  • The development of a crack propagation simulation model in consideration of crack closure behavior was discussed in the accompanying paper by the authors, Kim et al(2001). To verify crack propagation behavior under variable amplitude loading based on the model, calculations of effective crack driving stresses and corresponding propagation lives are carried out for load spectrums with various stress ratios, overload and underload. Good agreement is confirmed between test results in the literatures and simulations using the developed model.

  • After the concept of fracture mechanics was applied to fatigue crack propagation by Paris. Paris' law is widely used to predict fatigue crack growth behavior. Since Elber proposed the effective stress intensity factor(SIF) and showed a good agreement with experimental results using the proposed SIF, emphasis in crack propagation studies has been placed on measuring the effective stress range ratio. This paper proposes a numerical model to simulate the crack closure and propagation behaviour under various loading spectrum. The validity of the proposed model is checked by comparing with the Toyosada numerical solutions on the crack propagation behaviour. Important insights developed are summarized.

  • The characteristics of the unconsolidated sediment in Gwangyang bay was analyzed from the core samples. The porosity of the sediment showed irregular variation with respect to the sedimentation depth, which indicated that sediment weight-induced consolidation was not significant. Numerical analysis for the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of the unconsolidated sediment due to the tidal sea level change was processed. Because of the delayed excessive pore pressure change in the very low permeable mud medium, the magnitude of the excessive pore pressure for the duration of the minimum sea level exceeded the total stress from the sea water weight, which resulted in the negative (tensional) effective stress below the top surface. The in-situ effective stress, obtained by superposing the tensional effective stress on the solid weight-induced compressive stress, was remained to be tensile (quick-sand condition) near the top surface of the mud deposit. The occurrence of the quirk-sand condition provided a theoretical evidence for the insignificant consolidation and the irregular porosity variation of the sediment. When the sand is distributed on the top surface of the mud layer, the quick-sand condition occurred below the sandy mud layer and the downward movement of sand particles was facilitated.

  • A generalized linearization model for stress relaxation curves of vegetative tissues was proposed as $[F_{(o)}t^n/(F_{(o)}-F_{(t)})=k_1+k_2t]$, taking into account internal structure changes under a constant strain. Where $F_{(o)}$ is the initial force, $F_{(t)}$ is the decaying force after time t, and $k_1$, $k_2$ and n are constants. This model was well fit to stress relaxation curves of a variety of raw and processed fruits and vegetables.

  • A study on the variation of radiation stress and mean water level is carried out for the shoaling and breaking waves on a plane beach. In general, the radiation stresses computed based on the linear wave theory are overestimated. which results in the discrepancy between the computed results and laboratory data of mean water level in the surf zone. In this paper, by modifying the Svendsen's approach (1984), radiation stress is expressed in terms of water depth. The computed results are compared with the results calculated by a linear wave theory and Sawaragi's approach (1984) based on the spectrum of breaking wave components, and published laboratory data. The computed results of the modifed Svendsen's approach are favourably compared with the laboratory data.

  • An accurate method is presented for flexural vibrations of rhombic plates having all combinations of clamped and free edge conditions. The prime focus here is that the analysis explicitly considers the bending stress singularities that occur in the two opposite, clamped-free corners having obtuse angles of the rhombic plates. Accurate non-dimensional frequencies and normalized contours of the vibratory transverse displacement are presented for rhombic plates having a large enough obtuse angle of 165$^{\circ}$, so that a significant influence of clamped-free corner stress singularities may be understood.

  • In general, the radiation stresses based on the linear wave theory are overestimated which result in the discrepancy between the computed results and laboratory data of mean water level in the surf zone. Oh (1995) estimated the mean water level by using Svendsen's radiation stress model (1984) and compared with the experimental data. In this study. the computed results showed good agreements with the experimental data in the case of small wave steepness. while the results were overestimated in the case of large wave steepness. In this paper. the dimensionless radiation stress proposed by Svendsen (1984) is expressed in terms of relative water depth at breaking point and deep water wave steepness. The computed results are compared with the results calculated by d linear wave theory, Stive's model (1984). Sawaragi et al's model (1984) based on the spectrum of breaking wave components. and published laboratory data. The computed results of the modified Svendsen's model arc favourably compared with the laboratory data.

  • The procedure and the results of the full scale strain measurement of the long-range high-speed foil catamaran are described. The wave induced stresses at the center struts of the foils were measured during the sea trials in order to evaluate the hydrodynamic force acting on the foils and to verify the structural safety of the foil structures. From the statistical properties of the measured response of the stress, the most probable maximum values of the lift force and the stresses at the foils in service life of the ship are predicted and compared with the design parameters of the foils which were applied in the design of the subject ship. The available prediction processes of the measured stress are studied and the results of the applied processes are compared with each other.

  • Eighteen oriented samples from the Jeongsun limestone of the Joseon Supergroup are collected. The orientations of C-axis of calcite and e twin plane, the average thickness, numbers of twins and the widths of calcite grains in 10 samples are measured. Then, the twin strain, mean width, intensity of twin and relative magnitude and orientations of principal stresses are calculated using Calcite Strain Gauge program. Twin strain, mean width and intensitv rainge between 0.801%~10.927%, $0.43{\mu\textrm{m}}~2.03{\mu\textrm{m}}$, and 33.5~113.4twim/mm, respectively. Metamorphic temperatures calculated from twin show below $70^{\circ}C$, indicating that twins were developed within 2.3km depth. In five samples, two events with different orientations of principal stress produced calcite twins, while only one event produced calcite twins in five samples. The direction of the maximum stress is almost horizontal and the minimum is almost vertical, indicating that the stress regirne is identical with thrust fault. E-W and NW-SE are the most dominant directions of comressive stress and N-S and NE-SW directions are also shown. Comparision between paleostress orientations measured in the study and others indicates that the maximum horizontal stress oriented to E-W may represent the paleostress of period either from the Silurian to the Triassic or from the Silulian to the Permian. Paleostress oriented to NW-SE may be the major direction of stress during the Daeho orogeny.

  • Hydraulic issues such as flow resistance, side wall correction, sediment, erosion and deposition, and channel design have close relation with distribution of bed shear stresses but the measurement of the distribution of bed shear stresses is not easy. In this study the Preston tube which makes possible relatively simple measurement of bed shear stresses is used to analyze the characteristics of bed shear distribution in compound open channels with different depth ratio. The Preston tubes are made and calibrated to develop the calibration formula and then they are applied to measure bed shear stress distribution in 5 cases depth ratio condition of compound channels. The results are compared with former experiment data, and characteristics of bed shear stress distributions are studied with different channel scales and Reynolds numbers. Although bed shear distributions with depth ratio show overall agreement with former studies, some differences are verified in bed shear variation, formation of inflection point in main channel, and distribution near floodplain junction which are due to high Reynolds number. Through the study applicability of the Preston tubes are also verified and characteristics of bed shear distribution in compound channels are suggested with Reynolds number and depth ratio.
