  • The embryonic and postembryonic developments of Nezara antennata Scott were observed in 5 different rearing cages such as A (Cylindrical, ${\phi}\;10cm{\times}4cm$), B (Cylindrical, ${\phi}\;14.5cm{\times}2.8cm$), C (Rectangle, $6.5L{\times}6.5cmW{\times}10cmH$), D (Cylindrical, ${\phi}$ 9cm in bottom & ${\phi}$ 11.5 cm in $upper{\times}10.8cm$) and E (Cylindrical, ${\phi}\;15cm{\times}7.5cm$) containing soybean and peanut seeds as food, and sponge soaked with water under laboratory condition of $24^{\circ}C$ and 15L : 9D. Hatchability ranged from 93 to 97%. Nymphal duration was shortest of 6 days in the 1st instar and longest of 10 days in the 5th instar. The nymphal duration was 38 to 39 days observed in the rearing cages. Emergence rate was in the range from 53 to 62% with highest in A and B cages. Adult longevity was 65 to 75 days for male, and 67 to 74 days for female, and was longest in the B cage. Total number of eggs laid by female adult was in the range from 51 to 56 without significant difference in the rearing cages, and was the most in the B cage. Accordingly, the reproductive rate of N. antennata for 1 generation was within 25 to 33 times, and was highest in the B rearing cage. Therefore, it could be concluded that B cage is most suitable for stable rearing of N. antennata under laboratory condition.

  • Effects of temperature on the development and reproduction of the Udea ferrugalis Hubner were investigated at various temperatures (10, 15, 18, 20, 23, 25, 27, 30$\^{C}$). The development times of eggs, larvae, prepupae and pupae were shorter in higher temperatures than in lower ones. Egg and pupa did not develop at 10$\^{C}$. The lower developmental threshold temperatures for eggs, larvae, pupae were 9.5, 9.6 and 11.9$\^{C}$, respectively, and their thermal requirements for development completion were 87.9, 200.9 and 119.7 degree-days at the same temperature, respectively. Adult longevity was 25.2 days at 15$\^{C}$, 7.3 at 23$\^{C}$ and 5.3 at 30$\^{C}$. Mean fecundity per female was higher at 20-23$\^{C}$ compared to other temperatures. Mean generation time in days (T) was shorter in higher temperature region. Net reproductive rate per generation (Ro) was lowest at 15$\^{C}$ (138.2) and it was highest at 20$\^{C}$ (265.4). The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r$\_$m/) was highest at 25$\^{C}$ as 0.247. As a result, it was considered that optimum range of temperature for U. ferrugalis growth was 20.0 to 23$\^{C}$.

  • This study compared the biological characteristics, nymphal development, adult longevity, and oviposition of the bean bug, Riptortus clavatus Thunberg, in fibrous nylon and glass-tube in the insectary at $28{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ and 16L:8D of photoperiod. Nymphal duration in the fibrous nylon-tube was 1 day longer than in the glass tube; the difference was attributed to the developmental duration of the fifth instar. Percent emergence in the fibrous nylon-tube was $64\%,\;8\%$ higher than in the glass tube ($56\%$). In the fibrous nylon-tube, adult longevities for female and male were 4.1 times and 6.0 times higher than those in the glass tube. Preoviposition period was 1 day longer in the fibrous nylon-tube than that in the glass tube. The total number of eggs laid was 3.5 times more in the fibrous nylon-tube than in the glass tube. The oviposition duration lasted about 30 days for the bean bug in the fibrous nylon-tube and about 8 days for those in the glass. Accordingly, the fibrous nylon-tube was found more conducive than the glass tube for determining the biology of bean bug.

  • To study overwintering biology of the oriental tobacco budworm (OTB), Helicoverpaa.ssulta, OTB larvae were collected from middle and southern region of Korea in the autumn and rearedto diapausing pupae. Diapausing pupae were held at two different locations (Suwon and Chinju) and wererecollected in the spring to observe adult emergence rate and duration to adult emergence at 25$^{\circ}$C. Thesurvivorship of overwintering pupae was less than 5% when the pupae were buried in the soil in 20cmdepth. However, more than 60% of the pupae survived when they were kept in the plastic cup withartificial diet and were buried in the soil. The mean developmental periods of overwintering pupae at 25"C varied from 20.4 days to 43.9 days depending on years and locations where larvae were collected andpupae were held. The proportion of individuals which required longer than 30 days for development washigher in the population from the middle regions than those of southern regions. However, the proportiondecreased when the pupae collected from middle regions were held at Chinju, southern region. Chinju, southern region.

  • The study was conducted to investigate the developmental periods and effect of several insecticides on Hemiptarsenus sp., ectoparasitoid of Liriomyza trifolii. The mean length and width of egg were 0.5mm and 0.1mm. The mean length of larva, pupae, abult female, and abult male were 1.9mm, 2.0mm, 2.2mm, and 1.8mm, respectively. Developmental periods of Hemiptarsenus sp. from egg to larva at 15, 20, 25, $30^{\circ}C$ were 16.9, 8.8, 5.9, and 4.5 days, and those of pupa were 20.7, 9.7, 5.6, and 3.4 days, respectively. Based on these results, developmental threshold temperatures and effective temperatures were $9.5^{\circ}C$, 91.5 degree-days in egg-larval stage, $10.9^{\circ}C$, 142.3 degree-days in pupal stage. When several insecticides were evaluated to Hemiptarsenus sp. at the recommended concentrations, B.t WP, diflubenzuron WP, and cyromazin were negligiblly effective all life stages. Fipronil SC, cartap SP, spinosad GW were less toxic to larva and pupa, but highly toxic to adults. Abamectin EC was less toxic to all life stages, but inhibited oviposition of 50% more to Hemiptarsenus sp. female.
