Assembly U-lines are increasingly accepted in industry, especially just-in-time production systems, for the efficient utilization of workforce. In this paper, we present an integer programming formulation and a branch-and-bound method for balancing the U-line with the objective of minimizing the number of workstations with a fixed cycle time. In the mathematical model, we provide the method that can reduce the number of variables and constraints. The proposed branch-and-bound method searches the optimal solution based on a depth-first-search. To efficiently search for the optimal solutions to the problems, an assignment rule is used in the method. Bounding strategies and dominance rules are also utilized. Some problems require a large amount of computation time to find the optimal solutions. For this reason. some heuristic fathoming rules are also proposed. Extensive experiments with test-bed problems in the literature are carried out to show the performance of the proposed method. The computational results show that our method is promising in solution quality.
Line Balancing is the problem to assign tasks to stations while satisfying some managerial viewpoints. Most researches about the Mixed-Model Line Balancing problems are focused on the minimizing the total processing time or the number of workstations. Independently, some research reports consider the balance issues of the physical workloads on the assembly line. In this paper, we are presenting a new mathematical model to accomplish the line balance considering both the processing time and the workloads at the same time. To this, end, we propose an zero-one integer program problem, and we use the Chebyshev Goal Programming approach as the solution method. Some computational test runs are performed to compare the pay-offs between the processing time and the workloads. And, the test results show us that the reliable balanced work schedules can be obtained through the proposed model.
This paper considers two-sided (left and right side) assembly lines which are often used, especially in assembling large-sized products such as trucks and buses. A large number of exact algorithms and heuristics have been proposed to balance one-sided lines. However, little attention has been paid to balancing two-sided assembly lines. This paper presents an efficient assignment rule for balancing two-sided assembly lines. The rule involves maximizing relatedness and slackness between works. We first investigate the characteristics of two-sided line balancing and devise new measures for the balancing. We in this rule assign workstations a set of tasks rather than an unit task at a time. a priority rule of assigning the sets is proposed. Extensive computational experiments are carried out to make the performance comparison between the proposed rule and existing ones. The computational results show that our rule is promising in solution quality.
This paper presents the development and control of a two wheeled car-like mobile robot using balancing mechanism whose heading control is done by turning the handle. The mobile inverted pendulum is a combined system of a mobile robot and an inverted pendulum system. A sensor fusion technique of low cost sensors such as a gyro sensor and a tilt sensor to measure the balancing angle of the inverted pendulum robot system accurately is implemented. Experimental studies of the trajectory following control task has been conducted by command of steering wheel while balancing.
In this paper, we report a self-balancing robot wheelchair which has the capability of keeping upright posture regardless of the terrain inclination in terms of the three dimensional balancing motion. It has the mobility of five degrees of freedom, where pitching, yawing, and forward motions are generated by the two-wheeled inverted pendulum mechanism and the rolling and vertical motions are implemented by the movement of the tilting mechanism. Several design considerations are suggested for the sliding type vehicle body, wheel actuator module, tilting actuator module, power and control system, and the riding module.
This paper presents an evolutionary algorithm for goal programming with preemptive priority. To do this, an evolutionary strategy is suggested which search for the solution satisfying the goals in the order of the priority. Two-sided assembly line balancing problems with multiple goals are used to validate the applicability of the algorithm. In the problems, three goals are considered in the following priority order: minimizing the number of mated-stations, achieving the goal level of workload smoothness, and maximizing the work relatedness. The proper evolutionary components such as encoding and decoding method, evaluation scheme, and genetic operators, which are specific to the problem being solved, are designed in order to improve the algorithm's performance. The computational result is reported.
