  • To elucidate the exposure of pesticide in agricultural environment and to investigate distribution of pesticide in paddy fields. This experiment was carried out to clarify pesticide distribution in paddy fields applied with different formulations and growing stages. Initial dissipation rate of applied butachlor EW and oxadiazon EC before rice planting were more than 90% within 3 days in paddy fields. The distribution of a.i. in the pesticide formulations tested depended upon the elapsed time at each growing stage of rice plant after application. Most of pesticides applied within 15 days after transplanting of rice seedlings, more than 95%, were located in the surface water and soil regardless of pesticides; butachlor, thiobencarb and molinate GR. The distribution of iprobenfos GR, tricyclazole WP and phenthoate EC, after application 2 hours in middle growing stage (46 days after rice planting) were shown as 16.1, 48.9 and 38.9% in surface water, 83.6, 15.4 and 10.7% in soil, and 0.3, 35.7 and 50.4% in rice plants of paddy fields, respectively. Also tricyclazole WP and phenthoate EC, after application 2 hours in the late rice growing stage (90 days after rice planting) were distributed to 7.8 and 9.8% in surface water, and 21.7 and 5.1% in soil, and 70.5 and 85.1% in rice plants of paddy fields, respectively.

  • The studies were conducted to escape for laber concentration during rice harvest and barley sowing through the scattering sowing before rice harvest(SS) compared to the drilling on high ridge(DS) of barley from 1990 to 1994. There were longer in plant height and more in tiller number under the SS than those under the DS of barley while cold-injured leaves of barley were inversely affected by two different sowing methods. The barley growth was more vigorous in the DS. There was similar at heading and maturing date. The grain yield of barley was lower in the SS by 20.6% which was resulted from the reduction of spike number per m$^2$ and number of grain per spike. There was not significant at growth and yield for sowing date before rice harvest. The variation of successive years on growth, yield and its components were higher in the SS than those in the DS.

  • Experiment was conducted to and out the influence of white tip nematode on the growth of rice plant and yield. The rice plants were reduced height, number of tillers and yield when the nemato do was inoculated. Number of injured stems and density of nematode were increased 10 days after white tip symptoms appeared(Aug. 5) . There was negative correlation(r=-0.78) between percentage of injured stems and yield of rice, and critical percentage of injured stems affecting to yield in panicle formation stage was $13\%$. Weight of 1,000 grains and number of grains were reduced about $10\%$, number of panicles and panicle length were reduced about $5\%$ in nematode inoculation plot of suseptible variety, Min-higari.

  • Five of each lowland and upland rice varieties were planted in a seedling hox with three replications of randomized complete block design and it was desiccated up to complete water stress in certain leaf stage. The desiccated rice plants were supplied with water again to check survival ability of rice plant from wilting. All of the lowland varieties which showed lower yield in upland condition were superior to upland varieties in recovery ability from desiccation. Some of the morphological characteristics in relation to the recovery ability also were discussed.

  • The study was carried out to determine an optimum concentration of plant growth regulators(ABA and kinetin) on reducing NaCl toxicity during germination in rice. Plant height of a japonica cultivar Ilpumbyeo in ABA 10$^{-5}$ M was increased, while all treatments of kinetin had no clear effects on increasing the plant height. However, other rice cultivars showed slightly different reaction by PGRs compared with Ilpumbyeo. Germination rate of four rice cultivars was ranged from 53.1 to 58.2% in NaCl 1.3%. All treatments of kinetin accelerated germination rate of tested rice cultivars except Dasanbyeo compared with NaCl 1.3% treatment. The higher concentration of ABA and kinetin treatment induced the higher starch content, and while the lower concentration of two plant growth regulators induced the higher sugar content in all four rice cultivars. The free proline content of rice seedlings was highest in Ilpumbyeo among the tested cultivars under NaCl 1.3% treatment.

  • This experiment was to evaluate the growth characteristics of lodging resistance cultivated at sandbed in rice varieties. Five varieties were used in this studies. The leaf area, leaf dry weight, culm dry weight and total dry weight of cultivated rice seedling at sandbed showed the maximal values at heading stage, but decreased according to growth development. The number of newly developed roots of rice seedlings cultivated at sand pot were the most at the 30 days seedling stage, but those were decreasing at 40 to 45 days seedling stage. Cheongmyungbyeo and Dongjinbyeo showed the most vigor in newly developed roots. The bending moment at breaking of rice internodes were the largest at the 4th node, but decreased at the top internodes. Cheongmyungbyeo and Dongjinbyeo were proved lodging resistant varieties by the bending moment. The weight of culm base was positively correlated with bending moment at breaking of rice culm, but lodging index was negatively correlated weight of culm base and root dry weight, respectively.

  • This experiment was carried out to evaluate the flooding injury and yield compensating ability by uppernode tillers formed during the recovery periods. Rice plants grown in experimental field transplanted on 1st, June were completely flooded for 3 days by the artificial flooding device in each different growth stage such as middle tillering stage (20 days after transplanting), young panicle formation stage, meiotic stage and heading stage. And the farmer's rice fields which had various transplanting dates were completely flooded for 3 days by typhoon 'Thelma' from 16th to 18th, July, 1987. Percent of dead leaves and yield reduction of rice in experimental field flooded at the different growth stages were resulted that the earlier growth stages were the lower damage because of the low temperature in the earlier growth stage, but it showed opposite tendency in farmer's rice field flooded in high temperature season by typhoon 'Thelma'. Rice yield compensating ability attained to 66% of check plot yield was greatly depend on uppernode panicles induced after damage of original young panicles. Uppernode panicle produced 236 kg per 10a in polished rice by securing 690$^{\circ}C$ of accumulated mean temperature and 210 hours of sunshine during the ripening periods when headed up to 15th of September.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of N levels (0,10,20,30kg/10a) and N split rates [the rates of basal+top dressing 15 days after transplanting (DAT) : top dressing 25 days before heading (DBH) was 100 : 0, 80 : 20, 60 : 40 ] on the growth, yield, yield components, and N uptake of Seomjinbyeo (J) and Samgangbyeo (I${\times}$J). The maximum tillering stage occurred in the middle of July in both varieties, but Samgangbyeo showed the second maximum tillering stage in the middle of August probably due to the retarded early growth caused by low temperature in the tillering stage and to favoring temperature in August. Grain yield of Seomjinbyeo was similar among the N levels from 10 to 30 kg/10a without occurrence of rice blast and lodging, but that of Samgangbyeo increased as N level increased upto 30 kg/10a. Grain yield of Seomjinbyeo was higher when N was applied three times (basal and two top dressings 15 DAT and 25 DBH) compared with two times (basal and top dressing 15 DAT), but that of Samgangbyeo was not different among the N split rates. Total N uptake and the proportion of fertilizer N to the total N uptake increased as N level was higher. N uptake tended to be higher as proportion of basal+top dressing 15 DAT increased in early growth stage, but it was higher as proportion of N applied 25 DBH increased in the late growth stage. The N efficiency to produce grain per absorbed N unit decreased as N level decreased in Seomjinbyeo, but similar in Samgangbyeo.
