  • The geostationary satellite COMS is going to be launched in 2010, and, in the series of test, there are some high-pressure tests concerning the vessel tank filled with helium gas of hundreds atmospheric pressure. In this paper, authors evaluates risk associated with accidental rupture of the test system. Two possible scenarios are considered: 1) the 310-bar helium tank ruptures at the center of the acoustic chamber, and 2) the 116-bar reduced-pressure helium tank ruptures in the test room shielded by bullet-proof glasses. Using the theory of blast wave propagation and computational simulation, the dynamics of wave reflected in a confined space is investigated for highly complex unsteady flow physics.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to propose a solution to the case where $V_{50}$ calculation is impossible in the process of bulletproof test. Methods: In this study, we proposed a $V_{50}$ estimation method using logistic regression analysis. Six scenarios were applied by combining the homogeneity of the sample and the speed range. Then, 1,000 simulations were performed per scenario and six assumptions reflecting the reality were applied. Results: The result of the study, it was confirmed that there was no statistical difference between the $V_{50}$ value calculated by the conventional method and the $V_{50}$ value calculated by the improvement method. Therefore, in situations where $V_{50}$ can not be calculated, it is reasonable to use logistic regression analysis. Conclusion: This study develops a methodology that is easy to use and reliable by using statistical model based on actual data.

  • The armor composite material targets such as aramid FRMLs with different type and ply number of face material and different type of back-up material, were studied to determine ballistic impact resistance and dynamic failure behavior during ballistic impact. Ballistic impact resistance is determined by $\textrm{V}_{50}$ ballistic limit, a statical velocity with 50% probability for complete penetration, test method. Also dynamic failure behaviors are respectfully observed that result from $\textrm{V}_{50}$ tests. $\textrm{V}_{50}$ tests with $0^{\circ}$ obliquity at room temperature were conducted with projectiles that were able to achieve near or complete penetration during high velocity impact tests. As a result, ballistic impact resistance of anodized Al 5052-H34 alloy(2 ply) is better than that of anodized Al 5052-H34 alloy(1 ply), but Titanium alloy showed the similar ballistic impact resistance. In the face material, ballistic impact resistance of titanium alloy is better than that of anodized Al 5052-H34 alloy. In the back-up material, ballistic impact resistance of T750 type aramid fiber is better than that of CT709 type aramid fiber.

  • The helmet is an imperative personal protective equipment. This protective device must be able to guard the human head against potential risks. Helmets are classified according into the purpose of use; therefore, the required performance and specifications depend on the type of products. Military helmets are intended to protect the wearer's head from bullets and shrapnel. Generally, lightweight super fibers and fiber reinforced composite materials are used as helmet shell materials, and NIJ STD of U.S. Department of Justice is most widely used as international standard related to bulletproof helmets. Safety helmets are widely used for industrial application and sports leisure. In general, the performance of shock absorption must be ensured, and various lining systems are applied in material, design, and combination methods. Evaluation standards have also been classified and strictly controlled for each purpose; therefore, it is difficult to certify with the existing standards such as the recently developed convergence helmets. However, it is possible to launch the product through a separate national integrated certification procedure.

  • There are a number of studies on chemically strengthened glass. Most of them are strengthened in molten salt bath below transformation range of glass. This research is distinguished from the aforementioned studies in that single $KNO_3$ powder was used by employing screen printing technique. In this study soda-lime-silicate(SLS) glasses for bulletproof glass application with various thicknesses were used. The maximum value of the bending strength is 791MPa heat treated at $480^{\circ}C$, which is about 4.3 times higher than the parent glass, which is the highest strength of all soda-lime glasses. In this study, it is also observed that Vickers hardness increased to $657H_v$, which is about 15% higher than the parent glass($568.7H_v$) and fracture toughness was not changed. Depth profiles measured by electron probe micro analyzer(EPMA) showed a correlation between the migrations of $K^+$ ions with bending strength of ion exchanged glasses.

  • For application of transparent bulletproof materials, the SLS(soda-lime-silicate) glass was heated by 2-step crystallization. The DTA curve for SLS glass revealed the nucleation and crystal growth temperature at about $575^{\circ}C$ and $675^{\circ}C$, respectively. The crystallized glass was heated at various conditions(temperature, time). As a result, the maximum nucleation and crystal growth rates were $3.8\times10^5/mm^3{\cdot}hr$ at $575^{\circ}C$ and 20.58nm/min at $680^{\circ}C$, respectively. The bending strength, fracture toughness and vickers hardness were 451.7MPa, $0.9388MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, and $693.9H_v$ which were 201%, 31%, and 22% higher than parent glass, respectively. Surface image and transmittance of crystallized SLS glass were analyzed by optical microscopy and UV/VIS/NIR spectrophotometer. Transmittance of crystallized SLS glass at visible-range(200~800nm) was not changed.

  • In order to investigate the characteristics of penatration and the effect of surface treatment in A15052-H34, Al5082-Hl31 and titanium alloy laminates which were treated by anodizing and PVD(Physical Vapor Desposition) method, ballistic tests were conducted. Thickness of surface membrane in A15052-H34, Al5082-Hl31, were $25{\mu}m$ and that of titanium $0.9{\mu}m$ respectively. Surface hardness test was conducted using micro Vicker's hardness tester. Resistance to penetration is determined by the protection ballistic limit(V50), a statistical velocity with $50\%$ probability for complete penetration. Fracture behaviors and ballistic tolerance, described by penetration modes, are observed from the results of V50 test and Projectile Through Plate(PTP) test at velocities greater than protection ballistic limit, respectively. Present experimental results derived from this research help to optimize laminate impact behavior by varing the laminate thickness and surface treated materials.
