durability evaluation for the ring. In this study, seven mixed loading cases were derived from the triaxial loading(vertical/lateral/longitudinal) modes. The safety factor of each component is at least 2.4 or more from the results of the finite element analysis. In addition, fatigue safety was evaluated through durability analysis from the viewpoint of strain-life design. Durability tests for the gangway ring carried out a total of 10 million cycles in 4 phases load conditions. After the durability test, the defect of each component was investigated using nondestructive testing techniques.

  • This paper proposes a double cantilever sandwich-beam method fur evaluating the frequency dependence of dynamic characteristics of rubbers. The flexural vibration of a double cantilever sandwich-beam specimen with an inserted rubber layer was studied using a finite element simulation in combination with the sine-sweep test. Quadratic relationships of dynamic elastic modulus and material loss factor of rubbers with frequency were suggested employing the least square error method.

  • In this paper, a progressive failure analysis method was developed using the Hashin failure criterion and crack band model. Using the failure criterion, the failure initiation was evaluated. If the failure initiation is occurred, the damage variables at each failure modes (fiber tension & compression, matrix tension & compression) was calculated according to linear softening degradation behavior and the variables are used to derive the damaged stiffness matrix. The damaged stiffness matrix is reflected to damaged material and the progressive failure analysis is continued until the damage variables to be 1 that complete failure of material. A series of processes were performed using FE commercial code ABAQUS with user defined material subroutine (UMAT). To evaluate the proposed progressive failure model, the experimental results of open hole composite laminate tests was compared with numerical result. Using digital image correlation system, the strain behavior also was compared. The proposed numerical results were coincided well with the experimental results.

Testing and Numerical Analysis on the Fracture Characteristics of Composite Adhesive Bonded Single-Lap Joints (복합재료 Single-Lap 본딩 조인트의 파괴 특성에 대한 실험 및 수치해석 연구)

  • The experimental and numerical investigations on the failure characteristics of the secondary bonded composite single-lap joints were performed. The initiations and growths of cracks were observed using CCD camera and acoustic emission sensor during the tension tests of the joint specimens. The structural behaviors of the specimens were predicted by the geometric nonlinear two-dimensional finite element analysis. The three types of observed initial cracks were included in each finite element models and the strain energy release rates of each specimen models were calculated by VCCT(Virtual Crack Closure Technique) technique. The tension tests showed that the initial cracks occurred in the 60∼90% of final failure loads and the major failure modes of the specimens were adhesive failure and the delamination between the 1st and 2nd ply of laminate. The specimens with the thicker bondline had earlier crack initiation loads but higher crack propagation resistance and eventually better loading capability. The delaminations were mostly observed in the thicker bondline specimens. The mode I values of calculated strain energy release rates were higher than the mode II values in the all specimen models considering the three types of initial cracks. The mode I and total strain energy release rates were calculated as higher values in the order of initial crack in the edge interface, comer interface and delamination between the plies of laminate.

  • Recent days composite bridge dock is gaining attraction due to many advantages such as light weight, high strength, corrosion resistance, and high durability. In this study, composite deck models of hat, box and triangular section type wore fabricated with VARTM Process. For these models, three point flexural tests wore carried out both in strong and weak axis. The experimental results were compared with each other to determine efficient section profile. It has been demonstrated that composite sandwich deck has strong potentials to be used as bridge deck in the new construction and rehabilitation works.

  • The application of reinforcement design to ensure the structural safety of electronics in small satellites is limited by the spatial constraints of the satellite structure during launch vibrations. Additionally, a reliable evaluation approach is needed for mounting highly integrated devices that are susceptible to fatigue failure. Although the Steinberg fatigue failure theory has been used to assess the structural integrity of electronic devices, recent studies have highlighted its theoretical limitations. In this paper, we propose a structural methodology based on the critical strain theory to design the digital control unit (DCU) of the X-band SAR payload component for the small SAR technology experimental project (S-STEP), a small satellite constellation. To validate the design, we conducted modal and random analyses using simplified modeling techniques. Based on our methodology, we ultimately demonstrated the structural safety of the electronics through analysis results, safety margin derivation, and functional tests conducted both before and after the launch test.

  • Alloy 617 is one of the primary candidate materials to be used in a very high temperature reactor (VHTR) system as an intermediate heat exchanger (IHX). To investigate the low cycle fatigue behavior of Alloy 617 weldments at a high temperature of $850^{\circ}C$, fully reversed strain-controlled fatigue tests were conducted with the total strain values ranging from 0.6~1.5%. The weldment specimens were machined using the weld pads fabricated with a single V-grove configuration by gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process. The fatigue life is reduced as the total strain range increases. For all testing conditions, the cyclic stress response behavior of the Alloy 617 weldments exhibited the initial cyclic strain hardening phenomenon during the initial small number of cycles. Furthermore, the overall fatigue cracking and the propagation or cracks showed a transgranular failure mode.
