Predicting the Goshawk's habitat area using Species Distribution Modeling: Case Study area Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea (종분포모형을 이용한 참매의 서식지 예측 -충청북도를 대상으로-)

  • This research aims at identifying the goshawk's possible and replaceable breeding ground by using the MaxEnt prediction model which has so far been insufficiently used in Korea, and providing evidence to expand possible protection areas for the goshawk's breeding for the future. The field research identified 10 goshawk's nests, and 23 appearance points confirmed during the 3rd round of environmental research were used for analysis. 4 geomorphic, 3 environmental, 7 distance, and 9 weather factors were used as model variables. The final environmental variables were selected through non-parametric verification between appearance and non-appearance coordinates identified by random sampling. The final predictive model (MaxEnt) was structured using 10 factors related to breeding ground and 7 factors related to appearance area selected by statistics verification. According to the results of the study, the factor that affected breeding point structure model the most was temperature seasonality, followed by distance from mixforest, density-class on the forest map and relief energy. The nature of the goshawk's breeding environment and habit to breed inside forests were reflected in this modeling that targets breeding points. The northern central area which is about $189.5 km^2$(2.55 %) is expected to be suitable breeding ground. Large cities such as Cheongju and Chungju are located in the southern part of Chungcheongbuk-do whereas the northern part of Chungcheongbuk-do has evenly distributed forests and farmlands, which helps goshawks have a scope of influence and food source to breed. Appearance point modeling predicted an area of $3,071 km^2$(41.38 %) showing a wider ranging habitat than that of the breeding point modeling due to some limitations such as limited moving observation and non-consideration of seasonal changes. When targeting the breeding points, a specific predictive area can be deduced but it is difficult to check the points of nests and it is impossible to reflect the goshawk's behavioral area. On the other hand, when targeting appearance points, a wider ranging area can be covered but it is less accurate compared to predictive breeding point since simple movements and constant use status are not reflected. However, with these results, the goshawk's habitat can be predicted with reasonable accuracy. In particular, it is necessary to apply precise predictive breeding area data based on habitat modeling results when enforcing an environmental evaluation or establishing a development plan.

Ecological Study on Arbuscular Mycorrhizae(AM) at Coastal Reclaimed Lands (해안(海岸) 간척지(干拓地)에서 Arbuscular Mycorrhizae(AM)에 관한 생태학적(生態學的) 연구(硏究))

  • The symbiotic activities of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi(AMF) such as spore density, symbiotic intensity and vesicle density, phytomasses of higher plants such as Calamagrostis epigeios, Imperata cylindria, Artemisia scoparia, Aster tripolium and Sonchus brachyotus and seasonal change of the AMF activities, electric conductivity and zinc contents in plant and soil were determined in the rhizospheres of higher plants at abandoned old coastal reclaimed lands, where constructed in 12 and 30 years ago. If plants of reclaimed land classified to salinity, symbiotic activities of AMF were high in order of obligate halophyte, facultative halophyte and glycophyte. Also, those plants classified to life form, symbiotic activities of AMF were high in order of annual, biennial and perennial plants. Seasonal variation of spore density, one of symbiotic activities showed that the plateau density maintained continuously from the end of growing season of the higher plants to next spring. For this reason, it regarded that reproduction of AMF spore would be formed in autumn, when the higher plants will be developed. Seasonal change of symbiosis intensity, other symbiotic activities, however, showed that the highest symbiosis intensity occurred in spring and summer but the lowest in autumn. In relationships among symbiotic activities, spore density was directry proportional increase of symbiosis intensity. Moreover, phytomass of higher plants also was directly proportional to increase the spore density as well as symbiosis intensity. Vesicle density, however, did not any correlation with the phytomass, spore density and symbiosis intensity. From these results, it can know that both spore density and symbiosis intensity are strongly possible to use as the measure of symbiotic activity owing to symbiosis of tho-AMF, the more absorption of zinc by the higher plants carried out the less concentration of zinc in the soil.

  • To study ecological characteristics of Sagitiaria pygmaea and Sagittaria trifolia occurring in Korea their propagules were collected from 3 locations (Sagittaria pygmaea: Chuncheon, Suweon, Milyang; Sagittaria trifolia: Suweon, Iri, Jeonju) in 1981, cultured and replanted 4 times (May 20, June 5, June 20, July 5) in 1982. Sagitraria pygmaea from Suweon flowered earlier than those from Chuncheon and Milyang in the plants planted on May 20, but this was reversed in another planting dates. Three storied inflorescence was observed newly in Sagittaria pygmaea. Sagittaria pygmaea from Iri and Jeonju had more number of tillers, but less number of tubers per tiller than those from Suweon. Sagittaria rrifolia from Chuncheon flowered earlier than those from Suweon and Milyang. Sagirtaria trifolia from Milyang was narrower in the upper leaf width and less in the number of tubers per plant than those from Chuncheon and Suweon. Each of local collections may be regarded as different ecotype based on the above differences.

