  • This study was proposed in obtaining basic data for an intervention programs of the stable child care by identifying the effects of support from the spouse and family on the child rearing among marriage immigrant women. Subjects consisted of 110 marriage immigrant women in Gyeonggi-do in December, 2014. SPSS/WIN 22.0 program was used for ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and multiple regression analysis to figure out burden and efficacy of child rearing through the general characteristics. The increased burden of child rearing was statistically significant with young age, lower level of education, low income and less spending time to raise their children by husband. Additionally, the increased efficacy of child rearing was statistically significant with young age and using two languages. The pressure of the child rearing showed a negative correlation with spouse support, income, and old age. The efficacy of child rearing had a positive correlation with spouse support, spending time to take care of their children by family, and ages. In the regression analysis, the burden of child rearing among immigrant women increased by old age (${\beta}=-2.097$, p<.05) and less time to raise their children by husband (${\beta}=-2.165$, p<.05). It is important to provide spouse and family support to encourage desirable child rearing behavior. These results may provide to improve intervention programs for child rearing among marriage immigrant women.

  • The population with massive waist circumference is increasing in comparison with that with obesity in entire bodies in Korea. It is assumed that prevalence of obesity is closely related with changes in marriage status such as divorce or separation by death, and age, educational background, diet habits and living environment depending on presence or absence of spouses. To identify whether there are relations between spouse, BMI and waist circumference under the conditions such as life cycle age, educational level, income, smoking, drinking and walking controlled, this study used data of national health and nutrition research organized by Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The subjects of the study were a total of 7,178: 3,043 men and 4,135 women whose ages were above 19 and married. As a result of controlling independent variables except a factor of spouse, there were no statistically significant relations between presence of spouse, waist circumference and BMI in men, but odds rate of waist circumference was lower, 0.78(95% CI 0.636-0.954) when the female subjects had no spouse than when they had spouse.

  • Using data from Korean Longitudinal Study on Aging (KLoSA), this study examines how continuity and change of marital status is associated with health over time among older women, focusing on the moderating effects of age and parent-child relationships. KLoSA data set has two waves of interviews, and for this study, 2046 women aged 65 and over were selected. To analyze data, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used. The major findings are as follows. First, there was no statistically significant difference in health between continuously married older women and continuously single older women. However, older women who had transition from being married to being single showed lower physical health than continuously married and continuously single older women. Second, there were statistically significant differences in the effect of marital status on mental health according to the age of older women. Older women who had transition from being married to being single showed lower mental health than continuously married elders when older women were younger. Third, contact with children moderated the effect of marital status on physical health. Older women who had transition from being married to being single showed lower physical health than continuously single and continuously married older women when older women had less contact with their children. The findings imply after the loss of marital role, older women's relationship with adult children plays a significant role in promoting health. In conclusion, the findings of this study show the different pathways through which marital status is associated with health for 3 different groups of older women, being continuously single, being continuously married, and making transition from being married to being single.

  • This study examined the relationship between oral health behaviors and in senior citizens to determine how to improve their happiness index. The subjects in this study were 260 senior citizens aged 65 years or older, who resided in North Jeolla Province. A survey was conducted from June 17 to 30, 2016. The happiness index of elderly people who brushed their teeth more often and had dental checkups on a regular basis was significantly higher (p<0.05). Evaluation of subfactors associated with quality of life related to oral health showed significant differences in functional disturbances according to gender, age, the presence or absence of a spouse, and the use or nonuse of dentifrice (p<0.05). Physical pain significantly varied with the presence or absence of a spouse, educational level, monthly mean allowance, and regular dental checkups (p<0.05); significant differences were found in psychological discomfort according to gender, tooth brushing frequency, and regular dental checkups (p<0.05). There were significant differences in declining physical capacity according to gender, age, educational level, and monthly mean allowance (p<0.05); waning mental capacity significantly differed with age, living alone or with another person, the presence or absence of a spouse, and regular dental checkups (p<0.05). The factors that influenced the happiness index in senior citizens were age, living alone or with another person, educational level, monthly mean allowance and the Oral Health Impact Profile score (p<0.05). The study showed that measures are needed to improve the quality of life and happiness index in elderly people, including the development of oral health programs for this population.

