  • The development of OrientaL tobacco budworm (OTE), Heticoverpa assulta, was studied at seven constant temperatures from 18 to $33^{\circ}C$ with a 14L : 10D photoperiod on the artificial diet. The egg, larval, and pupal duration comprised ca. 10, 48, and 42% of the total developmental time (from egg to adult emergence). The lower developmental threshold temperatures for egg, larval, pupal, and overall development were 8.62, 12.65, 11.64, and $11.89^{\circ}C$, respectively. The biophysical model of Sharpe & DeMichele (1977) provided a good description of OTB's development as a function of temperature ($r^2$=0.993~O.996). The Wmbull distribution was fitted to cumulative frequency distributions of normalized developmental times for each developmental stage of OTE ($r^2$== 0.987 ~0.999).

  • Development and predation of an aphidophagous gall midge, Aphidoletes aphydimyza (Rondani) , on the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae Sulzer, were studied under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. The developmental threshold temperature of the gall midge larvae was estimated to be $13^{\circ}C$. Larval and total developmental periods were 5.3 and 29 days at 25 $\pm$$2^{\circ}C$. The gall midge attacked more aphids as increasing density of peach aphids, and consumed 4 out of 10 peach aphids per day in a petri dish (9 cm in diameter) at maximum. In green house, the gall midge could control the density of the green peach aphids efficiently with a delayed density dependent-like pattern.

  • The natural enemy was identified as a parasitic wasp, Binodoxys communis Gahan. B. communis taxonomically belongs to the family braconidae, subfamily aphidinae, and genera binodoxys. It develops normally at 17.5 to 32.5℃, and not at 35℃. Depending on the temperature, the longest development period of B. communis was 21.9 days at 17.5℃, and shortest was 6.46 days at 32.5℃. The effective accumulated temperature was 175.44 DD for females as well as males; however, the developmental threshold temperature was 10.87℃ and 10.74℃ for females and males, respectively. This parasitic wasp was found to prefer cotton aphids and soybean aphids as its prey.

  • The soybean podborer, Matsumuraeses falcana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), is one of important pests in soybean crop. In the purpose of forecasting population dynamics of M. falcana, we investigated the effects of temperature on development of each life stage, adult longevity and fecundity of Matsumuraeses falcana at seven constant temperatures of 10, 13, 19, 22, 25, 28, and 31℃. Eggs hatched successfully at all temperature subjected. M. falcana developed from egg hatching to adult emergence at the tested temperatures except 10, 13, and 31℃. The developmental period of each life stage and adult longevity of M. falcana decreased as temperature increased. The lower developmental threshold (LDT) and thermal constant (K) from egg hatching to adult emergence of M. falcana were estimated by linear regression as 10.2℃ and 492.04DD, respectively. Lower and higher threshold temperature (TL and TH) were calculated by the Lobry-Rosso-Flandrois (LRF) and Sharpe-Schoolfield-Ikemoto (SSI) models. TL and TH from egg hatching to adult emergence using SSI model were 16.7℃ and 29.1℃. Thermal windows, i.e., the range in temperature between the minimum and maximum rate of development, of M. falcana was 12.4℃. We constructed the adult oviposition model of M. falcana using adult survivorship and fecundity. Temperature-dependent immature development and adult oviposition models will help constructing the population model of M. falcana and developing the strategies of integrated pest management in soybean fields.

  • Matsumuraeses phaseoli is one of important pests in soybean crops, especially adzuki beans. We investigated the effects of temperature on development of each life stage, adult longevity and fecundity of M. phaseoli for understanding the biological characteristics of M. phaseoli at ten constant temperatures of 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, and 34℃. Eggs hatched successfully at all temperature subjected except 7℃ and 34℃. The developmental period of each life stage and adult longevity of M. phaseoli decreased as temperature increased. Lower and higher threshold temperature (TL and TH) were calculated by the Lobry-Rosso-Flandrois (LRF) and Sharpe-Schoolfield-Ikemoto (SSI) models. The lower developmental threshold (LDT) and thermal constant (K) from egg hatching to adult emergence of M. phaseoli were estimated by linear regression as 9.04℃ and 422.97DD, respectively. TL and TH from egg hatching to adult emergence using SSI model were 20.0℃ and 32.3℃. Thermal windows, i.e., the range in temperature between the minimum and maximum rate of development, of M. phaseoli was 12.3℃. We constructed the adult oviposition model of M. phaseoli using adult survivorship and fecundity. Temperature-dependent development models and adult oviposition models will be helpful to understand the population dynamics of M. falcana and to establish the strategy of integrated pest management in soybean fields.

