We evaluated the effect of dietary supplements with benzoic acid on intestinal beneficial bacteria concentration and immune response of weaning pigs. Supplementation with benzoic acid at 0.5% or control diet for 35 days resulted in a higher Lactobacillus casei concentration in the cecum. Supplementation with benzoic acid at 0.5% increased concentration of L. plantarum in the cecum. Pigs with the control diet and 0.5% benzoic acid had significantly increased concentration of B. subtillis in the cecum compared to the antibiotic group, while the concentration of B. subtillis in the rectum increased in pigs given 0.3 and 0.5% benzoic acid (p<0.05). Compared with the control group, the level of interleukin-$1{\beta}$ mRNA showed a significant decrease in the proximal small intestine in pigs fed diets supplemented with benzoic acid at 0.5% or antibiotic. Feeding 0.5% benzoic acid resulted in a marked reduction in the expression of IL-6 mRNA in the middle small intestine (p<0.05). Supplementation with benzoic acid at 0.5% or antibiotic resulted in a lower level of tumor necrosis factor-mRNA in the middle intestine. Up to 0.5% benzoic acid may be included in weaning diets for improvement of intestinal beneficial bacteria, thus modulating genes of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the gastrointestinal tract.
The dissociation constants of benzoic acid, p-methoxybenzoic acid and p-nitrobenzoic acid have been determined at $25^{\circ}C$ in ethanol-water mixtures containing 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 65 and 80 weight % ethanol by the direct conductance measurements and the method involving titration of the acid sample with perchloric acid reagent. The results by the two methods have been discussed and compared with those by other methods.
The interaction of 4-alkylbenzoic acid isomers with the micellar system of TTAB (tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide) was studied by the UV/Vis spectrophotometric method. The solubilization constants ($K_s$) of 4-alkylbenzoic acid isomers into the TTAB micellar system and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of TTAB have been measured with the change of temperature. Various thermodynamic parameters have been calculated and analyzed from those measurements. The results show that the values of ${\Delta}G^o{_s}$ for the solubilization of all the isomers are negative and the values of ${\Delta}H^o{_s}$ and ${\Delta}S^o{_s}$ are all positive within the measured temperature range. The effects of additives (n-butanol and NaCl) on the solubilization of 4-alkylbenzoic acid isomers have been also measured. There was a great change on the values of $K_s$ and CMC simultaneously with these additives. From these changes we can postulate that the solubilization sites of 4-alkylbenzoic acids are the core or deep palisade region of the TTAB micelle.
The purpose of this study was to investigate present status of use about antimicrobial agent (triclosan, ethanol) and preservatives (sodium benzoate, methyl p-hydroxybenzoate, propyl p-hydroxybenzoate) in dentifrice. 75 samples including 16 mouthwashes were analyzed in this study. Contents of triclosan and preservatives were analyzed using by HPLC and ethanol was analyzed by headspace-GC. Preservatives were detected from total 37 samples, which are suitable for the legal limits in Korea. Methyl p-hydroxybenzoate was detected from 26 samples (0.003~0.19%), propyl p-hydroxybenzoate was detected from 11 samples (0.002~0.02%) and sodium benzoate was detected from 14 samples (0.1~0.3%), respectively. Methyl p-hydroxybenzoate was detected from 6 samples (0.03~0.19%), propyl p-hydroxybenzoate was detected from 1 samples (0.01%) and sodium benzoate was detected form 5 samples (0.1~0.2%) in 20 dentifrice for children. Triclosan was not detected from 75 samples. Ethanol was detected from 16 samples (4.9~21.9%) in 19 samples; among them three samples showed the higher contents (20.5~21.9%) but ethanol contents was not labeled in these samples.
Benzoic acid (BA) and sorbic acid (SA) are the preservatives most commonly used in food. Although BA and SA are generally safe, some previous studies have shown that consumption of excessive amounts of these food additives can be a health hazard. The aim of this study was to determine the amounts of BA and SA in processed foods in Korea. Different brands of fruit juice, yogurt, cheese, dried fruits, jam, and margarine were purchased at a local market in Daejeon, Korea. Samples were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using a UV detector. Chromatographic separation was achieved with a C18 column. Methanol acetate buffer (pH 4.4) at a 35:65 v/v ratio was used as the initial mobile phase to elute BA and SA. The detector wavelength was set at 254 nm. The average test results observed for BA concentrations in fruit juice, yogurt, cheese, dried fruits, jam, and margarine were $40.26{\pm}0.02$, $2.07{\pm}0.06$, $0.02{\pm}0.09$, $0.36{\pm}08$, $265.30{\pm}0.02$, and $27.34{\pm}0.08\;mg/kg$, respectively. Average concentrations of SA in these samples were $0.92{\pm}0.06$, $1.06{\pm}0.07$, $7.30{\pm}0.01$, $14.14{\pm}0.08$, $25.65{\pm}0.06$, and $4.81{\pm}0.07\;mg/kg$, respectively. Thus, the average levels of BA and SA in the studied food items were lower than the KFDA-permitted limits. Moreover, the estimated daily intake of both BA and SA by a typical consumer were below the maximum recommended daily values.
