This paper measures the mechanical properties of corrugated cardboard, an eco-friendly packaging material, and applies these measurements to the MAT_PAPER model in LS-DYNA for finite element analysis. Although MAT_PAPER is primarily designed for modeling the behavior of paper, this research demonstrates its applicability to corrugated cardboard as well. Tensile, compression, and shear behaviors of a corrugated cardboard were measured and analyzed, and based on these results, six yield surfaces were derived and integrated into the MAT_PAPER model. By comparing the finite element analysis of the material tests and the low velocity collapse analysis of the corrugated cardboard square boxes with each experimental results, it was shown that the behavior of corrugated cardboard could be equivalently considered well by the MAT_PAPER model. However, since the model is not rate-dependent, the high strain rate properties of liner materials were measured and used for strain rate correction. Consequently, this matches well with the results of the high-speed compression tests of the corrugated cardboard square boxes.
This study was conducted in order to analyze the mechanical characteristics of multiloop edgewise archwire (MEAW). The purposes were 1) to compare load deflection rate (LDR) of MEAW with that of various other arch wires in the individual interbracket span, 2) to compare the wire stiffness in the interbracket span with that in the multi-L-loop region (the span from distal border of the bracket of the lateral incisor to the mesial border of the buccal tube of the second molar), and 3) to verify the experimental results with theoretically derived formula. The single L-loops of five different horizontal lengths and multi-L-loops for the upper and lower arches were made out of .$016\times.022$ permachrome stainless steel wire. Straight segment of plain stainless steel, TMA and NiTi wire of the same dimension were prepared. The LDR was measured using Instron model 4466 with the load cell of 50N capacity at cross head speed of 1.0mm/min, and maximum deflection of 1.0mm. Five specimens were tested under each experimental condition. The wire stiffness number for each interbracket region and multi-L-loop region was calculated from the LDR and the interbracket spans. By dividing the theoretical model of multi-L-loop into 35 linear segments, the energy stored in each segment was obtained. Then the LDR and wire stiffness of single L-loop and multi-L-loop were calculated and compared. The findings were as follows : 1) The average LDR of MEAW in the individual interbracket region was 1/1.53 of that of the NiTi,1/2.47 of TMA and 1/5.16 of the plain stainless steel wire. 2) The wire stiffness of MEAW in the multi-L-loop region was 1.53 times larger than that in the interbracket region, and the LDR was almost twice as large as that of NiTi in that region. 3) According to the theoretically derived equation, the wire stiffness of the single L-loop was lower than that of multi-L-loop. The results of this study suggest that MEAW has the unique mechanical Property which could allow individual tooth movement and transmit elastic force effectively through the entire arch wire.
Societal interest on a faster transportation demands an increase of the train speed exceeding current operation speed of 350 km/h. To trace the pattern of variations in displacements and subsoil stresses in the concrete slab track system, finite element simulations were conducted. For a simple track-vehicle modeling, a mass-point system representing the moving train load was developed. Dynamic responses with various train speeds from 100 to 700 km/h were investigated. As train speeds increase the displacement at rail and subsoil increases nonlinearly, whereas significant dynamic amplification at the critical velocity has not been found. At low train speed, the velocity of elastic wave carrying elastic energy is faster than the train speed. At high train speed exceeding 400 km/h, however, the train speed is approximately identical to the elastic wave velocity. Nonlinearity in the stress history in subsoil is amplified with increasing train speeds, which may cause significant plastic strains in path-dependent subsoil materials.

A stepped specimen which is subjected to step loading is modeled to study the initiation and growth of adiabatic shear band using explicit time integration finite element code. The material model for specimen includes effects of thermal softening, strain hardening and strain rate hardening. Various mesh sizes are tested to check whether they are small enough to model highly localized discontinuous phenomena reasonably well. It is shown that the number of adiabatic shear band depends on impact velocity and it is also shown that the initiation and growth of adiabatic shear band inversely depends on prescribed velocity at the top of specimen.

When reinforced concrete structures are exposed to fire, their mechanical properties such as compressive strength, elasticity coefficient and rebar yield strength, are degraded. Therefore, the structure's damage assessment is essential in determining whether to dismantle or augment the structure after a fire. In this study, the confinement effect of lateral reinforcement of RC column according to the numbers of fire exposure face and stirrup was verified by fire resistant test with the heating temperatures of $400^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$. The test results showed that the peak stress decreases and peak strain increases as the temperature is getting higher, also transverse ties are helpful in improving the compressive resistance of concrete subjected to high temperature. Based on the results of this study, the residual stress of confined concrete under thermal damage is higher at the condition of more lateral reinforcement ratio and less fire exposure faces. The decreasing ratio of elastic modulus of more confined and less exposure faces from the relationship of load and displacement was also smaller than that of opposite conditions.

