가스 포일 베어링 범프 구조의 1 자유도 가진/가압 실험을 통한 주파수 의존 동특성 규명 (Identification of Frequency-Dependent Dynamic Characteristics of a Bump Structure for Gas-Foil Bearings via 1-DOF Shaker Tests Under Air Pressurization)

  • 최근 회전 시스템의 고속화 경향에 따라 회전체 동역학적 안정성의 중요성이 부각되었다. 고속회전 시스템에 적용되는 가스베어링의 동특성을 규명하는 것은 회전체의 거동을 예측하는데 상당히 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 대표적인 가스베어링인 가스포일베어링의 범프 구조에 대하여 가진실험을 수행하고 가진 주파수에 따른 동특성을 측정하였다. 실험 결과, 범프 구조의 강성은 주파수에 따라 증가하였고 감쇠는 감소하였다. 또한, 가압 조건에서의 동특성은 범프 구조의 동특성 보다 낮은 값을 가졌다. 본 실험을 통해 범프 구조의 주파수 의존 동특성의 경향을 파악하였으며 가스포일베어링의 동특성에 윤활막이 미치는 영향에 대해 확인하였다. 또한 두 가지 동특성 계산 방법을 제시하여 실험결과를 통해 효과 적인 동특성 계산 방법에 대해 비교 고찰하고 범프 구조와 윤활막의 동특성을 비교 하였다.

  • This paper presents the theoretical model to investigate the effect of Coulomb damping in the sub-structure of a foil bearing. Foil deflection is restricted by friction of bumps. Equivalent viscous damping of the bump foils is derived from the Coulomb friction. Dynamic equation of the bumps is constituted by stiffness and damping terms. This point give the difference from Heshmat's frictionless and simple compliance bump model. The fluid is modeled with the compressible Reynolds equation. A perturbation approach is used to determine the static and dynamic performance of the bearing from the coupled fluid-structural model. The analysis result shows that the static and dynamic performance is enhanced by bump friction. This analysis technique would be extended to development of a high performance bearing.

  • This paper presents modeling and simulation of the bump foil bearings with consideration of the elastic behavior of the foil and gas compressibility. Heshmat had originally introduced the simple compliance model to estimate the EHL(elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication) performance. But this approach can not consider the deflection of top foil at the edge of bearing, so model is insufficient to analyze in case that the eccentricity ratio is greater than I. So the top foil is considered as a simple beam model supported by linear spring elements, and the bump foil deflection can be simple compliance model. The EHL calculations are performed for convention rigid type, classical foil type, variable pitch type and double bump type toil bearings. This paper presents that 2nd or 3rd generation bearings have excellent performance in every speeds.

  • Air foil bearing supports the rotating journal using hydrodynamic force generated at thin air film. The bearing performance, stiffness, damping coefficient and load capacity, depends on the rotating speed and the performance of the elastic foundation, bump foil. The main focus of this study is to decide the dynamic performance of corrugated bump foil, structural stiffness and Coulomb damping caused by friction between bump foil and top foil/bump foil and housing. Structural stiffness is determined by the bump shape (bump height, pitch and bump thickness), dry-friction, and interacting force filed up to fixed end. So, the change of the characteristics was considered as the parameters change. The air foil bearing specification for analysis follows the general size; diameter 38.1 mm and length 38.1mm (L/D=1.0). The results show that the stiffness at the fixed end is more than the stiffness at the free end, Coulomb damping is more at the fixed end due to the small displacement, and two dynamic characteristics are dependent on each other.

  • In this paper the effect of bump compliance, load, and the number of pad on the lift-off speed is studied. When the load is greater and bump compliance lower, the shaft is lifted off at higher rotating speed. And when the load is applied near the center of pad, lift-off speed is lower. When the number of pad increases, the lift-off speed is higher. The lift-off characteristics can be used to lengthen the life time of the coating and design the rotating machinery supported by bump bearings.

  • This paper deals with friction effects on the performance of double-bumped AFBs. The stiffness and damping coefficients of the double bump vary depending on the external load and its friction coefficient. The double bump can be either in the single or double active region depending on vertical deflection. The equivalent stiffness and damping coefficients of the bump system are derived from the vertical and horizontal deflection of the bump, including the friction effect. A static and dynamic performance analysis is carried out by using the finite difference method and the perturbation technique. The results of the performance analysis for a double-bumped AFB are compared with those obtained for a single-bumped AFB. This paper successfully proves that a double bumped AFB has higher load capacity, stiffness, and damping than a single-bumped AFB in a heavily loaded condition.

  • The feasibility of an oil-free, motor-driven, two-stage centrifugal compressor supported by air bump bearings is investigated. This centrifugal compressor is driven by a 75 kW motor at an operating speed of 39,000 RPM, and a pressure ratio of the compressor is set up to 4. The analysis is performed by using bearing equilibrium position, heaving stillness, Campbell diagram, unbalance response, and stability. It is demonstrated in this paper that air bump bearings can be adopted well to an oil-free, motor-driven, centrifugal compressor. Specially, Cu-coated bump bearings have enough damping force to reduce a synchronous unbalance for rigid modes of the two-stage compressor. Futhermore, this concept may be applied to the flexible rotor system such as high speed turbomachinery with a super critical speed.

This centrifugal compressor is driven by 75kW motor at an operating speed of 39,000RPM md a pressure ratio of the compressor is up to 4. The analysis is performed, based upon bearing equilibrium position, bearing stiffness, Campbell diagram, unbalance response and stability. It is demonstrated in this paper that air bump bearings can be adopted well to a oil-free motor-driven centrifugal compressor.
