Simultaneous Determination of Traces of Platinum and Rhodium by Differential Pulse Polarograpy (펄스 차이 폴라로그래피법에 의한 미량 백금과 로듐의 동시 정량)

  • Simultaneous measurements of trace platinum and rhodium, based on catalytic reduction of protons by the adsorbed Pt-formazone and Rh-formaldehyde complexes formed in formaldehyde-hydrazine-sulfuric acid medium, were demonstrated. The conditions for the measurements of Pt and Rh both present at trace levels (>10-10 M) were 0.004% (w/v) formaldehyde-0.0012% (w/v) hydrazine-0.75 M sulfuric acid. In this medium method detection limits are 7.3${\times}$10-11 M Pt and 3.2${\times}$10-11 M Rh. And dynamic ranges are 5${\times}$10-10~6${\times}$10-8 M and 1${\times}$10-10∼2${\times}$10-8 M for platinum and rhodium respectively. In the linear dynamic ranges, Rh and Ir interfere platinum in the presence of only 10 and 100 times that of Pt respectively. There are no interferences from other platinum group metal ions for rhodium even in the presence of a 500-fold excess of Ir(IV), a hundredfold excess of platinum.

A Review on Recycling of Spent Autocatalyst in Korea (국내 자동차 폐촉매의 발생 및 재활용 현황)

  • Recycling of spent autocatalyst that includes the platinum group metals (PGMs), namely palladium, platinum and rhodium, is a very profitable endeavor. In order to ensure an efficient promotion of an appropriate policy-making and the technical development of the recycling process of spent autocatalyst in Korea, the generated amount, trading conditions, and recycling technology for spent autocatalyst were surveyed. The generated amount of spent autocatalyst was estimated by analyzing the domestic statistical data of registration & disuse of automobiles and the records of autocatalyst installation to new cars. The review of the recycling technology was carried out by surveying the recycling processes of 'Heesung PMTech Ltd.', which is the largest company in the recycling industry for spent autocatalyst in Korea. In addition to the above, some policy suggestions for the improvement of recycling industries for spent autocatalyst were offered.

Analysis of Changes in Trade Structure of the Raw Materials of Rare Metals in Korea (국내 희유금속 원재료 교역구조 변화 분석 연구)

  • The rare metals used as raw materials in high-tech industries undergo changes in demand structures and supply chains following domestic industrial structural shifts and technological advancements, exhibiting high price volatility. Therefore, it is necessary to periodically analyze changes in the demand structures of rare metals. Since domestic demand for most rare metals relies on imports in Korea, the changes in domestic demand for rare metals can be identified by analyzing changes in their trade structure. In the present study, we analyze the changes in trade volume, trade growth rate, trade rankings, and trading countries from 2000 to 2022 for 35 rare metals, categorized into five types-ores, metals, alloys, compounds, and scrap. The trade of the raw materials of rare metals in Korea has generally increased since the 2000s, except for a significant decline in 2009 and 2016. The total trade volume, encompassing both exports and imports, has increased by approximately tenfold in 2022 compared to 2001. Until the mid-2010s, the trade of the raw materials of rare metals was primarily focused on those used in steel-manufacturing such as silicon, nickel, chrome, molybdenum, manganese, and others. However, after that period, there has been an increase in the trade of platinum group metals like palladium, rhodium, platinum, and the raw materials of rare metals for secondary battery-manufacturing such as lithium and cobalt. Particularly in 2022, lithium has become the largest share in trade of the raw materials of rare metals in Korea, due to the price surge and increase in demand.

Enhancement of Durability of Dimensionally Stable Anode for High-rate Electroplating Applications (고속 전기도금용 불용성 전극의 내구성 향상에 관한 연구)

