  • This study was performed to analyze the possibility of using Korean native Aster koraiensis Nakai for phytoremediation at various fields. A. koraiensis was cultivated at paddy, upland and forest soils contaminated with heavy metals. After 8 weeks of cultivation, and growth and its absorbing capacity of heavy metals were analyzed. The results showed that A. koraiensis was grown well even at the soil highly contaminated with heavy metals, which means it has a tolerance to heavy metals. As analysis results of arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead and zinc contents absorbed from various soils contaminated with heavy metals, heavy metal absorbing capacity of A. koraiensis was depending on the heavy metal contents in the soils and soil property. In case of arsenic, cadmium and copper, heavy metal accumulation capacities of Aster koraiensis were much influenced by contents of heavy metals in the soils. Absorbing capacity of plants was increased when heavy metal contents in the soils were high. Lead absorbing capacity was depending more on soil property than lead contents in the soil, and was great at sandy soil of forest. Zinc absorbing capacity was influenced by both soil properties and Zn contents in the soil, was increased at paddy soil contaminated with high concentrations of heavy metals and upland soils. In general, A. koraiensis had a tolerance to heavy metals and showed great absorbing capability of heavy metals. So A. koraiensis can be used as a good landscape material for phytoremediation at various soils contaminated with heavy metals.

  • This study was selected drought tolerant plants, by observing the physiological characteristics and biochemical materials from the 9 kinds of the Compositae plants. After selecting plants of the similar size, and then drought stress was induced by the irrigation stopping. Survival rates, chlorophyll values, relative water content(RWC), excised-leaf water loss(ELWL), proline, reducing sugar were measured after 30 days of stopping irrigation. The species that had high rates of survival were Ainsliaea acerifolia Sch. Bip, Aster koraiensis, Aster scaber, Dendranthema zawadskii(S), however other 5 species were dead. The remaining factors have been determined based on plant species showed a higher survival rate. However, chlorophyll content showed high values in A. acerifolia, A.altaicus var. uchiyamae, A. koraiensis, and will have been determined that has no correlation with survival rates, except for A. acerifolia and A. koraiensis. On the other hand, A. scaber, A. acerifolia, A. koraiensis were determined to be relatively high drought tolerant plants in RWC, ELWL, proline, reducing sugar, it showed a similar correlation with survival rate. As a result of 9 kinds of the Compositae plants A. scaber, A. acerifolia, A. koraiensis were considered relatively higher drought tolerant plants.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the chlorophyll content, photosynthetic characteristics, and growth characteristics of Aster koraiensis and Dendranthema zawadskii var. latiloba according to shading treatment. A. koraiensis and D. zawadskii grew in four different shading treatment plots (0%, 50%, 75% and 95% of full sunlight) for experiments. It was found that as the shading level increased, the total chlorophyll content increased and dark respiration decreased in both A. koraiensis and D. zawadskii, indicating that A. koraiensis and D. zawadskii increase the utilization efficiency for photosynthesis under low light conditions. In addition, as the shading level increased, the net apparent quantum yield increased, resulting in the highest in the 95% shading plot, but the highest photosynthetic rate, water use efficiency, and leaf mass per area (LMA) were shown in the control group than in the shading treatments. The results showed that A. koraiensis and D. zawadskii are heliophytes showing plasticity to light, and if the light is restricted to continue to shade, it may be detrimental to growth. For healthy growth, it is considered suitable to grow A. koraiensis under full light conditions, and D. zawadskii under the light condition that blocks 0-50% of full sunlight.

  • This study was conducted to clarify the effects of the different concentration of the nutrient solution on the early growth and the nutritional contents of hydroponically grown Aster koraiensis, Hemerocallis fulva and Plantago asiatica at 70 days after transplanting in perlite culture. Balanced nutrient solution formulated by Japanese Horticultural Experiment Station was used as the standard concentration of the nutrient solution. Overall plant growth of Aster koraiensis and Hemerocallis fulva such as plant height, stem diameter, number of loaves, fresh and dry shoot and root weight were significantly increased in 1.5 times concentration of nutrient solution. Shoot and root fresh and dry weight of hydroponically grown Plantago asiatica were significantly increased in the higher concentration of the nutrient solution, however, number of loaves and root length were significantly increased in the standard and the lower concentration of the nutrient solution. The highest contents of calcium, magnesium and sodium in plants were shown in Aster koraienxis which were grown in the 1.5 times concentration of nutrient solution, and Hemerocallis fulva and Plantago asiatica in 0.25 times of that. The contents of potassium in Aster koraiensis and Hemerocallis fulva were significantly increased when the plants were grown in the 0.5 times concentration of the nutrient solution, and that in Plantago asiatica in the 1.5 times concentration of the nutrient solution. The contents of phosphoric acid in plants as affected by the different species of Namul and the different concentration of the nutrient solution were not significant.

  • This experiment was conducted to improve postharvest quality and extended vase life of Korean native Aster koraiensis Nakai for use as cut flowers. Aster koraiensis Nakai cut flowers were treated with various pretreatment and holding solution. Postharvest pretreatment with 3% sucrose + $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQC + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;AgNO_3$ + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA and 3% sucrose + $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQC + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;AgNO_3$ + $150mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ citric acid for 16 hours extended vase life of cut Aster koraiensis Nakai flowers by 1.4 times as compared with the control (distilled water). Holding solution of 3% sucrose + $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQC + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;AgNO_3$ + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA and 3% sucrose + $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ HQC + $50mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;AgNO_3$ + $150mg{\cdot}L^{-1}\;GA_3$ extended vase life of cut Aster koraiensis Nakai flowers by1.6 and 1.7 times as compared with control (distilled water). Aster koraiensis Nakai.flowers held in this preservative solution increased fresh weight and were maintained positive water balance for a long vase period. It was suggested that the vase life of cut Aster koraiensis Nakai flowers was closely related to fresh weight and water balance of the cut flower.

  • In this study, 10 species of plants with high adaptability to aquatic environments were compared for selecting plant species suitable for vegetation-based low impact development (LID) facilities. The flooding tolerances of the plants were tested by analyzing their growth status under half-immersion and full-immersion conditions, with varying durations of immersion. In decreasing order of flooding tolerance, the comparative analysis of plant height and leaf width is as follows: Hemerocallis fulva, Juncus effusus var. decipiens, Iris pseudoacorus, Phragmites communis TRIN, Typha orientalis C.Presl, Aster koraiensis Nakai, Iris sanguinea, Equisetum hyemale, Acorus calamus. Specifically, Hemerocallis fulva, Juncus effusus var. decipiens. Iris pseudoacorus showed excellent growth status under both immersion conditions. Iris sanguinea and Equisetum hyemale. withered to death by around day 27 of the experiment, but their flooding tolerance was confirmed to be relatively high. Iris pseudoacoru showed flooding tolerance under the half-immersion condition unlike under the full-immersion condition, when compared on day 21 of the experiment. Aster koraiensis Nakai also thrived better under the half-immersion condition, proving to be a highly immersion-resistant species. On the basis of the results of this experiment, Hemerocallis fulva, Juncus effusus var. decipiens and Iris pseudoacorus, Typha orientalis C.Presl were selected as species suitable for vegetation-based LID facilities.
