A Network-Distributed Design Optimization Approach for Aerodynamic Design of a 3-D Wing (3차원 날개 공력설계를 위한 네트워크 분산 설계최적화)

  • An aerodynamic design optimization system for three-dimensional wing was developed as a part of the future MDO framework. The present design optimization system includes four modules such as geometry design, grid generation, flow solver and optimizer. All modules were based on commercial softwares and programmed to have automated execution capability in batch mode utilizing built-in script and journaling. The integration of all modules into the system was accomplished through programming using Visual Basic language. The distributed computational environment based on network communication was established to save computational time especially for time-consuming aerodynamic analyses. The distributed aerodynamic computations were performed in conjunction with the global optimization algorithm of response surface method, instead of using usual parallel computation based on domain decomposition. The application of the design system in the drag minimization problem demonstrated considerably enhanced efficiency of the design process while the final design showed reasonable results of reduced drag.

  • Recently, several prestressed concrete box girder bridges have experienced severe cracking along the tendon path when prestress force has been transferred to the anchorage zone. The purpose of the present study is therefore to explore characteristics of the local stress distribution, to study the effects of section geometry of anchorage zones, i.e., tendon inclination, tendon eccentricity and concrett. cover thickness anti to develop recornrncnd;itions for specific design criteria for post~tensioned a:lchorage zones. 7'0 accomplish these objectives, a cc~mprehen sive nonlinar finite element study has been conducted. From this study, realistic forrnulas for crackinq and ultimate load capacities are proposed. 'These equations reasonably well predict the crackinq and ultimate loads of prestressed concrete anchorage zones.

An Experimental Study on Structural Capacity of Joint Between Composite PHC Wall Pile and Bottom Slab with CT Shear Connector (CT형강 전단연결재가 적용된 합성형 PHC벽체파일-하부슬래브 연결부 성능에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This paper investigated the structural capacity of the CT shear connectors, which is a kind of the perfobond rib and functions as an anchor transferring the tension force in the joint between a composite PHC wall pile and a bottom slab. The direct pull-out test was performed for various specimens. From failure modes and load-displacement curves, it was found that transverse rebars should be placed to holes in a web to restrict pull-out failure of CT shear connectors. The results of additional tests for specimens with transverse rebars and various support lengths indicated that all specimens were failed by the tension failure of PHC pile before pull-out failure of CT shear connector and concrete pull-out failure. Thus, the CT shear connector could endure the tension force between the PHC wall pile and the bottom slab.

Design of Boundary Confinement of Structural Walls (구조벽의 단부 횡보강 설계)

  • For a performance-based design of structural walls, it is necessary to develop a rational design method for determining the length and detail of boundary confinement so as to satisfy the given ductility demand. In the present study, the curvature capacity of a structural wall with boundary confinement was estimated considering the effects of various design parameters. The curvature demand of the plastic hinge corresponding to the given design displacement was also determined. By equalizing the curvature capacity to the demand, a design method for determining the length of boundary confinement, was developed. According to the design method, the length of boundary confinement increases as axial compressive load and design displacement increase, and as concrete strength, wall thickness, amount of lateral reinforcement and aspect ratio decrease. A study was performed on details for effective lateral confinement of walls with rectangular cross-section. Based on the findings, design guidelines on spacings of ties and cross-ties were proposed.

  • A beam is a major load-carrying member in many engineering structures. Beams with properly designed cross sections and stiffeners are required to enhance the structural properties. Such a design may cause various coupling behaviors, and therefore, an accurate analysis is essential for the proper design of beams. In this research, we manufactured box-beams with stiffeners, which mimic the out-of-plane composite bending-shear coupling behavior reported in literature. A modal test is carried out to obtain the dynamic characteristics, such as natural frequencies and mode shapes, of the box-beam. The obtained results are compared with those of 3D FEM, which confirm that the out-of-plane bending-shear coupling behavior reported in literature is possible. The coupling behavior can be controlled by the proper design of the stiffeners.

