Development and Application of Subway's Operating Cost Functions with Full Allocation Method (For Seoul, Incheon, Busan and Daegu) (완전배정방법을 이용한 도시철도 운행비용 모형의 정립과 적용 (서울, 인천, 부산, 대구지하철을 중심으로))

  • We may consider the inducement of demand to public transportation as a solution to relieve traffic congestion and pollution. Subway has merits as moving on schedule, transporting more people than bus. But subway is required a vast investment in the early stage of construction has a huge debt. So it runs into red figures, and on this account, services of subway are falling more and more. Development of subway's operation cost function is useful to understand structure of subway's operation and catch the relations of operation cost and actual results. In addition, we can present the policy that is a helpful to the operation as development of operation cost function. But there are short of studies about operation cost deal with a subway comparison with local train. Because local train has many lines and data, on the other hand, subway has one to four lines and less data. Most of previous studies sought the operation cost function of Seoul. So this study aimed to develop and apply the operation cost function of Seoul, Incheon, Busan and Daegu area using full allocation method. In this study, we considered the number of passengers, track-km, train-km, revenue as actual results. By appling the operation cost function, we compared the average cost of each city and confirmed the existence of economies of scale about the number of passengers, train-km.

  • In this study, we analyzed the effect of the Eungam Loop Line of Seoul Subway Line 6 on the sale price of adjacent row and multi-family houses on the accessibility and structural characteristics of subway stations. This study empirically analyzed a total of 17,938 cases from 2006 to 2017 based on data on the sale price of row and multi-family houses. In summary, the results of this study using the Hedonic Price Model are as follows. First, this study confirms that the Eungam Loop Line characteristics have a positive effect on the sale price as it is adjacent to the subway station. It is noteworthy that the sale price of 100-200m segment has a positive effect, and the sale price of Bulgwang station, which has excellent mobility and connectivity with CBD, YBD and GBD, has a positive effect. Second, this study shows the locational characteristics such as distance to bus stop, distance to mart, and distance to school have influence on the sale price. Third, this study finds the land characteristics such as land area, land shape, land facing, and road width, have significant effects on the sale price. Fourth, this study discovers the sale price is also is also affected by building and floor characteristics such as the type of housing, building area, the number of households, building age, elevator, and floor level.

Determinants of Multiplex Movie Theater's Box Office Performance :Focused on Facilities, Trade Area and Location Factors (멀티플렉스 영화관의 보유시설, 상권 및 입지요인이 영화관 매출에 미치는 영향에 대한 탐색적 연구)

  • Korea's film industry has been growing over the last 10 years, and there has been much attention to the antecedents of film box office sales both academic and business communities. So far, previous research which explained success factors of film or movie mainly focused on 3 stages, production, distribution and screening. However, these 3 steps are heavily vertically integrated in Korea's firm industry unlike United States. Almost 130% of movie theaters are multiplex chain and operated by film production companies such as CJ and Lotte Entertainment In this situation, film sales are likely to he affected by movie theaters own facilities or location factors rather than movie contents. Based. on resource-based view and S-C-P paradigm, the authors examined "whether movie theater's facilities factors and trade area factors such as accessibility, competitive situation, and population have effect to movie theater's sales revenues. The results showed that the average occupancy of theater is the most important factor to movie theaters sales in both large and small cities. In large cities, movie theater's facilities factors which included vibration seat special sound system, premium movie theater, VIP lounge are relatively important than trade area factors. In contrast, in small cities, location factors and accessibility are the most important factors to movie theaters sales. We discuss the managerial and theoretical implication for the results and the specific limitations are suggested at the end of the paper.

A Study on the Effects of Urban Public Transportation Retrofitting for Sustainability (지속가능성을 위한 도시 대중교통 레트로핏(Retrofitting) 효과분석)

  • In recent years, it is very difficult to construct and expand new infrastructures in a city center because of long-term low growth and lack of space due to urban overcrowding. So, there is a need to study a variety of Retrofitting techniques and urban applications that can lead to sustainable development while efficiently utilizing existing facilities. 'Retrofit' means a sustainable urban retrofitting as a directed alteration of the structures, formations and systems of existing facilities to improve energy, water and waste efficiencies. In this study, we applied a hierarchical network design technique that can reflect the structural hierarchy of a city to study how to retrofit public transportation routes in Seoul. The hierarchical network design means dividing the hierarchy according to the functions of hubs and connecting different hierarchies to form a hierarchical network. As a result of comparing the application results of various retrofitting scenarios of public transport, the differences of daily PKT and PHT by about 2.6~3.2% less than before the improvement address that the convenience of passengers is increased. Therefore, it is expected that if the route planning is established according to the proposed method, it will increase the number of passengers and the operational efficiency by the improved convenience of public transit passengers.