  • Ostrinia scapulalis is one of important pests in leguminous crops, especially red bean. In order to understand the biological characteristics of the insect, we investigated the effects of temperature on development of each life stage, adult longevity and fecundity of O. scapulalis at eleven constant temperatures of 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, 34, and 36℃. Eggs and larvae successfully developed next life stage at most temperature subjected except 7, 10 and 13℃. The developmental period of egg, larva and pupa decreased as temperature increased. Lower and higher threshold temperature (TL and TH) were calculated by the Lobry-Rosso-Flandrois (LRF) and Sharpe-Schoolfield-Ikemoto (SSI) models. The lower developmental threshold (LDT) and thermal constant (K) from egg hatching to adult emergence of O. scapulalis were estimated by linear regression as 13.5℃ and 384.5DD, respectively. TL and TH from egg hatching to adult emergence using SSI model were 19.4℃ and 39.8℃. Thermal windows, i.e., the range in temperature between the minimum and maximum rate of development, of O. scapulalis was 20.4℃. Adults produced viable eggs at the temperature range between 16℃ and 34℃, and showed a maximum number, ca. 416 offsprings, at 25℃. Adult models including aging rate, age-specific survival rate, age-specific cumulative oviposition, and temperature-dependent fecundity were constructed, using the temperature-dependent adult traits. Temperature-dependent development models and adult oviposition models will be useful components to understand the population dynamics of O. scapulalis and will be expected using a basic data for establishing the strategy of integrated pest management in leguminous crops.

  • The Hawaiian beet webworm (Spoladea recurvalis) is one of the serious insect pests found on red beet (Beta vulgaris var. conditiva) in Korea. The study was conducted to investigate the development period of S. recurvalis at various constant temperatures, 15.0, 17.5, 20.0, 22.5, 25.0, 27.5, 30.0, 32.5 and $35.0^{\circ}C$, with $65{\pm}5%$ RH and a photoperiod of 16L:8D. The developmental period from egg to pre-adult was 51.0 days at $17.5^{\circ}C$ and 14.6 days at $35.0^{\circ}C$. The developmental period of S. recurvalis was decreased with increasing temperature. The relationship between the developmental rate and temperature was fitted well by linear regression analysis ($R^2{\geq}0.87$). The lower developmental threshold and effective accumulative temperature of the total immature stage were $10.4^{\circ}C$ and 384.7 degree days, respectively. The nonlinear relationship between the temperature and developmental rate was well described by the Lactin model. The relationship between the cumulative frequency and normalized distributions of the developmental period for each life stage were fitted to the Weibull function with $R^2=0.63{\sim}0.87$.

  • From 2017 to 2019, the ovipositional and the developmental characteristics of Gampsocleis ussuriensis Adelung in the Buan area of Jeonbuk Province were examined. G. ussuriensis were mostly found in the weeded areas around the reservoir, where the adults first appeared in mid-July, showed up where by the early September, and overwintered in eggs. Nymphs appeared in early April to mid-July the next year. The nymphs hatched from early April and adults appeared after molting five times. The ovipositional period of G. ussuriensis was approximately 58 days. The total number of eggs per female was 124. The mean longevity of adults was 95.6 days for females and 84.8 days for males. Ovipositional mats were best with mixed Masato and Coco-Pitt at a ratio of 7:3. Developmental period of G. ussuriensis nymphs was 64.1 days at 24℃ and was longer than at different temperatures. The higher the temperature, the shorter the developmental period. The survival rate of nymphs was the best at 32℃ in 77.8%. The higher the density while rearing, the lower the survival rate, and the faster the development and molting velocity.

  • Fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is a invasive migratory pest of native to the tropical and sub-tropical regions that has recently invaded Korea with damage to cornfield. The study was conducted to investigate the development periods of S. frugiperda on artificial diet at six different temperatures. The developmental period from eggs to adult at 18, 21, 24, 27, 30 and 32℃ was 79.8, 54.2, 34.3, 28.4, 24.6 and 24.0 days, respectivery and decreased with increasing temperature. The pupal periods of females were shorter than males. Most of the larvae developed through six instar, but the ratio of 7 or more instar increased at low temperatures. The relationship between the development rate and temperature was fitted with by linear regression analysis. The lower development threshold for egg and larva development was 12.9℃ and 11.3℃, respectively, 12.6℃ for pupae and 11.8℃ for egg-to-adult development. The effective accumulative temperature for the development of the respective life cycle stages were 37.0 DD for eggs, 286.3 DD for larvae, 132.2 DD for pupae and 456.8 DD egg-to-adult development.
