  • As the interest on the air-pollution is gradually rising up at home and abroad, automotive and fuel researchers have been working on the exhaust emission reduction from vehicles through a lot of approaches, which consist of new engine design, innovative after-treatment systems, using clean (eco-friendly alternative) fuels and fuel quality improvement. This research has brought forward two main issues : exhaust emission and PM (particulate matter) particle emissions of gasoline vehicle. Exhaust emission and PM particle of automotive had many problem that cause of ambient pollution, health effects. In addition, researcher studied the environment problems of the MTBE contained in the fuel as oxygenate additives. The researchers have many data about the health effects of ingestion of MTBE. However, the data support the conclusion that MTBE is a potential human carcinogen at high doses. Based on the oxygenated fuel additive types (MTBE, Bio-ETBE, Bio-ethanol, Bio-butanol), this paper discussed the influence of oxygen contents on gasoline fuel properties and evaporative emission characteristics. Also, this paper assessed the acceleration and power performance of gasoline vehicle for the fuel property.

  • NOx and PM are important air pollutants as vehicle management policy aspect. Medium-duty truck is the main source of the pollutants although the vehicle market share is only 3.5%. National emission portion of NOx and PM form the mobile sourece are 14% and 16% respectively. In this study it was investigated that characteristics of air pollutants emission on medium duty truck equipped with EGR and SCR system. Vehicle's test reflected driving cycle on the chassis dynamometer, and applied test cycle was WHVC(World Harmonized Vehicle Cycle) mode. The test cycle include three segments, represent urban, rural and motorway driving. Based on the test results NOx, PM, HC were less emitted form SCR vehicle than EGR vehicle. And CO was less emitted form EGR vehicle than SCR vehicle due to CO oxidation reaction on DPF surface. And most air pollutants reduced as average vehicle speed increased. Pollutants were less emitted on motorway section than urban and rural sections. But highly NOx emission on motorway section was verified according to increased EGR ratio on fast vehicle speed. HC and CO additional emission was identified as 68%, 58% respectively during SCR vehicle's cold engine start emission test. NOx additional emission was detected by 24% on SCR vehicle's condition of engine cold start while not detected on vehicle equipped with EGR. SCR vehicle's additional NOx emission was derived from low reaction temperature during engine cold start condition. medium-duty truck emission characteristics were investigated in this study and expected to used to improve air pollutants management policy of medium-duty truck equipped with SCR & EGR.

  • Hydrogen has reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the main cause of global warming, and is emerging as an eco-friendly energy source for ships. Hydrogen is a substance with a lower flammability limit (LFL) of 4 to 75% and a high risk of explosion. To be used for ships, it must be sufficiently safe against leaks. In this study, we analyzed the effect of changes in the area of the air inlet / vent port on the ventilation performance when hydrogen leaks occur in the hydrogen tank storage room. The area of the air inlet / vent port is 1A = 740 mm × 740 mm, and the size and position can be easily changed on the surface of the storage chamber. Using ANSYS CFX ver 18.1, which is a CFD commercial software, the area of the air inlet / vent port was changed to 1A, 2A, 3A, and 5A, and the hydrogen mole fraction in the storage chamber when the area changed was analyzed. Consequently, the increase in the area of the air inlet port further reduced the concentration of the leaked hydrogen as compared with that of the vent port, and improved the ventilation performance of at least 2A or more from the single air inlet port. As the area of the air inlet port increased, hydrogen was uniformly stratified at the upper part of the storage chamber, but was out of the LFL range. However, simply increasing the area of the vent port inadequately affected the ventilation performance.

  • Air pollutants have a high impact on everyday life as well as on human health; therefore, new technologies such as low-emission vehicles and add-on systems for air pollutant reduction are needed for our society. However, the environmental benefits and costs of those technologies are not taken into account in existing economic feasibility assessments, which is a barrier that needs to be overcome for green technology to achieve wide dissemination and fast penetration in the market. Thus, this study develops a methodology to assess the economic feasibility of an air pollutant reduction technology by taking into account the social costs from air pollutants and carries out a case study to validate the methodology. Because the social unit costs for air pollutants have not been evaluated yet in South Korea, the methodology uses the social unit costs evaluated for the European Union that are then converted to those for South Korea based on the measuring criteria for vehicle emission gases, parity purchasing price, foreign currency exchange rate, and customer price index. The social unit costs for South Korea are used to assess economic feasibility. A case study was performed to assess the economic feasibility of a dual fuel system using diesel and compressed natural gas by taking into account social costs from air pollutants as well as economic costs. This study could contribute to assessing the true economic feasibility of green technology, projects, and policy related with air pollutant reduction.

  • A mobile emission laboratory (MEL) was designed to measure the amount of traffic pollutants with high temporal and spatial resolution under real conditions. Equipment for gas-phase measurements of quantity of CO, NOx, $CO_2$, and THC and for the measurement of the number density and size distribution of fine and ultra-fine particles by a FMPS and a CPC were placed in a mini-van. The exhaust of different type of vehicles can be sampled by MEL. This paper describes the construction and technical details of the MEL and presents data from the experiment in which a car chases city buses fuelled by diesel, CNG, and LPG. The diameters of most particles in the exhaust of the diesel city bus were less than 300 nm and most of the particles had a diameter of 30-60 nm. However, most particles in the exhaust of the CNG and LPG city buses were nanoparticles (diameter: less than 50 nm).
