A corrugated pipe is widely used in firefighting equipment and sprinkler pipes because of its elasticity, which is less damaged by deformation and convenient facilities. However, the corrugated shape of the wall results in complex internal turbulent flow, and it is difficult to predict the pressure drop, which is an important design factor for pipe flow. The pressure drop in the corrugated tube is a function of the shape factors of the pipe wall, such as groove height, length, and pitch. Existing studies have only shown a study of pressure drop due to length changes in the case of D-shaped tubes with less than 5 pitch (P) and height (K) of the rectangular grooves in the tube. In this work, we conduct a numerical study of pressure drop for P/Ks with length and height changes of 2.8, 3.5 and 4.67 with Re Numbers of 55,000, 70,000 and 85,000. The pressure drop in the corrugated tube was interpreted to decrease with smaller P/K. We show that the pressure drop is affected by the change in the groove aspect ratio, and the increase in the height of the groove increases the recirculation area, and the larger the Reynolds number, the greater the pressure drop.

This paper focuses on introducing the concept of the multi-scale study on the Ulleungdo-Dokdo Volcanic Group in the East Sea and recent new findings from it. Multi-channel seismic reflection data reveals that the major volcanic activities of the Ulleungdo-Dokdo Volcanic Group took place between 5 and 2.5 Ma, which were propagated from Isabu Tablemount on the eastern end to the Ulleung Island on the western end. The terrestrial Ulleung Island was built via 5 stages, which eventually formed a 3 km-wide caldera, named Nari Caldera, and a volcanic dome, named Albong, within the caldera. The Albong and the unit N-1, the earliest phreatomagmatic explosive phase of the Albong volcano, were generated from a new magma injected into the existing phonolitic body. The generally trachyandesitic bulk rock composition of the pumice in unit N-1 and Albong is attributed to the contamination of the new magma by mafic cumulates at the base of the existing phonolitic chamber. The lines of evidence of a new magma injection point toward that Ulleung Island is an active volcano with a live subvolcanic magma plumbing system.

The electro-hydrostatic actuator (EHA) recently has been used in flight control fields for aircraft because of its benefits of minimizing oil leakage and weight, improving safety, and etc. while independently operating the hydraulic power source and eliminating complex hydraulic piping. The aircraft of which EHA is installed inside, has the thermal management issue of EHA, because of its limited cooling source as compared with the aircraft which installs the traditional central hydraulic system. So, the thermal analysis model which predicts the thermal characteristics of EHA, is required to resolve this thermal management issue. In this study, an oil circulation circuit inside the hydraulic power module comprised of hydraulic pump and electrical motor for EHA was applied. This is for the purpose of developing the internal rotary group of hydraulic power module, which operates under the conditions of high rotation speed and hydraulic pressure. After formulating an appropriate thermal analysis model, the thermal analysis results with oil cooled or no oil cooled hydraulic control module were compared and reviewed, for the purpose of predicting the thermal characteristics of EHA.

The seismic performance of buried PE pipes is reported to be favorable due to their exceptional elongation capacity at break. Although a seismic performance evaluation procedure based on the response displacement method has been summarized in Korea for fusion-bonded PE pipes, there is currently no procedure available for mechanically jointed PE pipes. This article aims to present a seismic performance evaluation procedure based on the response displacement method specifically designed for mechanically jointed PE pipes in Korea. When employing the mechanical joining method for PE pipes, it is recommended to adhere to the evaluation procedure established for segment-type pipes. This involves assessing the stress induced by the pipe, the expansion and contraction strain of the joint, and the bending angle of the pipe joint. Furthermore, the coefficient of inhomogeneity of the soil, which is necessary for estimating the axial strain of the ground, is introduced. Additionally, a computation method for determining lateral displacement and reconsolidation settlement in soil susceptible to liquefaction is proposed. As a result of the sensitivity analysis considering the typical soil condition in Korea, the mechanically jointed PE pipe with a certain quality was shown to have good structural seismic safety when soil liquefaction was not considered. This procedure serves as a valuable tool for seismic design and evaluating the seismic performance of mechanically joined buried PE pipes, which are primarily utilized for connecting small-diameter pipes.

