  • A bumper beam plays the important role of absorbing the bulk of bumper impact energy, so it is extremely important to determine the bumper beam section during the initial stage of car development process. This paper uses the Intermediate Response Surface Models (IRSM) technique for the bumper beam section optimization. By using this method, the nonlinear impact force-deflection curve is changed to an approximated curve. This can avoid the excessive 3D nonlinear FEM analysis during the optimization process. Then, the accuracy of the IRSM models is examined by comparing their results with those of the 3D nonlinear FEM. Finally it is shown that the proposed approach is effective to design the 2.5mph vehicle bumper section.

  • In this paper, the automotive beam using aluminium foam is designed and the impact analysis is carried out. The analysis model is the beam of actual size with B- type section structure. At the frontal crash of low speed, ANSYS AUTODYN is used by predicting the behavior of deformation and its internal energy. By the use of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy, the weight is reduced as much as 55% than steel. The deformation at the bumper foam of aluminum is similar with that of steel and the impact energy reduction at aluminum is more than steel. The foam filled with aluminum as much as 50 % has more impact energy absorption than the completely filled aluminum foam.

  • To design ship channel is one of important factors for planning and developing a port. Bends in channel should be avoided if possible, but the channel should be widened, if channel bend is unavoided, to account widened path of a ship in bend for the safe passage of a ship. In this study, Variable Bumper Area(VBA) model is applied to determine ship channel width in bend and channel-bend geometry. The result of this study shows that the width of a channel in bend may be designed as wide as the width in straight lane provided the angle of deflection is less than 30 degree, should be widened for 60degree deflection based on the length of the largest ship using the channel and the angle of deflection.

  • To design ship channels is one of important factors for planning and developing a port. Bends in channels should be avoided if possible, but the channel should be widened, if channel bend is unavoidable, considering the swept path of a ship for safe passage. In this study, Variable Bumper Area(VBA) model is applied to determine the channel widths in bends. The result of this study shows that the width of the bend may be designed as nearly same size of that in straight channel in case that the angle of deflection is less than 30 degrees, and that of the bend with 60 degrees deflection should be widened based on the length of the largest ship using the channel and the angle of deflection.

  • The front bumper of bobsleigh is mounted to alleviate the impact, but the air resistance to the bobsleigh depends on the body shape positioned in front. This study was conducted the flow analyses about three kinds of bobsleigh configurations. Models B and C with the sharp type of the front can reduce the air resistance than model A with the round type of the front. And the type that the back of the bumper narrows can generate a flow smoother than the one widening. It is thought that the results of this study can be devoted at ensuring the body design to reduce the flow resistance most at bobsleigh. As the design data with the durability of bobsleigh obtained on the basis of this study result are utilized, the esthetic sense can be shown by being grafted onto the machine or structure at real life.

  • In this study, the PIC design method with machine learning that automatically assigning different stacking sequences according to loading types was applied bumper beam. The input value and labels of the training data for applying machine learning were defined as coordinates and loading types of reference elements that are part of the total elements, respectively. In order to compare the 2D and 3D implementation method, which are methods of representing coordinate value, training data were generated, and machine learning models were trained with each method. The 2D implementation method is divided FE model into each face and generating learning data and training machine learning models accordingly. The 3D implementation method is training one machine learning model by generating training data from the entire finite element model. The hyperparameter were tuned to optimal values through the Bayesian algorithm, and the k-NN classification method showed the highest prediction rate and AUC-ROC among the tuned models. The 3D implementation method revealed higher performance than the 2D implementation method. The loading type data predicted through the machine learning model were mapped to the finite element model and comparatively verified through FE analysis. It was found that 3D implementation PIC bumper beam was superior to 2D implementation and uni-stacking sequence composite bumper.

  • Analysis of the aerodynamic performance of a bobsleigh has been performed for various types of bobsleigh body shape. To analyze the aerodynamic performance of the bobsleigh, three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stoke equations were used with the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model as a turbulence closure. Grid structure was composed of unstructured tetrahedral grids. The radii of curvature of cowling, and height and length of front bumper at the tip on the drag coefficient were selected as geometric parameters. And, the effects of these parameters on the aerodynamic performance, i.e., the drag coefficient, were evaluated. The results shows that the aerodynamic performance is significantly affected by the height of front bumper and radius of curvature.

  • An color sorting technique was introduced to recycle End-of-life automobile shredded bumpers. The color sorting is a innovate method of separating the differences in the color of materials which are difficult to separate in gravity and size classification by using a camera and an image process technique. Experiments were planned and optimal conditions were derived by applying BBD (Box-Behnken Design) in the reaction surface method. The effects of color sensitivity, feed rate and sample size were analyzed, and a second-order reaction model was obtained based on the analysis of regression and statistical methods and $R^2$ and p-value were 99.56% and < 0.001. Optimum recovery was 94.1% under the conditions of color sensitivity, feed rate and particle size of 32%, 200 kg/h, and 33 mm respectively. The recovery of actual experiment was 93.8%. The experimental data agreed well with the predicted value and confirmed that the model was appropriate.

  • Recently, aluminum is widely used to reduce the vehicle weight. Aluminum curved extruded products are used for the design of automotive frame parts. This study focuses on the determination of process condition fur automotive bumper beam with various curvatures. In this study, a curvature prediction model has been proposed considering the geometric relationship and the characteristic of the curvature extrusion equipment. Using the proposed model and FE analysis, the appropriated process condition was determined to produce the bumper beam. Finally, curvature extrusion experiment was carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed curvature prediction model and the process condition.

  • RCAR low speed impact test estimates repair cost of the impacted vehicle. In this study, for a mid-size vehicle front body model, structural performance for RCAR low speed impact were analyzed with changing the bumper stay shape and size. First, for improving the impact load transfer mechanism to side member the stay rear section shape at connecting area with side member was modified and the stay outer was redesigned to be normal to the barrier. Next, the investigation on stay thickness effect was carried out and the performances of several models with different forming shape were compared. The final design showed 13mm decrease in the maximum barrier intrusion distance and greatly reduced side member deformation. Additional analyses explained the validity of the final design.