SCRIPT (Symbol/Character Recognition In Pen-based Technology) is an algorithm for on-line recognition of handwriting Hangeul. English upperacase letters, decimal digits, and some keyboard symbols. The shape of handwriting symbols has a large variation even when written by the same person. Though the feature analysis approach using a conventional decision tree is efficient, it is not robust under shape variations and prone to misclassification. Thus, a new method to overcome this shortcoming is necessary. In this paper, a feature analysis algorithm using two fuzzy decision trees which utilize the hierarchical property of the pattern is proposed. The first tree is used to represent the stroke shape, and the other tree is used to represent the relation between the strokes. since this method stores various possibilities. it is robust to shape variations and can readily modify false selections. In addition, there is a large increase in the recognition rate of high-level patterns due to low-level candidated. Experimental results show 91% recognition rate for Hangeul at the recognition speed of 0.33 second per character, and the recognition rate of alphanumerics and some keyboard symbols is 95% at 0.08 second per symbol. This is 8~18% increase in the recognition rate over th method not applying fuzzy decision trees.

It is well-known that the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced composites under hydrostatic pressure environment is different from that of atmospheric pressure environment. It is also known that the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced composites is affected by strain rate. In this work, we investigated the effect of strain rate on the compressional elastic modulus and fracture stress of fiber-reinforced composites under hydrostatic pressure environment. The material used in the compressional test was unidirectional carbon/epoxy composites and the hydrostatic pressures applied was 250 MPa. Compressional tests were performed applying various strain rates of 0.05 %/sec, 0.25 %/sec, 0.45 %/sec, and 0.75 %/sec. The results showed that the elastic modulus increased with increasing strain rate while the fracture stress was little affected by the strain rate.

In this study, effects of grain size distribution on the shear strength and rheological properties are investigated for coarse- and fine-grained soils by using direct shear apparatus. Shear strengths are estimated for fine-grained soils with the maximum particle size of 0.075 mm and coarse-grained soils with the maximum particle size of 0.425 mm and fine contents of 17% prepared at dry and liquid limit states. The direct shear tests are conducted under the relatively slow shear velocity, which corresponds to the reactivated landslide or debris flow after collapse according to the landslide classification. In addition, for the evaluation of rheological properties, residual shear strengths for both fine- and coarsegrained soils prepared under liquid limit states are obtained by multiple reversal shear tests under three shear velocities. From the relationship between residual shear strengths and shear rates, Bingham plastic viscosity and yield stress are estimated. The direct shear tests show that cohesions of fine-grained soil are greater than those of coarse-grained soil at both dry and liquid limit states. However, internal friction angles of fine-grained soil are smaller than those of coarse-grained soil. In case of rheological parameters, the plastic viscosity and yield stress of fine-grained soils are greater than those of coarse-grained soils. This study may be effectively used for the prediction of the reactivated landslide or debris flow after collapse.
As the behavior of the debris flow due to the torrential rains in mountain is affected by shear strength and rheological properties of the fine fraction in the ground, the evaluation of both properties is necessary to estimate the behavior of the debris flow. The objective of this study is to evaluate the shear strength and rheological properties using the direct shear apparatus. The direct shear tests are conducted for two kinds of fine-grained soil specimens, which are in dry state and liquid limit state. From the direct shear tests, shear strengths are measured according to the normal stresses applied on the specimens to evaluate the cohesion and internal friction angle. In addition, reversal shear tests are performed for the fine-grained soil specimens in liquid limit state according to the shear rate to evaluate the residual shear strength. The results of direct shear tests show that the specimen at the liquid limit state has lower internal friction angle and higher cohesion compared to the dry stated, and the residual friction angle and cohesion at the residual state are lower than those at the peak state. In the result of reversal shear test, the residual shear strength is directly proportional to the shear rate and viscosity is calculated as $73.60Pa{\cdot}s$. This study demonstrates that the direct shear apparatus can be effectively used for the evaluation of the shear strength and rheological properties of the fine-grained soils related with the debris flow.

The twin aims of the paper are to investigate the collapse strength characteristics of ship plating subject to impact pressure loads and to develop a simple structural design formula considering impact load effects. The general purpose nonlinear finite element program STARDYNE together with existing experimental results is used to investigate the collapse behavior of plating under impact pressure loads. The rigid plastic theory taking into account large deflection effects is applied to the development of the design formulation. In the theoretical method, the collapse strength formulation for plating subject to hydrostatic pressure is first derived using the rigid plastic theory. By including the strain rate erects in the formulation it can be applied to impact pressure problems. As illustrative examples, the collapse behavior of steel unstiffened plates and aluminum alloy stiffened panels subject to impact pressure loads is analyzed.