The policy of promoting innovation clusters aims to enhance the competitiveness of industries by strengthening the linkages between industry sectors and research sectors in specific regions. In Korea, after the concept of innovation clusters was introduced by the OECD in 1997, Korean government actively pursued policies based on this concept in the fields of industry, region, and science and technology. Previous policies and research on the activation of innovation clusters have tended to focus on the exchange and collaboration among members. However, this study focused on enhancing the competitiveness of industries and regions, in other words, strengthening the competitiveness of companies, which is the fundamental reason for fostering innovative clusters. Accordingly, this study aimed to analyze the impact of factors activating innovation clusters on the business performance of SMEs located in the Daedeok Innopolis. To achieve this, based on the essential concept of innovation clusters such as industrial agglomeration factors, networking factors, innovation generation factors, the study derived factors for activating innovation clusters and verified hypotheses using the survey results of 175 companies. Among the factors activating innovation clusters, industrial agglomeration and innovation generation were found to have a positive impact on the business performance of companies. However, networking factors were analyzed to have no significant influence on the business performance of companies. This study differentiates itself by addressing the factors for activating innovation clusters through empirical analysis, unlike previous case-based studies. Furthermore, considering the difference between intuitive judgments on networking factors in innovation clusters and their actual impact on business performance, the study raised the practical significance of conducting a comprehensive examination from various perspectives, such as the socially and culturally embedded structures in the region, the characteristics of specialized industries, and the needs of cluster members, to develop more effective policies for innovation clusters.