  • 불용성 전극이 고속 전기도금 공정에 사용되기 위해서는 전기화학 반응이 우수하고, 높은 내구성을 가져야 한다. 불용성 전극의 내구성은 기지층 표면전처리, 금속산화물 조성, 코팅층 두께, 소결 온도 등 다양한 전극제조 공정인자들에 의해 영향을 받는다. 본 연구에서는 불용성 전극의 내구성을 향상시키기 위해 전극 전처리 및 백금족 산화물 조성비의 공정변수로 전극을 제조하였고, 가속수명평가법을 사용하여 전극의 내구성을 평가하였다. 고속 전기도금 공정환경에서는 이리듐(Ir)계 및 탄탈륨(Ta)계 산화물 조성을 가지는 불용성전극의 내구수명이 우수한 경향을 나타내었으며, 귀금속 산화물 코팅층 두께가 얇을수록 불용성전극의 내구수명은 크게 저하되었다. 또한, Ir-Ta 조성 불용성전극의 경우 내구성 향상 기지체 표면전처리를 통해 전극의 내구수명이 10배 이상 향상되었음을 확인하였다.

Recovery of Precious Metals from Waste PCB and Auto Catalyst Using Arc Furnace (귀금속 함유 폐기물로부터 아크로를 이용한 유가금속 회수)

  • Recently, waste printed circuit board (PCB) has significantly increased in its amount due to the rapid development of electronic industries. Since several kinds of noxious materials and also valuable metals are contained in it, the waste PCB is in an urgent need of recycling for the dual purposes for the prevention of environmental pollution and recovery of valuable resources. Also, the catalyst which equipped in the exhaust pipes of automobiles to reduce emission of air pollutants contains precious met-als so that their recovery from the waste auto-catalysts is required. In this study, the recovery of valuable metals from waste PCB and auto-catalyst by arc furnace melting process has been investigated, which is known to be very stable and suitable f3r less production of pollutants due to its high operating temperature. The effect of the kind of flux on the recovery of precious metals was examined by using quicklime, converter slag, and copper slag as the flux. In addition, the influence of direct and alternating current and the applying direction of direct current has been investigated. It was observed that using converter or copper slag as a flux was more desirable for a higher efficiency in the precious metal recovery compared with quicklime. For the effect of current, application of direct current taking the bottom as a negative pole generally showed a better efficiency for the extraction of valuable metals from waste PCB, which was also observed for the case of waste auto-catalyst. The average recovery of precious metals from both wastes by arc furnace melting process was very high, which was up to in the range of 95~97%.

Trace Measurement of Ruthenium by Adsorptive Stripping Voltammetry (벗김 전압전류법에 의한 루테늄의 미량 측정)

  • In the presence of optimum amounts of hydroxylamine, trace ruthenium(III) can be conveniently determined in acidic (boric) media by coupling catalytic hydrogen processes with adsorptive accumulation of the catalyst, using differential pulse voltammetry. Cyclic voltammetry was used to characterize the redox and interfacial processes. Optimal experimental conditions were found to be a stirred borate (0.015 M, pH 2.5) solution containing 0.55 M hydroxylamine, a preconcentration potential of - 0.70 V, and a scan rate of 5 mV/s. With a 7 min accumulation period the detection limit was 3${\times}$10-10 M. The possible interferences by other platinum group metals are investigated.

$UO_2$ 소결펠렛의 건/습식 산화반응 연구

  • 핵연료저장시설의 화재 등 극단적인 사고조건하에서 $UO_2$ 소결펠렛의 습식산화와 건식산화에 대한 연구를 수행하였다. 손상된 지르칼로이 피복관 속의 $UO_2$ 소결펠렛을 산성분위기의 습윤조건하에서 산화시킬 때의 $UO_2$ 펠렛의 산화속도는 IDR(mg/$\textrm{cm}^2$.min) = 1.55 [H$^{+}$]$^{1.21}$ 로 나타났다. 또한 습윤조건하에서 $UO_2$ 분말에 알카리 및 알카리 토금속 산화물, 그리고 백금족 및 회토류 산화물 등과 같은 불순물들이 존재할 때의 산화속도를 조사하였으며 이들에 대한 영향도 관찰하였다. 핵연료저장시설의 가상화재를 바탕으로 한 400~$700^{\circ}C$의 온도범위에서, 피복관이 씌워진 $UO_2$ 소결펠렛의 건식산화반응을 조사한 바 $UO_2$ 소결펠렛은 산화초기에 U$_4$O$_{9}$ 또는 U$_3$O$_{7}$ 등의 중간상 형성에 따른 3-4%의 부피축소에 의해 결정립계 균열이 일어나고, $600^{\circ}C$ 이하에서는 온도증가에 따라 중간상에서 U$_3$O$_{8}$ 상으로의 상변화에 의한 부피팽창으로 피복관의 변형과 함께 산화속도의 가속을 발견할 수 있었고, $600^{\circ}C$ 이상에서는 핵연료소자의 소성변형으로 인한 산화속도의 지연을 발견할 수 있었다. 또한 $UO_2$ 펠렛의 건식산화거동은 기체-고체 반응시의 전형적인 형태인 shrinking core model에 잘 적용될 것으로 판단되었다.