  • This paper examines the relationship between education and marriage in South Korea, based on a 2 percent data of the 2000 census. The result found strong educational homogamy and wife-hypergamy over the five age cohort, 21-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, and 61-70. For the primary, junior secondary, upper secondary and tertiary educational levels, the chance of marrying within the same educational level was stronger for primary and tertiary education. In terms of trends, the educational homogamy increased across the four cohorts. We note that while upward marriage was stronger for women (hypergamy), it decreased over time.

  • The purpose in this study is to analyze the effect of expected public pension assets (or social security wealth) and retirement incentives on retirement behaviors of two wage earners households. For the purpose of the study, an empirical analysis was conducted. In the empirical step, it was found that the empirical results were significant for men, but not for women namely, statistically asymmetric if behaviors of two couples are interdependent. The cause for the statistically asymmetric results were then determined. The Bivariate Probit model was used for estimation in the first step and the KLIPS(Korean Labor and Income Panel Study) was used as data for estimation. According to the empirical analysis, the results showed statistically significant asymmetry for men, however not for women, in expected public pension assets and other retirement incentives, non-wage assets, age difference, spouse's health status, spouse's monthly wages per hour and aging of their spouse In this study, cause of statistically asymmetric result in asymmetric complementarities of leisure of couples were found, then explained through different methods of comparison from the most recent studies. First, spouse's cross wage elasticity of self leisure demand(retirement) was calculated and determined whether complementarities of leisure of couples is positive or negative. Then, the degree of complementarities of leisure was distinguished in comparison with the relative size of two cross elasticities. Thus, men have relatively strong complementarities of leisure. But for women, it may roughly cancel out due to the substitution effect and the income effect. Therefore, women have relatively weak complementarities of leisure.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the caregiving stress and depression of spouses who support adults with physical disabilities, calculate the activity of daily living (ADL) of the disabled and determine the correlation of each area and the influence of their ADL on the caregiving stress and depression of spouses. This study was performed on 86 spouses of the disabled who were receiving rehabilitation treatment in two hospitals located in S and K cities from July to August 2016. According to the results, the total caregiving stress scores were $71.43{\pm}17.78$ and the economic and psychological stresses among low items were higher than the other items. The total depression score was $50.34{\pm}26.41$, which was slightly higher than the average of normal adults. The caregiving stress and depression were high for aged women, for cases of high caregiving expense and time, for young disabled and for stroke disease. Factors that affected the caregiving stress were the age of the disabled and the duration of their disability; their ADL had no influence on the caregiving stress. The result showed that the depression affected their age, disabled type and grade, and ADL. Actual policy support capable of giving economic, physical, and psychological assistance should be prepared to reduce caregiving stress and depression.

  • This study explores the pattern of socio-demographic characteristics of divorced couples of international marriage in Korea. This paper focuses on analyzing the effect of dissimilarity between husband and wife on the duration of marriage of divorced couples. It examines whether the differences of socioeconomic characteristics of the married couples are linked to different process within their relationships and duration of marriage. Attention is focused on couple's age and education. Micro-data from divorce registration for the period of 1995-2005 are utilized. Results of analyses reveal the following. First, married couples may have different responses to dissimilarity between the partners according to the combination of nationality of the couples. This indicates that cross-border marriage does not represent the same type of union in different societies or cultures. Second, both dissimilarities of age and education show negative impacts on the marital duration of the couples with foreign wives, but there is a difference in its pattern. Age dissimilarity displays higher impacts on the duration. Third, the result also indicates that the contribution of dissimilarity of age and education on marital duration is relatively small among the couples with foreign husbands.