Study on the Protection and Management of bird community in Sobaeksan National Park (소백산 국립공원내 조류 군집의 보호 및 관리에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to investigate bird community and to suggest a proper way how to manage and protect bird community in Sobaeksan National Park. The survey was carried over 3 main trail districts by line transect method to figure out influence factor of inhabitation of wild birds from February to October in 1992. The study results as follows: The observed birds were belong to 9 orders l2 families 58 species, they also have Sparrow Hawk dccipiter nisus, Kestrel Faleo tinnunculus(natural monument no. 323). Scops Owl I'otus scops(natural monument no. :324), Black Woodpecker Dryoaepus martius(natural monument no. 242. R). White-backed Woodpecker Dendroaepos leuotes(R) and Gray-backed Thrush Turdus hortulorum(R). These birds a]so classified into 31 species for residents. 17 species for summer visitor, 6 species for winter visitor. 4 species for passage migrant, respectively. Species richness was 38 species at spry, 33 species at summer. 26 species at autumn and 22 species at winter. The density was 3.00 ea /ha at spring, 2.37 ea /ha at summer, 3.62 ea /ha at autumn and 2.88 ea /ha at winter. Breeding bird community in Sobaeksan National Park was dominated by Hole, Bush-nesting guild and Canopy-foraging guild. Natural vegetation of 900m altitude in 1st section and the grassy plain in 2nd section are to be protected absolutely for the habituation of wild birds. Species richness in 3rd section was higher than any other section owe to a various habitat such as valley. open lands, orchid, farm land and forest etc. Food plants and broad-leaved forest is to be managed for the provision of opulent food resources in autumn and winter, user is to be managed for the successful propagation of wild birds in spring and autumn.

RAPD-SCAR Markers Linked to Medium-Leaf Zoysiagrass Ecotypes (한국잔디 중지 변이개체와 연관된 RAPD-SCAR 마커)

  • Two medium-leaf ecotypes (CY6069, CY6097) belonging to one species (Zoysia japonica) of Korean lawngrasses were selected in sod production fields in Jang Seong, Korea. They were reported to have distinct morphological and growth rate characteristics different from the preferred medium-leaf type zoysiagrass in Korea. This study was conducted to define further the genotypic difference at the molecular level and to develop DNA marker based on the specific DNA fragment. Polymorphic DNA fragments were first explored by using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) primers, which were then converted into PCR-based sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR) markers. The CY6069-specific primer set amplified about 550 bp successfully, while the CY6097 marker produced the expected 690 bp band, by which those markers were nominated by CY6069_550 and CY6069_690 SCARs, respectively. Together with the reported morphological and other phenotypic features, the SCAR markers confirmed in this study will be useful to identify those medium-leaf zoysiagrass genotypes when they are cultivated with other vegetatively propagated warm-season turfgrasses in sod farms.

Studies on Factors Affecting Isolation and Fusion of Protoplasts of Quercus Species (참나무류(類)의 원형질체(原形質體) 분리(分離) 및 융합(融合)에 영향(影響)을 끼치는 요인(要因)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • Factors affecting isolation and fusion of protoplasts of three Quercus species were investigated and procedures for isolation, purification and fusion of protoplasts of the three species were also established. Unhardened leaves and rapidly growing callus cultures were good source of viable protoplasts. The optimum composition of enzyme mixture for rapid isolation of protoplasts from leaf mesophyll tissues and calli was Cellulase Onozuka R-10 (20g/l, Macerozyme R-10(10g/l), Pectinase(250 units/l, $CaCl_2$, $2H_2O$(14mM), $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$(1.8mM), $KNO_3$(1.0mM), $H_3BO_3$(1.0mM), $KH_2PO_4$(0.2mM), KI($1.0{\mu}M$), 1,4-dithiothreitol (0.1mM) and mannitol (0.6M). Optimum density of protoplasts for maximum fusion was $2{\times}10^5/ml$ which was the highest protoplast density given in this study. Optimum concentration and duration of PEG 1450 treatment for inducing fusion appeared to be 29%(W/V) final PEG 1450 concentration and 5-10 minutes, respectively.

