  • Field experiment was conducted to assess the influence of liquid compost supplemented with chemical fertilizer on the rice growth and yield in 2005. Treatments consisted of liquid compost supplemented with chemical fertilize.(LCSC), liquid manure(LM), chemical fertilizer(CF), LCSC 50% + 50%CF, LCSC 75% + 25%CF. The plant height and tiller's number in plots of 100% basal application plot by LCSC and LM plot were lower than that of chemical fertilizer. But in the plot of basal application by LCSC and top dressing by chemical fertilizer, the height and tilters of rice were significantly difference with LM application plot. And the leaf color the plots by LCSC and chemical fertilizer was darker than that of the LM application plot. In plots by LCSC treatment, number of panicles per hill was higher that of LM plot. As the plot of 100% basal application by LCSC was fertilized, the yield of rice was decreased compared with chemical fertilizer. But the rice yield of basal fertilization by LCSC and top-dressing by chemical fertilizer was 7% increased compared with LM plot. The application plots by LCSC + chemical fertilizer plot were maintained productivity of rice, the rice should be fertilized with the basal application of LCSC and top-dressing of chemical fertilizer. The quality of brown rice was best in LM and LCSC plot, whereas in chemical fertilizer plot, it was the worst by increased of protein content. The results indicates that the application of LCSC + chemical fertilizer improves quality of rice rather quantity.

  • Field experiment was carried out to investigate the annual changes of rice yield and soil properties. Hwaseongbyeo was cultivated by different tillage methods and fertilizer levels for 5 years in the paddy soil. Tilth efficiency of power tiller(PT) rotary plot was higher by 74.8%, but that of tractor tillage plot was lower by 59.0%. Water requirement in depth of no-tillage plots after rice transplanting was highest and also those of the early growing stage was higher than those of the middle growing stage. Rice yield of PT rotary plot by recommended fertilizer application was increased by 17% than that of no-tillage plot by conventional fertilizer application. By the rotary of PT and tractor, rice yield increased by 6-17% than those of no-tillage. In case of cultivating years, rice yield of 2nd year was highest, but that of 4th year was lowest. Soil bulk density and solid phase of no-tillage plot which took not tillage were highest than the other plots. The changes of soil chemical properties in the all treatments had not definite tendency.

  • A series of laboratory and greenhouse experiments were conducted to find out the possibility of tissue culture and cell culture methods as a tool to study herbicidal behaviour and herbicide tolerance screening from 1985 to 1986 at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station. For dehulled-rice culture, pure agar medium was the most appropriate in rice growth campared to other media used for plant tissue culture method. All the media but the pure agar medium resulted in growth retardance by approximately 50% and this effect was more pronounced to root growth than shoot growth. Herbicidal phytotoxicity was enhanced under light condition for butachlor, 2.4-D, and propanil while this effect was reversed for DPX F-5384 and CGA 142464, respectively. And also, herbicides of butachlor, chlornitrofen, oxadiazon, and BAS-514 resulted in more phytotoxic effect when shoot and root of rice were exposed to herbicide than root exposure only while other used herbicides exhibited no significant difference between two exposure regimes. Similar response was obtained from Echinochloa crusgalli even though the degree of growth retardance was much greater. Particularly, butachlor, 2.4-D, chlornitrofen, oxadiaxon, pyrazolate and BAS-514 totally inhibited chlorophyll biosynthesis even at the single contact of root. Apparent cultivar differences to herbicide were observed at the young seedling culture method and dehulled rice cultivars were more tolerant in DPX F-5384, NC-311, pyrazolate and pyrazoxyfen, respectively. For derant than other types or rice cultivar in butachlor, pretilachlor, perfluidone and oxadiazon while Tongil-type rice cultivars were more tolerant in DPXF-5384, NC-311, Pyrazolate and Pyrazoxyfen, respectively. For dehulled rice culture, on the other hand, Japonica-type rice cultivar was less tolerant to herbicides of butachlor, propanil, chlornitrofen and oxadiazon that was reversed trend to young seedling culture test. Cultivar differences were also exhibited within same cultivar type. In general, relatively higher tolerant cultivars were Milyang 42, Cheongcheongbyeo, Samgangbyeo, Chilseoungbyeo for Tongil-type, Somjinbyeo for Japonica-type and IR50 for Indica-type, respectively. The response of callus growth showed similar to dehulled rice culture method in all herbicides regardless of property variables. However, concentration response was much sensitive in callus response. The concentration ranges of $10^{-9}M-10^(-8)M$ were appropriate to distinguish the difference between herbicides for E. crusgalli callus growth. Among used herbicides, BAS-514 was the most effective to E. crusgalli callus growth. Based on the above results, tissue culture method could be successfully used as a tool for studying herbicidal behaviour and tolerance screening to herbicide.

  • The field trial was performed to evaluate the rice growth and yield in direct seeding cultivation with iron-coated rice seeds. The required time for seed emergence was for 9~11days in the tested direct seeding methods. That was 1~2days earlier in direct seeding with pregerminated seeds than that of direct seeding with iron-coated seeds. The seedling establishment was highest in water seeding with iron-coated seeds but there was not significant difference in terms of statistical analysis. The rice plant height was taller in water seeding with broadcasting method than that of wet hill-seeding methods and in direct seeding with iron-coated seeds than that of direct seeding with pregerminated seeds. The tiller number in the rice plant was the highest in machine transplanting at 30days after direct seeding(June 17) and in water seeding with iron-coated seeds at 45days after seeding(DAS) and 60DAS. The tiller number of 75 and 90DAS in the tested rice cultivation methods being with 352~405/m2 was not significantly different in terms of statistical analysis. The heading time was not different in rice direct seeding methods but 2 day earlier in direct seeding with iron-coated seeds than that of direct seeding with pregerminated seeds. The culm length was the highest in water seeding with iron-coated seeds and the panicle length was the longest in wet hill-seeding with pregerminated seeds. The panicle number per m2 was highest in water seeding with iron-coated seeds but not significant difference among the tested rice cultivation methods. The water seeding with iron-coated seeds resulted in the highest spikelet number per m2 and the heaviest grain weight of brown rice. Percentage of ripened kernel was the highest in wet hill-seeding with iron-coated seeds. But there were not significant among the tested rice cultivation methods. The milled rice yield in direct seeding methods was 3~21% higher than that in machine transplanting. Water seeding with iron-coated seeds recorded the highest milled rice yield being with 6.86t/ha.The occurrence of sheath blight was high according to machine transplanting>wet hill-seeding>water seeding. Weed occurrence was the highest in water seeding with pregerminated seeds. Weedy rice occurred not in machine transplanting but occured 0.6~0.7% in direct seeding methods with pregerminated seeds and 0.1% in direct seeding with iron-coated seeds.