Ground subsidence mainly occurs in urban areas with high population density, so it is necessary to clearly identify the cause of occurrence and prepare in advance. The main cause of ground subsidence is reported to be the creation of cavities in the ground due to damage to underground pipes, but the property information and influencing factors of underground pipes to predict and prepare for ground subsidence are not properly established. Therefore, in this study, factors showing a significant correlation with the occurrence of ground subsidence were selected among the underground facility property information and a regression equation was proposed through logistic regression analysis. For this purpose, data on underground structures and ground subsidence history information in the target area were collected, and the target area was divided into girds of 100m x 100m in size using QGIS. The underground facility attribute information and ground subsidence history information contained within the gird were extracted. Then, preprocessing was performed to construct a dataset and correlation analysis was performed. As a result, factors excluding the year of sewer pipes and communication pipes and the average depth of communication pipes, heat pipes, and gas pipes were found to have a significant correlation with ground subsidence. In addition, a regression equation for whether ground subsidence occurred in the target area is proposed through logistic regression analysis.
The virgin forests on and around Sungin-bong in Ulreung-do, an island situated between the Korean peninsula and Japanese archipelago, were investigated phytosociologically. They were classified into two communities, i.e. Fagus crenata var. multinervis - Majanthemum dilatatum community and F. crenata var. multinervis - Sasa kuriensis community. The former was subdivided into several units ; Acer takesimense - Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum group, including Tsuga sieboldii - Taxus cuspidata var. tatifolia subgroup and a typical subgroup, and Acer mono var. savatieri - Rumohra standishii group, including Dystaenia takeshimana subgroup and a typical subgroup. The other was subdivided into two subunits ; Acer okamotoanum group and a typical group. It was estimated that this area was orginally covered with beech and maple dominated forest vegetation and with Machilus dominated forest or bamboo forest. However, in these days, The natural vegetation of it has been destroyed and in future, may also be disturbed gradually by human activities. Judging from the coincidence method, the structure and distribution of the forest communities was more related to altitude than to topography. The phytomass, based upon the basal area of each community to $100m^2$ showed that Acer mono var. savatieri - Rumohra standishii group ($BA=7574.1cm^2$, $P=9,882,058cm^3$) haved the largest value and Tsuga sieboldii - Taxus cuspidata var. latifolia subgroup($BA=2126.3cm^2$, $P=1,746,755cm^3$) showed the smallest value. The flora of the vascular plants collected from this area consists of 71 families, 187 genera, 243 species, 1 subspecies, 44 varieties, 6 forms and 294 taxa in total.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of erosion control works on the stream ecosystem in a mountain torrential stream. The species composition of benthic macroinvertebrates and biological water quality were investigated before and after construction of erosion control works at 5 sites. The total number of benthic macroinvertebrates before construction was 3,086 individuals including 4 phyla, 6 classes, 11 orders, 22 families, and 25 species, but after construction it has decreased to 1,208 individuals including 4 phyla, 6 classes, 10 orders, 17 families, and 19 species. Especially, the diversity, richness, and evenness indices, which were calculated based on existing number of biological species, have decreased or not produced at the erosion control sites, where biological species were not found or the minimum number of species were found. The results of community analysis of benthic macroinvertebrates and ESB(Ecological Score of Benthic macroinvertebrate community) indicated that the environmental qualities of the stream based on saprobity, environmental condition, and water quality decreased after the construction at all sites: before construction, the top of the stream was satisfactory and some satisfactory, the middle was some defectiveness, and the lower was defectiveness and very defectiveness; after construction, all parts of the stream except some parts of the top were very defectiveness. Moreover, the water quality of torrential stream was rated between I to III before construction, but after construction, it declined to $IV{\sim}V$ except control. The habitat damage of benthic macro invertebrates occurred at all investigation sites after the construction of erosion control works led to reduction of the number of biological species and water quality deterioration. The results reported in this study were collected directly after the construction of erosion control works. Therefore, additional studies are needed to further explore the effect of disaster-prevention of erosion control works and the recovery process of stream ecosystem through long term monitoring.
Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) stand is representative lowland exotic plantation with low ecological quality and arrested succession in South Korea. To facilitate succession and restore natural vegetation, small canopy gaps (${\sim}57m^2$), which can modify minimally structural variables and reduce restoration related disturbances on stand, was established in the black locust stand, and oak (Quercus serrata) seedlings were introduced in the gap. Two types of varying levels were introduced for gap creation; cutting (C) and girdling (G) on canopies. Understory removal (CU and GU) treatment was applied as subtypes of structural modification. Growth (diameter, height and leaf area) of target species and responses (species composition, diversity and coverage) of understory community were monitored during study years (2007~2008). Canopy openness was different significantly among treatments but not for light availability. Based on the result of logistic regression, growth of height and leaf area of seedlings were significant variables on seedling survival. Height and leaf area of seedlings were increased during study years, although radial growth was reduced. During study years, there were no significant differences in species composition and diversity, and total coverage increased about 20%. Increase of resources by gap creation and understory removal likely affect growth of target species. Small gap creation was effective to reduce understory responses in composition and diverstiy. Synthesized, growth of target species and responses of understory community to small canopy gap creation exhibited, in short term, possibility of utilization in alternative forest restoration and management option. Long-term monitoring is necessary to certificate effect of artificial gap creation on forest restoration.
Ulmus davidiana var. japonica is a deciduous tree species used for traditional medicine. This study was conducted to investigate the variation of samara, seed, germination and growth characteristics among populations and among individuals within five natural populations of U. davidiana var. japonica distributed in Korea. The ten characteristics of samara and seed, the three germination behaviors as well as the two growth traits were studied in samaras collected from total 32 trees. Statistical analysis of all characteristics showed that there were significant differences among populations as well as among individuals within populations. In this study, the mean characteristics of this species were 13.0 mm in samara length, 9.7 mm in samara width, 1.37 in samara index, 0.015 g in samara weight, 3.07 mm in samara stalk length, 3.85 seed length, 2.66 mm in seed width, 1.46 in seed index, 1.29 mm seed thickness, 0.0062 g in seed weigh, 34.8% in germination percentage, 8.6 days in mean germination time, 3.5 ea./day in gemination rate, 37.7 cm in height and 4.90 mm in root collar diameter. Especially, coefficients of variations in samara weight, germination percentage, germination rate, height and root collar diameter were relatively high (${\geq}30.0%$) compared to other traits. There was no significant relationship between population association and geographical distribution. The results of principal component analysis for 15 characteristics showed that primary four principal components (PC's) explained 100% of the total variation. The first PC accounted for 41.8% of the variability which correlated with morphological traits, the second PC accounted for 32.9% of the variability which correlated with germination behaviors and the third PC accounted for 16.3% of the variability which correlated with growth traits.