  • Acoustic and ichthyoplankton data collected from Shelikof Strait in 1981, 1984 and 1985 were examined to determine spawning ground and period of walleye pollock, Theragra chalcogramma. Walleye pollock in the Gulf of Alaska migrated into Shelikof Strait for spawning during late winter and early spring. They entered Shelikof Strait via the warm and saline deep layer (continental slope water mass) in the southwestern channel, and major fish schools concentrated for spawning along the deep trough (250~300m) in the western part of the central strait. Peak spawning activity occurred there from late March to early April. Peak spawning time and area in Shelikof Strait varied little between years, despite difference in hydrography. Geographical advantages together with some oceanographic phenomena (reduced water transport and reduced mixed layer depth in spring) made that area an optimal spawning ground in the Gulf of Alaska during early April. After early April, spawning intensity decreased rapidly and the spawning area tended to expand to the northeast and southwest.

Effects of weather change, human disturbance and interspecific competition on life-history and migration of wintering Red-crowned cranes (기후변화와 인간의 방해 및 종간경쟁이 두루미 월동생태와 이동에 미치는 영향)

  • It is well documented that physiological and nutritional condition of wintering birds is strongly related to migration success to breeding sites, and also breeding success. However, how abiotic factors during winter affect the migration and breeding successes still remains unclear. Thus, this study developed a dynamic-state-dependent model for wintering life-history to identify the potential impact on the life-history, success to breeding site and breeding success of wintering birds, which are related to temperature fluctuation, interspecific competition and human disturbance at the wintering sites. To find the best-fit-model, we referred to the existing research data on wintering ecology of Red-crowned cranes (Grus japonensis) in Cheolwon, Korea, which is well documented as a long-term wintering study. Our model predicted that the higher temperature fluctuation and a higher rate of human disturbance are negatively related to migration success to breeding sites and their fitness, ultimately breeding success via changing of proportion in resource allocation (for e. g., lower energy compensation or higher level of stress accumulation). Particularly, the rate of body mass compensation after arrival at wintering sites may be accelerated when there are less temperature fluctuations and a lower rate of human disturbance. In addition, the rate of interspecific competition sharing the wintering foraging sites is negatively related to the rate of body mass compensation. Consequently, we discussed the conservation strategies of wintering birds based on the outcomes of the model.

Evaluation of Six Species Ciliates as a Live Food and Culture Environment for Euplotes sp. (먹이생물로써의 섬모충 6종의 평가와 Euplotes sp.의 배양 환경)

  • Ciliates have the possibility of a new live food in marine finfish culture because of their wide range of body size, thin tell wall, show motility, and fast reproduction rate. In this research, six species of ciliates were isolated from south coast and salt pond in Korea. The fitness of these species as a live food was evaluated in terms of size, motility, suspensibility and cell density. As the result, Euplotes sp. (K-1) was found suitable to be a new live food which might substitute rotifers, Brachionus plintilis and B. rotundiformis in fish larvae culture. The modified $F{\emptyset}yn's$ Erdschreiberd media, MErds-2 with the addition of glycine, glucose and yeast extract increased six times higher growth rate of Euplotes sp. (K-1) than the basic F$\emptyset$yn's Erdschreiberd media. The optimum water temperature, pH and light intensity for this ciliates were $22.5^{\circ}C$, 8 and 2,000 lux, respectively, and its culture environmental range was relatively wide, On the other hand, this ciliate fed baker's yeast, Saccharomyces cererisiae grew up to 1,240 inds./mL with the inocula of 100 inds./mL within 7 days. The results of the study showed that Euplotes sp. (K-1) has a potential to be utilized as a new live food in fish larvae culture.

Nematode-Trapping Fungi Showed Different Predacity among Nematode Species (선충 종류별 4종 포식성곰팡이의 포식력 차이)

  • Nematode-trapping fungi develop trap and consume nematodes are an important part of the subsoil ecosystem and they share a special predator-prey relationship. Four nematode-trapping species, there with adhesive network, Arthrobotrys oligospora, A. sinensis, A. thaumasia and one with constricting ring, Drechslerella brochopaga were collected from soils in Korea and tested their predacity against 12 different nematode species. They were three feeding groups, plant-parasitic (Meloidogyne incognita and Pratylenchus penetrans), fungivorous (Aphelenchus avenae), bacteriovorous (Betlerius sp. and Diplogasteritus sp. in diplogasterid, Panagrolaimus labiatus, P. multidentatus in panagrolaimid, Mesorhabditis irregularis, Pelodera strongyloides and Rhabditis sp., in rhabditid, and Acrobeloides sp. in cephalobid). Results showed that nematode-trapping fungi successfully captured most of nematodes in Petri dish in the group of plant-parasitic nematodes and rhabditids, moderately and variably in other nematodes in 15 days. But it didn't captured A. avenae and Acrobeloides sp. both belongs to c-p group 2. Numbers of Acrobeloides sp. and A. avenae even increased during the test period. The results of this study indicated that nematode-trapping fungi may have specificity among nematode species.