Platinum complex oxide electrode catalyst for the solubilization of sewage sludge (하수슬러지 가용화 위한 백금족 복합 산화물 촉매 전극 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the electrochemical properties develop DSA electrode for sewage sludge solubilization. Using Ir as a main catalyst, the catalyst selected for the sewage sludge solubilization durability and proceeds to functional electrode suitable for sewage sludge electrolysis experiment were obtained the following results. Less mass reduction of the sintering temperature of the main catalyst, Ir coated electrodes, the endothermic reaction zone $300^{\circ}C$ to $500^{\circ}C$, which was selected from a range of experiments. The efficiency of the catalyst results came up to $350^{\circ}C$ best. Each Binder stars (Ta, Sn, W) in this experiment was the biggest catalyst efficiency at $350^{\circ}C$. Used as a binder, $TaCl_5$, $SnCl_4$, $WCl_6$ of the Ta and without affecting the other characteristics of the main catalyst than Sn, W. For the 50% $IrO_2$ electrode is 1.4 V (vs. Ag / AgCl) in a current of about $29mA/cm^2$ was caused to evaluate the effectiveness of the electrode.

The Catalytic Reduction of Carbon Dioxide by Butane over Nickel loaded Catalysts (니켈담지촉매상에서 부탄에 의한 이산화탄소의 환원반응)

  • The direct reaction of carbon dioxide($CO_2$) with butane($C_4H_{10}$) to obtain synthesis gas and hydrocarbon compounds have been studied on nickel loaded catalysts. In the reaction of $CO_2$ with $C_4H_{10}$, Ni loaded catalysts showed similar activity with Pt catalyst and Coke deposition on the catalyst was severe by dehydrogenation of butane. The main products were carbon monoxide and hydrogen, when alumina and Y type zeolite were used as a support. Instead, a great deal of aromatic hydrocarbons were obtained on the Ni loaded ZSM-5 catalyst. The conversion of $CO_2$ increased with the increasing molar ratio of $CO_2$/$C_4H_{10}$ on Ni/ZSM-5, Ni/NaY and Ni/alumina catalyst, but the conversion decreased again from the ratio of 2. The value of $CO_2$ conversion was the highest at the 5wt% of Ni loading on ZSM-5 catalyst. A part of cokes deposited on the catalysts diminished when only $CO_2$ gas or water steam flowed into the reactor. The coke deposited on the catalysts was very reactive and it may be an important intermediate for the carbon dioxide reforming reaction.

Determination of Fission Products in Simulated Nuclear Spent Fuels by Cation.Anion Exchange Chromatography and Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (양.음이온교환 크로마토그래피와 유도결합플라스마 원자방출분광법을 이용한 모의 사용후핵연료 중 핵분열생성물 분석)

  • The simulated nuclear spent fuel (SIMFUEL) containing the platinum group elements which will not be dissolved in a nitric acid was completely dissolved with a acid digestion bomb. The metallic elements separated in the SIMFUEL were measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Because the peaks of metallic elements were spectrally interfered by uranium spectrum, uranium and metallic elements were separated by cation exchange resin for Mo, Pd, Rh and Ru and by anion exchange resin for Ba, Ce, La, Nd, Rh, Sr, Y and Zr, respectively. The recovery of Mo, Pd, Rh and Ru after separation by cation exchange chromatography found to be 99-103% and anion exchange separation showed 96.5-107% of recovery except Y with the simulated solution whose concentration was similar to the spent nuclear fuel. The relative standard deviation of this method showed 1.3-6.7% in the SIMFUEL whose concentrations of metallic elements were between several $10^2-10^3$ppm.
