  • In this paper, a CORBA-based collaborative medical image analysis and visualization system, which provides high accessibility and usability of the system for the users on distributed environment is introduced. The system allows us to manage datasets and manipulates medical images such as segmentation and volume visualization of computed geometry from biomedical images in distributed environments. Using Bayesian classification technique and an active contour model the system provides classification results of medical images or boundary information of specific tissue. Based on such information, the system can create real time 3D volume model from medical imagery. Moreover, the developed system supports collaborative work among multiple users using broadcasting and synchronization mechanisms. Since the system is developed using Java and CORBA, which provide distributed programming, the remote clients can access server objects via method invocation, without knowing where the distributed objects reside or what operating system it executes on.

  • Clustering is one of widely used methods for grouping thousands of genes by their similarities of expression levels, so that it helps to analyze gene expression profiles. This method has been used for identifying the functions of genes. Fuzzy clustering method, which is one category of clustering, assigns one sample to multiple groups according to their degrees of membership. This method is more appropriate for analyzing gene expression profiles because single gene might involve multiple genetic functions. Clustering methods, however, have the problems that they are sensitive to initialization and can be trapped into local optima. To solve these problems, this paper proposes an evolutionary fuzzy clustering method, where adaptive a-cut based evaluation is used for the fitness evaluation to apply different criteria considering the characteristics of datasets to overcome the limitation of Bayesian validation method that applies the same criterion to all datasets. We have conducted experiments with SRBCT and yeast cell-cycle datasets and analyzed the results to confirm the usefulness of the proposed method.

  • Although image occupies a large part of importance on the Web documents, there have not been many researches for analyzing and understanding it. Many Web images are used for carrying important information but others are not used for it. In this paper classify the Web images from presently served Web sites to erasable or non-erasable classes. based on machine learning methods. For this research, we have detected 16 special and rich features for Web images and experimented by using the Baysian and decision tree methods. As the results, F-measures of 87.09%, 82.72% were achived for each method and particularly, from the experiments to compare the effects of feature groups, it has proved that the added features on this study are very useful for Web image classification.

  • In this study we compared three models for small area estimation, Fay-Herriot, Hierarchical Bayses model and spatio-temporal model about charter, monthly rent price index. Charter, monthly rent price of Korea are important issue in these days. Because housing type rapidly changes from self to charter and monthly rent. The accuracy of the estimation was checked on four scales, that is ARB, ASRB, AAB, ASD. In this result, the spatio-temporal model among applied models has most optimal scales about small area estimation of charter and monthly rent index.

  • This paper presents two methods for automatic estimation of threshold values in unsupervised change detection of multi-temporal remote sensing images. The proposed methods consist of two analytical steps. The first step is to compute the parameters of a 3-component Gaussian mixture model from difference or ratio images. The second step is to determine a threshold value using Bayesian rule for minimum error. The first method which is an extended version of Bruzzone and Prieto' method (2000) is to apply an Expectation-Maximization algorithm for estimation of the parameters of the Gaussian mixture model. The second method is based on an iterative thresholding algorithm that successively employs thresholding and estimation of the model parameters. The effectiveness and applicability of the methods proposed here were illustrated by two experiments and one case study including the synthetic data sets and KOMPSAT-1 EOC images. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed methods can effectively estimate the model parameters and the threshold value determined shows the minimum overall error.

  • Crime occurs differently based on not only place locations and building uses but also the characteristics of the people who use the place and the spatial structures of the buildings and locations. Therefore, if spatial big data, which contain spatial and regional properties, can be utilized, proper crime prevention measures can be enacted. Recently, with the advent of big data and the revolutionary intelligent information era, predictive policing has emerged as a new paradigm for police activities. Based on 7420 actual crime incidents occurring over three years in a typical provincial city, "J city," this study identified the areas in which crimes occurred and predicted risky areas. Spatial regression analysis was performed using spatial big data about only physical and environmental variables. Based on the results, using the street width, average number of building floors, building coverage ratio, the type of use of the first floor (Type II neighborhood living facility, commercial facility, pleasure use, or residential use), this study established a Crime Incident Prediction Model (CIPM) based on Bayesian probability theory. As a result, it was found that the model was suitable for crime prediction because the overlap analysis with the actual crime areas and the receiver operating characteristic curve (Roc curve), which evaluated the accuracy of the model, showed an area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.8. It was also found that a block where the commercial and entertainment facilities were concentrated, a block where the number of building floors is high, and a block where the commercial, entertainment, residential facilities are mixed are high-risk areas. This study provides a meaningful step forward to the development of a crime prediction model, unlike previous studies that explored the spatial distribution of crime and the factors influencing crime occurrence.

  • Anomalous propagation echo is a kind of abnormal radar signal occurred by irregularly refracted radar beam caused by temperature or humidity. The echo frequently appears in ground-based weather radar due to its observation principle and disturb weather forecasting process. In order to improve accuracy of weather forecasting, it is important to analyze radar data precisely. Therefore, there are several ongoing researches about identifying the anomalous propagation echo with data mining techniques. This paper conducts researches about implementation of classification method which can separate the anomalous propagation echo in the raw radar data using naive Bayes classifier with various kinds of observation results. Considering that collected data has a class imbalanced problem, this paper includes SMOTE method. It is confirmed that the fine classification results are derived by the suggested classifier with balanced dataset using actual appearance cases of the echo.

  • Extraction of texts from images is a fundamental and important problem to understand the images. This paper suggests a text region verification method by statistical means of stroke features of the characters. The method extracts 36 dimensional features from $16\times16$sized text and non-text images using wavelet transform - these 36 dimensional features express stroke and direction of characters - and select 12 sub-features out of 36 dimensional features which yield adequate separation between classes. After selecting the features, SVM trains the selected features. For the verification of the text region, each $16\times16$image block is scanned and classified as text or non-text. Then, the text region is finally decided as text region or non-text region. The proposed method is able to verify text regions which can hardly be distin guished.

  • This paper proposes a robust hand segmentation method using view-invariant characteristic of a wrist-mounted camera, and deals with a hand shape recognition system based on segmented hand information. We actively utilize the advantage of the proposed camera device that provides view-invariant images physically, and segment hand region using a Bayesian rule based on adaptive histograms. We construct HSV histograms from RGB histograms, and update HSV histograms using hand region information from a current image. We also propose a user adaptation method by which hand models gradually approach user-dependent models from user-independent models as the user uses the system. The proposed method was evaluated using 16 Korean manual alphabet, and we obtained increases of 27.91% in recognition success rate.
