  • An experimental investigation of heat transfer characteristics at the surface of two-dimensional protruding heated blocks using confined impinging multiple slot jets has been performed. The effects of jet-to-jet distances(S=16B, 24B), dimensionless nozzle-to-block distances(H/B=2, 6) and jet Reynolds numbers(Re=2000, 3900, 5800, 7800) on the local and average heat transfer coefficients have been examined with five isothermally heated blocks at streamwise block spacing(p/w=1). To clarify local heat transfer characteristics, naphthalene sublimation technique was used. From the results, it was found that the local and average heat transfer of heated blocks increases with decreasing jet-to-jet distance and increasing jet Reynolds number. Measurements of local heat transfer coefficients have given an indication of the nature of the interaction between jets and of the uniformity of heat transfer obtainable with various arrangements. In the case of S/B=16, H/B=6 and Re=7800, maximum average Nusselt number of overall blocks was obtained.

  • The theoretical bases on characteristics of heat release rate in compartment of building for scenario of smoke management are introduced and the numerical applications to simple compartment model are carried out. The growth stage which is important for smoke management design is modelled as t-squared fire curve including fire growth coefficient with related to growth rate. The conditions for the happening of flashover is presented such as $600^{\circ}C$ of temperature or $20kW/m^2$ of radiation heat flux. After the flashover happen, the fire in compartment changes to fully developed fire having the characteristics of ventilation-controlled fire. As the result of numerical analysis to simple compartment model, the time to reach 900K under ceiling for condition of medium growth is twice for condition of fast growth.

  • On a large scale of data center, heat generation rates from sever computers occupy almost the entire cooling load of the building, and it is gradually increasing. The efficiency of air distribution system in data centers can be affected by heat generation rates of server computers. In this study, the distributions of airflow and temperature in a data center have been investigated by CFD simulations under various conditions of heat generation rates for server computers. From the results, air around the cold aisle which has high temperature flows tremendously into the cold aisle according to the increase of heat generation rates for server computers and the air temperature in the cold aisle becomes higher. The SHI (supply heat index) and RHI (return temperature index) show almost similar values to the cases study because the air inflow rates to server computers increase with the heat generation rates of server computers.

  • In this paper, we have evaluated the physical characteristicsof the Pt/Cr bilayer, fabricated the micro hot plate by using the Pt/Cr bilayer and E-beam evaporated oxide as a passivation layer, and simulated the thermal distribution by using the commercial software FIDAP. From the researches the sheet resistance of Pt/Cr bilayer didn't be affected by the Cr layer thickness. This results was considered due to the Cr-oxide resided at the interface between Pt and Cr layer. After manufacturing the hot plate, we measured its temperature by type k thermo-couple and I.R. thermo-vision system. In those experiments, the emission coefficient( ${\varepsilon}$ ) of the E-beam evaporated oxide was 0.5 and the temperature of centural region was reached about $305\;^{\circ}C$ at 1.3 watts. The temperature simulation obtained by FIDAP commercial package stewed that the temperature of centural region was about $311\;^{\circ}C$ after 5 sec.

  • An experimental investigation on heat transfer characteristics of two-dimensional heated blocks using a confined impinging slot jet has been performed. The effect of jet Reynolds number(Re=3900, 5800, 9700), streamwise block spacing(p/w=0.5, 1, 1.5) and dimensionless nozzle to block distance(H/B=1, 2, 4, 6) have been examined with five isothermally heated blocks. With the measurement of jet mean velocity and turbulence intensity distributions at nozzle exit, initially turbulent regimes, are classified. To clarify local heat transfer characteristics, naphthalene sublimation technique as used. The maximum Nusselt number at the stagnation point for the jet Reynolds number is occurred at H/B=4. Besides, the local and a average heat transfer of heated blocks increase with decreasing streamwise block spacing and increasing jet Reynolds number.

  • Natural convection heat transfer in an enclosure with an opening in the right veritcal wall and a heat source at the bottom surface is investigated using a holographic interferometric technique. The effects of the opening length, divider length attached to the top wall, and heater temperature on the temperature distribution are examined. The opening length as well as the divider length greatly affects the degree of inflow and outflow of air. In the case of small opening length, the opening doesnt affect much the upward warm air flow resulting in the symmetric temperature distribution .The upward flow in hindered by the divider resulting in the decrease of heat transfer from the heater region to the upper region. The longest divider shows the highest temperature in the lower region of enclosure. In the case of large opening length, the inward cold flow moves the upward flow to the left direction. Among the cases of different divider length, the case of H(sub)d=0.25H shows the highest temperature in the lower region of enclosure.

  • This paper deals with thermal characteristic analysis of induction motors for machine tool spindle for motion error prediction. Firstly, the inverse design of general induction motors for machine tool spindle has been performed by design principles. Characteristics considering VVVF inverter of induction motors were analyzed. Secondary, power loss and thermal characteristics of induction motors analyzed by equivalent thermal resistance model from Motor-CAD S/W. To develop a second-order fitted power-loss distribution model for the constant-torque operating range of the induction motor, we employed the design of experiment and response surface methodology techniques. Finally, the analysis results were experimentally verified, and the validity of the proposed analysis method was confirmed.

  • In this study, we have evaluated the hazardous factors of fires such as heat release rate, smoke density, ignition temperature, and flammability of carpet and curtain used in the public facilities. As a result of flame retardant treatment, the heat release rate of materials treated with flame retardant was lower than that of not treated. However, the smoke density of treated materials was higher than that of not treated. Also, we have investigated the fire characteristics of used and unused carpet. As a result, the heat release rate and the smoke density of used for 3 years carpet were higher than those of unused carpet. The distinct differences of flammability and ignition temperature between used and unused carpet were confirmed.

  • This paper describes electrical fire on electric pad using carbon type hot wires. A carbon type hot wires electric pad is virtually impossible to connect hot wire as a method of electrical welding or soldering. In order to connect between hot wires, that has to splice carbon type material connector. If junction of hot wires was occurrence of poor connection on electric pad, it increase contact resistance on this junction point. With increasing contact resistance, junction of hot wires on electric pad generates local heating and finally leads to electrical fire. In this paper, we analyzed shape of damage in hot wires caused by electrical local heating and investigated fire cause on electric pad using by carbon type hot wires.

  • The electrical and physical charateristics of aluminum oxide and Pt thin films on it, deposited by reactive sputtering and DC magnetron sputtering, respectively, were analysed with increasing annealing temperature(400~80$0^{\circ}C$) by four point probe, SEM and XRD. Under $600^{\circ}C$ of annealing temperature, aluminum oxide had the properties of improving Pt adhesion to SiO$_2$and insulation without chemical reaction to Pt thin films and the resistivity of Pt thin finns was improved. But these properties of aluminum oxide and Pt thin finns on it were degraded over $700^{\circ}C$ of annealing temperature because aluminum oxide was changed into metal aluminum and then reacted to Pt thin films deposited on it. The thermal characteristics of Pt micro heater were analysed with Pt-RTD integrated on the same substrate. In the analysis of properties of Pt micro heater. active area was smaller size, Pt micro heater had better thermal characteristics. Temperature of Pt micro heater fabricated on membrane was up to 34$0^{\circ}C$ with 1.2watts of the heating power due to reduction of the external thermal loss.