  • Thermal energy storage (TES) is a technology that stores surplus thermal energy at high or low temperatures for later use when the customer needs it, not just when it is available. TES systems can help balance energy demand and supply and thus improve the overall efficiency of energy systems. Furthermore, the conversion and storage of intermittent renewable resources in the form of thermal energy can help increase the share of renewable resources in the energy mix which refers to the distribution of energy consumption from different sources, and to achieve this, it is essential to combine renewable resources with TES systems. Underground TES using rock caverns, known as cavern thermal energy storage (CTES), is a viable option for large-scale, long-term TES utilization although its applications are limited because of the high construction costs. Furthermore, the heat loss in CTES can significantly be reduced due to the heating of the surrounding rock occurred during long-term TES, which is a distinctive advantage over aboveground TES, in which the heat loss to the surroundings is significantly influenced by climate conditions. In this paper, we introduced important factors that should be considered in the shape and multiple layout design of TES caverns, and proposed guidelines for storage space design.

Analysis of the Discharge Capacity Improvement of a Lock Gate by Using 3-Dimensional Numerical Simulation (3차원 수치모의를 이용한 배수갑문의 방류능력 개선효과 분석)

  • This study showed that numerical simulation can be effectively used to analyze discharge capacity according to the form and arrangement of the lock gate of a tidal power plant. For the numerical simulation, FLOW-3D with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation as a governing equation was used. This study found that improvement of apron length and approach angle of guide wall of the lock gate causes differences in discharge capacity of $10\%$ or more. In addition, there was a difference of discharge capacity caused by the connecting structures of the drainage gate and hydraulic turbine structure and the side slope at the end of apron. This study also showed that hydraulic investigation to enhance a discharge capacity is needed when the lock gate is designed and that numerical model experiments can be a useful analysis tool to design the drainage structure, as well as the hydraulic model experiment.

  • In this paper, the development of unique model of the 2.75 inch rocket propulsion system is described. Recently developed korean 2.75 inch rocket propulsion system shows the improvement of a flame stability resulted from a change in the configuration of propellant grain, and of an incidental ignition protection function using the EMI(electromagnetic interference) filter on ignition system. Moreover it is shown that a directional flight stability is improved by increasing the number of fins and changing the nozzle configuration. Static firing test and thermal shock test were conducted for the validation before flight, and flight test of 210 rounds of rockets was conducted to verify the trajectory uniformity. In addition, intellectual property issues can be overcome with the unique korean 2.75 inch rocket motor as well as the performance improvement.

Fatigue Fracture Analysis of Curved Pipes Under Cyclic Loading (반복 하중에 의한 곡관의 피로 균열 해석)

  • In this study, we numerically analyze fatigue cracks of curved pipes under cyclic loadings. Numerical models of the curved pipes are developed. The models are verified with the experimental results in terms of fatigue lives and development process of the fatigue cracks. Erosion technique is applied to the solid elements in order to describe shapes of the fatigue cracks and estimate the fatigue lives. Also, development of the fatigue cracks is described by allocating sufficient number of solid elements in the radial direction. Fatigue lives and shapes of the crack resulting from numerical analyses show good agreement with those of the experiment considering ${\pm}100mm$ displacement. In addition, estimation of the fatigue life caused by displacement with different magnitude is conducted. We expect that the model can be applied to understand the relation between fatigue lives and characteristics of pipes or loadings.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic displacement system for testing stability of structure. Photogrammetry is a method which can measure accurate 3D data from 2D images taken from different locations and which is suitable for analyzing and measuring the displacement of structure. This paper consists of camera calibration, feature extraction using coded target & retro-reflective circle, 3D reconstruction and analyzing accuracy. Multi-view camera which is used for measuring displacement of structure is placed with different location respectively. Camera calibration calculates trifocal tensor from corresponding points in images, from which Euclidean camera is calculated. Especially, in a step of feature extraction, we utilize sub-pixel method and pattern recognition in order to measure the accurate 3D locations.
