  • This paper introduces a step motor with a passively levitated rotor which comprises a homopolar step motor and a passive magnetic bearing. Compared with conventional self-bearing motors which are mostly based on the active magnetic bearing technology, the proposed motor has a very simple structure and operating principle. For the levitation, it works just like passive magnetic bearings which use the repulsive force between permanent magnets. Halbach array is used to increase the bearing stiffness. On the other hand, its rotation principle is just the same with that of conventional motors. In this paper, we introduce the design scheme to avoid the flux interference possibly produced by electromagnets and permanent magnets, and show some results of FEM analysis to predict the performance of the proposed motor.

  • This paper introduces a new self-bearing motor which combines a homopolar step motor and a passive magnetic bearing. Compared with conventional self-bearing motors which are mostly based on the theory of active magnetic bearings and therefore have some difficulties in design of the complicated flux distribution and control of the levitation force and the torque independently, the proposed self-bearing motor has a very simple and novel structure and operating principle. for the levitation, it works just like passive magnetic bearings which use the repulsive force between permanent magnets. On the other hand, its rotation principle is quite similar to that of a conventional homopolar step motor. In this paper, we introduce the basic structure and the operating principle in detail, and show some results of FEM analysis to predict the performance of the proposed self-bearing motor and further, to get the optimal design parameters.

  • Switching controllers for active magnetic bearings are claimed to minimize the copper losses because they do not use bias currents. In this study, we compare the performances of the switching controller with those of the widely used proportional-derivative (PD) controller. The PD controller is combined with a synchronous notch filter to reduce the effect of the unbalance disturbance. For a fair and objective comparison, the PD controller is designed systematically. The switching controller is designed so that the dynamics of the two controllers are almost identical. A system model is developed. This model includes the flexible modes of the rotor and the dynamics of the sensors and amplifiers. The simulation results show that the switching controller indeed reduces the copper loss at lower speeds. However, it fails to operate around the speed close to the bending mode of the rotor.

  • After we designed Bearingless rotor hub system for 7,000lb class helicopter, flexbeam fatigue analysis was conducted for validation of requirement life time 8,000 hours. sectional structural analysis method applying elastic beam model was used. Fatigue analysis for two sections of flexbeam which were expected to weak to fatigue damage from result of static analysis was conducted. Extension, bending and torsion stiffness of flexbeam section shape was calculated using VABS for structure analysis. S-N curve of two composite material which composed flexbeam was generated using wohler equation. Load analysis of bearingless rotor system was conducted using CAMRAD II and load analysis result was applied HELIX/FELIX standard load spectrum to generate bearingless rotor system load spectrum which was used flexbeam fatigue safe life analysis.

  • The cage of a tapered roller bearing keeps the gap between the rollers, which prevents friction, wear and suppresses heating. The material of the cage is changing from metal to plastic for lightening the weight. If the cage is severely deformed due to resonance, the roller may not be able to roll and even get off the cage. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of the cage is analyzed according to the cage material. Under the assumption that a train runs at the highest speed, frequency harmonics of that speed is calculated, and the comparative analysis is carried out in order to select the optimum thickness of the cage, which is easy to change among the cage design variables for avoiding the resonance.

  • An investigation was performed to study the predicting the joint strength of mechanical fasteners. Bearing failure is most important failure mode for designing joint. So in this study, the prediction method in consideration with bearing failure was chosen. In the proposed method, the characteristic length is combined with the Yamada-Sun failure criterion, Tsai-Hill failure criterion and characteristic length for Tension and Compression is determined from investigation. Especially the length of compression is determined from the "bearing failure test" that newly conceived to take bearing failure into consideration. The proposed prediction method was applied to quasi-isotropic carbon/epoxy joint showing net-tension and bearing failure experimentally. Good agreement was found between the predicted and experimental result for each joint geometry. geometry.

  • In order to meet the service life of planetary gearbox, a planet bearing, well known as the component with the highest failure rate, is designed. To predict the bearing fatigue life, ISO standard(ISO/TS 16281) is used, and the design parameters of the bearing are optimized using a parametric method. The whole planetary gearbox model is developed using a commercial software to calculate loads acting on planet bearings accurately. The results state that the designed bearings are satisfied with the life of 15,000hours, and the bearings that consist of 22rollers of 58mm have 1.6times longer life and better load sharing relatively than 22rollers of 28.5mm. Also, the increase in preload of taper roller bearings on the output pinion shaft prolongs the life of planet bearings regardless of roller's length.

  • Micro drilling by high-speed air bearing spindle is very useful manufacturing technology in electronic industry For the design of high speed air bearing spindle, there are considered stability of air bearing spindle, allowable load of air bearing, run out and tooling system design for micro drill's attach and remove. According to suggested details, we designed and manufactured high-speed air bearing spindle and carried out performance estimation such as run out, temperature change in running air bearing spindle, stiffness, chucking torque. Results are follows; Run out was measured under $5{\mu}m$ at air bearing spindle revolution $20,000\sim125,000rpm$. High speed air bearing spindle's temperature rose about $20^{\circ}C$ after 5 minutes from running and then was fixed. Allowable thrust load of spindle was 17kgf. Chucking torque of collet was 15kgfcm.

  • In this study, aerodynamic drag of a bearingless rotor hub was predicted by computational fluid dynamics methodology using unstructured overset mixed meshes. The calculated results showed that the drag due to pressure forces rather than the viscous drag act as a major factor on both the fuselage and rotor hub, and the drag acting on the torque tube accounted for the largest portion in the hub drag. It was also found the hub drag accounted for 39 ~ 41% of the fuselage drag. Finally, the result confirmed the drag of the designed rotor hub satisfied the requirement of the aerodynamic hub drag by comparing with the drag trend of developed helicopter.