An Empirical Analysis of Influencing Factors toward Public Transportation Demand Considering Land Use Type Seoul Subway Station Area in Seoul (토지이용유형별 서울시 역세권 대중교통 이용수요 영향인자 실증분석)

  • Even if Seoul City administration improved its public transportation service, transportation model share in seoul has not been increased. Subway user is also decreasing. Therefore, policy transition into TOD(Transit Oriented Development) should be applied in oder to enhance subway modal share. This paper develops a influencing model by using variables of transportation demand and supply. In addition, it provides major influencing factors for users in subway station area and level of transportation supply based on the analysis results. The results show that: first, cluster analysis presents that traffic pattern is proved to be different according to land use characteristics(residence, non-residence); second, main transportation variables such as transferring distance, the number of bus stop, the number of short distant bus lines, and the number of bicycle are more supplied in residential area compared to non-residential areas; third, the number of lines, bus dispatching interval, operating time, and distance between subway stations are more supplied in non-residential areas than residential areas. All in all, the results will be useful for providing priority of considerations in case of decision-making on public transportation policy in subway station area.

  • After conducting demonstration of transportation card for bus from Godeok-dong to Sangil-dong in 1996, due to continuously support for public transportation, the transportation card utilization of metropolitan public transportation passengers is currently going beyond 90%. In the current situation, transportation information system is mainly focused on road operation and control, offer of real time information and research of transportation information system using transportation card data which is differentiated by previous transportation information system is needed to study. This paper compare and analyze transportation information system, which is being used to each country, based on foreign examples of activating use of transportation card then introduce figure of advanced transportation information system which provide decision making feature for improving policy and institution of public transportation based on transportation card data, scientific analysis of passenger information, information of demand forecasting, variation and so on for constructing new route.

  • This study selected blind spot areas for public transportation in four metropolitan cities including Busan, Daegue, Gwangju, and Daejeon. Then this study developed a nested logit model and analyzed the changes of mode choice behaviors after adopting rapid transit system using stated preference(SP) survey. As the study results, blind spot areas have more potential public transportation demand and tendency to shift to public transportation from autos than built-up areas. This study results can be utilized to evaluate demand changes for new rapid transit system in a circular expressway and an arterial highway connecting CBD and surrounding areas. The study results also can be utilized to analyze the potential public transportation demand in the surrounding areas.

Analysis of Factors Affecting Rail Transit Ridership at Urban Rail Stations (도시철도역별 이용수요의 영향요인에 관한 연구)

  • This paper analyzes factors affecting rail transit ridership at urban rail stations of the Daegu Metropolitan City in 2011. Rail transit ridership is analyzed by dividing weekdays and weekends in order that their differences may be observed. The data used in this study includes various explanatory variables, such as floor area which was collected from building ledger and GIS cadastral map, number of bus routes(line) possible to transfer from urban rail transit, number of students enrolled in middle and high schools, and universities located in access areas of rail transit. For this study, multiple regression models are estimated including various explanatory variables affecting rail transit ridership of weekdays and weekends. From the study, the number of statistically significant explanatory variables and the relative effect of each variable are shown to be different between weekdays and weekends.

  • As the need of eco-friendly transportation systems for sustainable development increases, public transport accessibility has been considered as an important element of transportation system design. When analyzing the accessibility, shortest path algorithms can be utilized to reflect the actual movement and we can obtain high resolution accessibility for all other stations on the network with shortest distance and time. This study used the algorithm improved by reflecting the penalty of number of transfers and waiting time of overlapped routes to get the accessibility. KTX Seoul Station is a target place and this algorithm is applied to multi-layer subway bus network of Seoul to calculate the accessibility, therefore this study presented the accessibility of KTX Seoul station by stations.

  • A transit assignment model can forecast the behaviors of transit users. thereby playing an important role In the evaluation of transit policies. Most existing transit assignment models are based on the models for passenger cars; therefore they cannot reflect the specific characteristics of transit modes. In addition most of the existing models are based on a single transit mode (bus or rail), and they cannot forecast the behaviors of transit users in a changing mass transportation system. The goal of this study is to overcome these problems with the exiting models and to develop a more realistic model. The newly developed model is based on mixed transit modes and is a stochastic model that can reflect the different preferences of each transit user for travel time and transfering. Data gathered from the Seoul metropolitan area's smart card are used to calibrate this model. This study is expected to be used for the evaluation of transportation policies and to attribute the development of transit revitalization strategies.