Two conformations of benzoic acid derivatives ($NH_2$, OH, H, F, Cl, CN, NO, $NO_2$) have been investigated at MP2, DFT and HF level using the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. It was found that the cis isomers are more stable. Hydrogen bonding formation of benzoic acids has been estimated from stabilization energies. The calculated hydrogen-bonding energies of dimers showed a cooperative interaction in the cyclic ones. It was found that an electron-releasing group (ERG) into the phenyl rings resulted in the formation of more stable hydrogen bonding. Red shift of O-H bond was found from -565.3 to -589.3 for dimers. The natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis was applied to characterize nature of the interaction.
$\beta$-Cyclodextrine/benzoic acid complex was prepared and reacted with cyanuric chloride (2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine). Identification of complex formation and reaction was checked by FT-IR, UV-Vis, and EDX. By reacting this material with cotton fiber, the deodourant fiber was prepared. The deodourizing property was evaluated by the concentration changes of aqueous ammonia solution after flowing ammonia gas through the column titled with deodourant fiber prepared. The deodourizing property was increased with an increase of concentration of $\beta$-cyclodextrine unit in the fiber. In the case of $\beta$-cyclodextrine/benzoic acid complex, the deodourzing property was much increased, comparing with the $\beta$-cyclodextrine only. It was considered to be the binding of aamonia gas caused by benzoic acid in the complex.
The solubilization of p-chlorobenzoic acid in aqueous solutions of pure cationic, nonionic, amphoteric, and their mixed surfactant systems have been measured by the UV-Vis spectrophotometric method. The effects of hydrophobic tail-group with different chain length and the hydrophilic head-group on the solubilization of p-chlorobenzoic acid have been studied and also thermodynamic parameters have been calculated from the dependence of Ks values on the temperature. The results show that the values of ΔGo for the solubilization by all surfactant systems are negative and the values of ΔHo and ΔSo are all positive.
Benzoic acid polyester/lactone polyol were synthesized by polycaprolactone 0201 as diol, trimethylolpropane as triol, adipic acid as dibasic acid, and benzoic acid as monobasic acid. Polyisocyanate prepolymer Desmodur N-100 of HDI-biuret type was used in this study. Two-component polyurethane coatings were prepared by blending benzoic acid polyester/polycaprolactone, polyisocyanate, wetting/dispersing agent, white pigment, and flowing agent. Various properties were examined on the film coated with the prepared polyurethane. They showed excellent physical properties such as abrasion resistance, accelerated weathering resistance, and yellowness index. They also showed good physical properties such as flexibility, impact resistance, 60$^{\circ}$ specular gloss, cross hatch adhesion, hydrocarbon resistance, and lightness index difference. Hardness of coating showed a little poor character. The introduction of polycaprolactone 0201 as diol in the polyurethane coatings improved the hydrocarbon resistance, impact resistance, and flexibility of coatings. According to the drying and curing behavior with the contents of benzoic acid, they seem to have reasonable coating properties such as drying time of 2 to 4 hours and pot-life time of 20 to 37 hours.

The $pK_a$ values of benzoic acid and meta, para-halogen substituted benzoic acids in MeOH-$H_2O$ mixtures (0∼80% of MeOH) have been determined at 25$^{\circ}$C using a conductometric method on the basis of the Fuoss-Kraus equation, and further verified using modified conductometric method of Gelb. The dependence of $pK_a$ on halogen substituents has been discussed in terms of substituent-constant (${\sigma}$), which is devided into electron-withdrawing inductive contribution (${\sigma}_1$) and electron-donating ${\pi}$-resonance one (${\sigma}_R$). The linear-dependence of ${\sigma}_1$'s on $D^{-1}$ with positive slope and that of ${\sigma}_R$'s on $D^{-1}$ with negative slope have been interpreted on the basis of field effect and through-space interaction of ${\pi}$-lone pair of halogen substituent and ionization center via ${\pi}$-system of benzene ring.
