  • Pressurized Water Reactor Owners Group(PWROG) proposed and applied a risk-informed inservice inspection(RI-ISI) program to alternate existing ASME Section XI periodic inspections. The RI-ISI programs enhance overall safety by focusing inspections of piping at high safety significant(HSS) and locations where failure mechanisms are likely to be present, and by improving the effectiveness on inspection of components because the examination methods are based on the postulated failure mode and the configuration of the piping structural element. The RI-ISI programs can reduce NDE, man-rem exposure, costs of engineering analysis, outage duration and chance of complicating plant operations etc. RI-ISI methods of piping inservice inspection were applied on 3 units(KSNP : Korea Standard Nuclear Power Plant) and are scheduled to apply on the other units. In this paper, we compared and showed the results of the 2 units and we concluded that the RI-ISI application could enhance and maintain plant safety and give unquantifiable benefits.

  • The propulsion feeding system of KSR-III is composed of tubes, valves and PSC, and controls the flow of propellant entering to engine. The test of PTA-I is carried out to verify the characteristic of propulsion feeding system and component. The tests of operation characteristic of component, hydraulic characteristic of tubes, flow control using venturi, oscillation of dynamic pressure, characteristic of regulator are carried out. Troubles of component are found out, and renewed, and the performance of the propulsion feeding system is verified through PTA-I. The results of PTA-I are used to the configuration of propulsion feeding system and test of PTA-II.

  • High frequency signals are analyzed which are measured at the inlet / outlet pipeline and pump casing during cavitation tests of the LOx pump for the liquid rocket engine. RMS values of data are shown according to the cavitation number. RMS values of the synchronous frequency, its harmonic frequencies and frequencies of cavitation instabilities are also calculated. The pressure pulsations of the inlet and outlet pipeline are affected by cavitation instabilities. 3x component is predominant in the outlet pulsation sensor since 3x component generated at the inducer is amplified at the impeller. The cavitation instability is also found at the accelerometer signal of the casing.

  • ASME BPVC provides stress evaluation rules for Class 2 and 3 nuclear piping. However, such rules are difficult to be applied to reinforced wall-thinned pipes during service. To resolve this issue, a new method for stress evaluation of reinforced wall-thinned pipes is proposed in this work, based on the equivalent stiffness concept. By converting a reinforced wall-thinned pipe to an equivalent straight pipe having the same stiffness, stress evaluation can be proceeded using the current ASME BPVC rules. The proposed method is applied to pipes with 4 different normal pipe size and the effects of reinforcement and wall-thinning dimensions on evaluated stresses are discussed.

  • Butterfly valves have been used for shut-off and throttling-control application in many industrial fields. Recently, they are frequently used for cooling water, oil system and ballast piping system of many larger vessels. They are especially suited for flow throttling control of heat exchangers in engine room. Measurement by the PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) was conducted to investigate the flow characteristics of butterfly valve inserted within circular pipe. Flow behaviors such as instantaneous and time-mean velocity vectors are investigated. Furthermore, to reveal systematic performance of the butterfly valve, wall pressure was measured at 6 points along the pipe by digital manometer. As the valve position moves to the closed side, flow separation increases and persists its tendency downstream until smoothly uniform flow developed. The pressure loss is found to be about zero for the disk open angles less than 45 degrees, but is substantially increased for those larger than 60 degrees.

  • In cryogenic feeding system of turbo pump fed liquid-propulsion rocket, rise of cryogenic propellant temperature can bring into geysering in pipe or cavitation in turbo pump. In this paper, performance analysis of recirculation line which is one of the method to inhibit these phenomenon is carried out based on the configuration of KSLV-I 1st stage LOX feeding system, and parametric study to find design parameter. Diameter and re-entrance height, initial LOX temperature, ullage pressure, and natural convection heat transfer coefficient are varied to see the effects on performance. Additional He is injected into recirculation line to promote LOX recirculation. 1-dimensional analysis using network-solver, SINDA/FLUINT is carried out.

  • The purpose of this study is developing the computer program for hydraulic design sprinkler systems have performed the means for the general use of network analysis method. The computer program is based on the theoretical concepts of the related Hazen-Williams equations, a modified Bernoulli equations, and the Hardy Cross method of pipe network analysis. Looped piping calculations are solved by using either the Hardy Cross method or the other iteration methods. While the other methods are solved using simultaneous equations, the Hardy Cross method is concerned with one loop at a time using reiterative process. Due to its simplicity the Hardy Cross method will be the primary method described in this thesis. The purpose of this study is to develope hydraulic calculation program by using algorithm for network analysis method. The development of computer program for the hydraulic design of sprinkler systems will perform the means in the performance-based sprinkler system design.

  • It is important that the gas collected from wells completed in waste landfill should be continuously and stably transported to pre-treatment stage through pipelines. The transport is generally affected by fluid flow characteristics of landfill, gas reserves, leachate moisture holdup in pipeline, structures and dimensions of pipeline network, etc. This paper analyzes the pipeline transport and collection mechanism for gas generated in a durable waste landfill. From the results, the optimal controlled scheme of blower inlet pressure is proposed for the prevention of trapped gas pocket zones.

  • The use of pipe-bends brings about non-uniform flows at the exit of them due to the velocity difference between inner and outer flows inside the bend. These phenomena may cause turbopump of satellite launch vehicle to run off-design and reduce its efficiency, and also introduce unstable influx of propellants to engine manifold after passing through a turbopump. In order to improve the uniformity of flow at the bend exit, certain turning vanes are set up in the bend pipe normally. Correspondingly the design is an $90^{\circ}\;and\;45^{\circ}$ bend pipes that incorporate with the maximum three turning vanes. All designs were analyzed with numerical analysis by solving the Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensions in case of each respective fuel and oxidizer. Evaluations of the vaned pipe bends designs were accomplished by the velocity magnitude distributions and the predicted pressure drops. We could find that the more vaned bend pipe and larger angle pipe under consideration effectively, the more uniform velocity magnitude of the bend and pressure losses.

  • This study performed a series of burst tests at ambient temperature using real-scale elbow specimen containing a local wall-thinning defect at it's intrados or extrados and evaluated failure pressure of locally wall-thinned elbows. In the experiment, a 90-degree 100A, Sch. 80 standard elbow was employed, and various wall-thinning geometries, such as length, depth, and circumferential angle, were considered. From the results of experiment, the dependences of failure pressure of wall-thinned elbows on the defect geometries and locations were investigated. In addition, the reliability of existing models was examined by comparing the tests data with the results predicted from existing failure pressure evaluation models for locally wall-thinned elbow.
